Download or read book Silver Lake Drive written by Alex Prager and published by . This book was released on 2018-06 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alex Prager is one of the truly original image makers of our time. Working fluidly between photography and film, she creates large-scale projects that combine elaborately built sets, highly staged, complex performances and a 'Hollywood' aesthetic to produce still and moving images that are familiar yet strange, utterly compelling and unerringly memorable. In her career she has won both popular acclaim and the recognition of the art establishment - her work can be found in the collections of MoMA and the Whitney Museum in New York as well as institutions worldwide. This book is the first career retrospective of this rising star. In 120 carefully curated photographs, it summarizes Prager's creative trajectory and offers an ideal introduction for the popular 'breakout' audience who may have only recently encountered her work. Structured around her project-orientated approach, Silver Lake Drive presents the very best images from her career to date: from the early Film Stills through her collaborations with the actor Bryce Dallas Howard on Week-end and Despair to the tour de force of Face in the Crowd - shot on a Hollywood sound stage with over 150 performers - and her 2015 commission for the Paris opera La Grande Sortie. Supported by an international exhibition schedule, and including an in-depth interview with Alex Prager by Nathalie Herschdorfer and supplementary essays by the curators of renowned museums and galleries, this book will be an essential addition to the collection of anyone who has followed Prager's career and all with an interest in and appreciation of contemporary art.
Book Synopsis Transforming Nature by : Michael E. Gorman
Download or read book Transforming Nature written by Michael E. Gorman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is but the draft of a draft, as Melville said of Moby Dick. There is no prose here to match Melville's, but the scope is worthy of the great white whale. No one could possibly write a comprehensive, authoritative book on ethics, invention and discovery. I have not tried to, though I hope my bibliography will be a useful starting point for other explorers, and the cases and ideas presented here will keep people arguing for years. Although this book is nothing like a textbook, it is written for my students. I was trained as a teacher of psychology in graduate school and ended-up, by one of those happy chances of the job market, teaching psychology to engineering students rather than psyche majors. My dissertation and early research were in the psychology of scientific hypothesis-testing (see Chapter 2). When I team-taught a course with W. Bernard Carlson, a historian of technology, I saw how cognitive psychology might be applied to the study of invention. Bernie and I received funding from the National Science Foundation for three years of research on the invention of the telephone; a portion of that work is described in Chapter 3.
Book Synopsis Trials and Transformations: Memoir Ii by : James A. Chisman PhD
Download or read book Trials and Transformations: Memoir Ii written by James A. Chisman PhD and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-02-09 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This memoir is a domestic follow-up to my book Travels and Tribulations: A Memoir, which is a collection of short stories based on my adventures and observations from extensive foreign travel. This book is a collection of short stories about domestic adventures and observations in the process of growing up in the Midwest. Some people think my growing up has yet to happen. These stories are true, some with a few minor embellishments to improve the flow. Some names have been changed to protect the guilty. They are in chronological order but are not tied to a theme nor do they cover year-to-year happenings. They are memorable events that I think a reader might find interesting or humorous. These are the kinds of events that make life what it is.

Book Synopsis Transformations of Circe by : Judith Yarnall
Download or read book Transformations of Circe written by Judith Yarnall and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with a detailed study of Homer's balance of negative and positive elements in the Circe-Odysseus myth, Judith Yarnall employs text and illustrations to demonstrate how Homer's Circe is connected with age-old traditions of goddess worship. She then examines how the image of a one-sided "witch," who first appeared in the commentary of Homer's allegorical interpreters, proved remarkably persistent, influencing Virgil and Ovid. Yarnall concludes with a discussion of work by Margaret Atwood and Eudora Welty in which the enchantress at last speaks in her own voice: that of a woman isolated by, but unashamed of, her power.
Book Synopsis The Public Company Transformed by : Brian Cheffins
Download or read book The Public Company Transformed written by Brian Cheffins and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-28 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades, the public company has played a dominant role in the American economy. Since the middle of the 20th century, the nature of the public company has changed considerably. The transformation has been a fascinating one, marked by scandals, political controversy, wide swings in investor and public sentiment, mismanagement, entrepreneurial verve, noisy corporate "raiders" and various other larger-than-life personalities. Nevertheless, amidst a voluminous literature on corporations, a systematic historical analysis of the changes that have occurred is lacking. The Public Company Transformed correspondingly analyzes how the public company has been recast from the mid-20th century through to the present day, with particular emphasis on senior corporate executives and the constraints affecting the choices available to them. The chronological point of departure is the managerial capitalism era, which prevailed in large American corporations following World War II. The book explores managerial capitalism's rise, its 1950s and 1960s heyday, and its fall in the 1970s and 1980s. It describes the American public companies and executives that enjoyed prosperity during the 1990s, and the reversal of fortunes in the 2000s precipitated by corporate scandals and the financial crisis of 2008. The book also considers the regulation of public companies in detail, and discusses developments in shareholder activism, company boards, chief executives, and concerns about oligopoly. The volume concludes by offering conjectures on the future of the public corporation, and suggests that predictions of the demise of the public company have been exaggerated.
Book Synopsis Time Frequency Analysis of Some Generalized Fourier Transforms by : Mohammad Younus Bhat
Download or read book Time Frequency Analysis of Some Generalized Fourier Transforms written by Mohammad Younus Bhat and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2023-09-13 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the world of physical science, important physical quantities like sound, pressure, electrical current, voltage, and electromagnetic fields vary with time. Such quantities are labeled as signals/waveforms and include oral signals, optical signals, acoustic signals, biomedical signals, radar, and sonar. Time-frequency analysis is a vital aid in signal analysis, which is concerned with how the frequency of a function (or signal) behaves in time, and it has evolved into a widely recognized applied discipline of signal processing. This book discusses the Fourier transform (FT), which is one of the most valuable and widely used integral transforms that converts a signal from time versus amplitude to frequency versus amplitude. It is one of the oldest tools in the time-frequency analysis of signals. The book includes five chapters that discuss general Fourier transforms as well as new and novel transforms such as hybrid transforms, quadratic-phase Fourier transforms, fractional Fourier transforms, linear canonical transforms, and more.
