This book was released on 1997 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this review, we have examined the scientific literature related to the benefits and possible adverse effects of dental amalgam and of alternative restorative materials. The information available is inadequate to determine whether dental amalgam poses any significant risk to the health of the population (except for relatively rare cases of allergy or hypersensitivity to amalgam. If low-level mercury does have adverse effects, they are most likely subtle changes in central nervous system functioning, which might cause small deficits in short-term memory, for example. Other health effects are, given current evidence, very unlikely to result from amalgam fillings. Any potential benefit of removing intact amalgams and replacing them with other materials is very uncertain. Health Canada's recommendations to reduce the use of amalgam in the primary teeth of children, in pregnant women, and in individuals with kidney disease are consistent with the uncertain evidence regarding possible effects of dental amalgam.(Extract)

New Dental Amalgam chapter discusses the use of metal - still the most commonly used material in restorative and corrective dentistry. New Casting Alloys, Solders, and Wrought Metal Alloys chapter breaks down specific types of combination metals and the procedures in which they are used. New Dental Implants chapter covers several different types of implants as well as how to instruct patients on hygiene and home care of their implant(s). The Materials Handling section reflects the new Infection Control Environment (ICE) standards and all approved ADA methods for the disposal of surplus materials. A companion Evolve website includes exercises to help you identify images and master procedures, plus competency skill sheets to assess your understanding.

Book excerpt: This comprehensive text presents a detailed, heavily illustrated, step-by-step approach to restorative and preventive dentistry. It draws from both theory and practice, and is supported by extensive clinical and laboratory research. Based upon the principle that dental caries is a disease, not a lesion, the book provides both a thorough understanding of caries and an authoritative approach to its treatment and prevention. Now offering a companion Evolve website, this new edition has been updated to address the latest developments in an ever-changing field. Comprehensive coverage of operative dentistry includes fundamentals, diagnosis, instrumentation, preparation, restoration, and prevention, all within a single volume. Up-to-date information covers insurance, safety, and infection control, based on the latest reports and guidelines from organizations such as OSHA and ADA. A clear, consistent presentation describes each restorative process in a linear pattern: initial clinical procedures, tooth preparation, and then restorative technique. Procedural alternatives include multiple approaches to problems wherever applicable, teaching how to adapt a procedure or technique to answer individual patient needs. Pros and cons of restoration options include advantages, disadvantages, indications, and contraindications for restorations. A course-based presentation of topics follows that of many operative dentistry courses, making students' absorption of content stronger and more efficient. 2,550 illustrations include 700 high-quality half-tones and line drawings - more illustrations than any other operative dentistry text. Full-color clinical photos illustrate important concepts - such as coloration and shading on both natural teeth and prostheses. Computer assisted design and computer assisted machining (CAD/CAM) is incorporated into the practice of operative dentistry and related to techniques. Esthetic dentistry instruction is included for this increasingly popular area. Chapter outlines begin each chapter and highlight important topics. Extensive references direct readers to current resources available for additional research. A revised organization groups chapters into five sections, so that locating specific chapters or topics is easier and more efficient: 1. Fundamentals of Operative Dentistry 2. Instrumentation and Preparation 3. Composite Restorations 4. Amalgam Restorations 5. Metal Restorations Procedural Boxes offer step-by-step guides to important procedures, with each step accompanied by a corresponding image. A companion Evolve website features: Approximately 10 audio/video clips illustrating operative techniques and procedures A full-color image collection from the text Links to related content and additional information available on the Internet

The clinical thrust of the first edition is widened and strengthened to include coverage of the disease in all its variety, from eruption of the first primary tooth to the prevalent forms of the disease in older patients. The centrality of caries control and management to the dental health of all populations is further emphasized, as the book goes beyond the successful treatment of carious lesions to demonstrate the long-term consequences of the non-operative and therapeutic techniques employed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Use this quick guide to learn the essentials of dental materials! Dental Materials: A Pocket Guide describes how to recognize, select, and mix the most widely used materials in modern dentistry. A flip-book format covers each dental material in two pages, with the first page showing photos of the material before and after mixing, and the facing page including step-by-step mixing and use instructions. This compact, spiral-bound guide is ideal for on-the-go study or chairside reference. Flip-book style is ideal for quick identification and quizzing, devoting two pages to each dental material — one with photos, and the other featuring its description — so you can choose to view only the image, only the description, or both. Hundreds of high-quality photographs help you recognize, identify, and select dental materials, showing materials in three ways: 1) as they appear within manufacturer packaging, 2) as they appear in their unmixed forms, and 3) as they appear at the completion of mixing. Need-to-know information includes the form in which the dental material is supplied, its composition, the armamentarium for use, and step-by-step directions on how to mix and use the material. Helpful hints or special considerations highlight specific terms, issues, properties, or clinical uses of the materials. Convenient, easy-to-follow organization groups chapters into the main categories of materials including restorative materials, impression materials, dental waxes, bonding agents, whitening agents, and others. Compact, pocket size with spiral binding is ideal for chairside use or on-the-go study. Equipment Commonly Used to Manipulate Materials chapter sets up a foundation of essential knowledge by describing the equipment needed for work in dental materials. Historical Dental Materials chapter covers older materials that may still have a place within many dental offices. Quick-reference appendices make it easier to look up metric conversion tables along with photos of commonly used brand-name products for each type of material.
