Book excerpt: Ive often wondered, and Im sure others have too, what goes through a persons mind when trials and tribulations arise in their life. Im not just talking about the difficult times but the joyful ones too. We ask ourselves questions like, What makes a person stay in an abusive relationship when its so easy to walk away? Why do some people cry after receiving good news? Why is the homeless man smiling while living in a cardboard box? Why did the mother who just buried her murdered child forgive his murderer? These are just some of the questions we ponder. How blessed I am that I get to share some of those stories with you. Silent Thoughts is just that, the thoughts of a person who may be going through similar situations in their life. Since we dont know their journey, who are we to judge them? I think its best that we simply listen and learn as their situations teach us about life, and while were doing that, who knows, a few secrets may be revealed and save us a little pain or increase the joyful life were already living. Silent Thoughts is the book youve been waiting for to answer some of those questions. Its the missing piece to your puzzled mind, so let it fill in the blanks and exercise the beliefs you were unsure about. Im sure, when youre finished, a few of your questions will have been answered. So as always, sit back and relax, and let some of our stories do the talking for a while. Enjoy!

Book excerpt: From the author of the best selling poetry collection Love And Space Dust and the writer behind the internationally famous poetry account @storydj comes a book about love, heartbreak, life - and how to survive all three amongst the noise of our modern world. Loud World, Quiet Thoughts is divided into two parts. The first consists of short prose, aphorisms and quotes focused on the deafening noise of the modern world; of social media, of television, and pressure. It embodies the endless anxiety of contrasting voices and white noise so loud that it drowns out our own thoughts. The second consists of beautiful poetry drawn from our quietest thoughts and the depths of our souls, thoughts about love and heartbreak and, most of all, hope. Above all else, Loud World, Quiet Thoughts is a book about reconciling the secret spaces of your heart with the white noise of the world outside.

In the first book to fully examine obsessive bad thoughts, Dr. Lee Baer combines the latest research with his own extensive experience in treating this widespread syndrome. Drawing on information ranging from new advances in brain technology to pervasive social taboos, Dr. Baer explores the root causes of bad thoughts, why they can spiral out of control, and how to recognize the crucial difference between harmless and dangerous bad thoughts. An illuminating and accessible guide to the kinds of thoughts that create extreme fear, guilt, and worry, The Imp of the Mind provides concrete solutions to a tormenting and debilitating disorder. Including special sections on the prescription medications that have proven effective, it is "a beautifully written book that can be a great help to people who want to know what to do about obsessions" (Isaac Marks, M.D., author of Living with Fear: Understanding and Coping with Anxiety).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even a brief comparison with its canonical counterparts demonstrates that the Gospel of Luke is preoccupied with the power of spoken words; still, words alone do not make a language. Just as music without silence collapses into cacophony, so speech without silence signifies nothing: silences are the invisible, inaudible cement that hold the entire edifice together. Though scholars across diverse disciplines have analyzed silence in terms of its contexts, sources, and functions, these insights have barely begun to make inroads in biblical studies. Utilizing conceptual tools from narratology and reader-response criticism, this study is an initial exploration of largely uncharted territory – the various ways that narrative intersections of speech and silences function together rhetorically in Luke’s Gospel. Considering speech and silence to be mutually constituted in intricate and inextricable ways, Dinkler demonstrates that attention to both characters’ silences and the narrator’s silences helps to illuminate plot, characterization, theme, and readerly experience in Luke’s Gospel. Focusing on both speech and silence reveals that the Lukan narrator seeks to shape readers into ideal witnesses who use speech and silence in particular ways; Luke can be read as an early Christian proclamation – not only of the gospel message – but also of the proper ways to use speech and silence in light of that message. Thus, we find that speech and silence are significant matters of concern within the Lukan story and that speech and silence are significant tools used in its telling.

Book excerpt: Dear Reader, Within the pages of this literary voyage, I am the author, an architect of emotions, and a soul compelled to express the intricate dance of existence through the alchemy of language. At the core of my creative spirit resides an indelible connection, a princess whose influence has shaped every syllable etched onto these canvases of prose. This princess, the inspiration behind the verses that dance across these pages. Her love, an elixir that breathes life into my words, is the driving force behind the tales that unfold. With each stroke of my pen, I endeavor to capture the essence of her smile — a luminous beacon that transcends the mundane and lights the path to artistic revelation. Her eyes, profound pools of understanding, have become the wellspring of my inspiration, guiding me to explore the depths of human emotion. In the symphony of my self-expression, her name emerges as a refrain, a poetic chant that resonates within the heart of these verses. It is more than a mere combination of letters; it is the lyrical embodiment of the love, passion, and shared moments that fuel the narrative. Her name, a sacred mantra, infuses these words with a timeless quality, promising that our connection will endure beyond the confines of mere paper and ink. As readers immerse themselves in the cadence of this collection, they embark on a journey guided by her invisible hand. This book is a living testament to the profound impact she has had on my creative spirit — an intimate portrayal of the princess whose influence permeates each stanza. The verses unfold not just as a testament to her, but as a celebration of the enduring connection we share. This literary odyssey is an offering to the princess who sparked the flames of creativity within my soul, a poetic gesture that transcends the boundaries of time. She remains my soulmate, an ethereal presence that will echo through the ages, ensuring that our shared story is eternally inscribed in the annals of literary history.

Book excerpt: The first volume of poetry by Zakari Musa was published in 2004. The Silent Stream (Volume II) represents his more recent thoughts. His second volume includes his philosophy on man, nature, society and destiny/fate. If you read carefully, you too will envision the beautiful hills and valleys of his homeland. This stunning collection of poems is delivered with a masterful touch by the Nigerian poet. Zakari Musa is of the Igala tribe of Nigeria. He grew up in a village as a farmer, a fisherman, and a hunter, in a place where there were cultural entertainments, peaceful cohabitation with fellow human beings, justice and fair play, and the gifts of nature through farm work, fishing, and the harnessing of palm fruits and oil. He recalls the beautiful and serene terrain of the hills and valleys, as well as the beautiful music and the art of the language, the Igala language. "I was brought up by my aged parents whose stock in trade was honesty, with diligence and dexterity." He is currently a chief confidential secretary/public administrator of the Registry Department of the Federal Polytechnic, Idah, Kogi State, Nigeria. This poetry collection by Nigerian poet Zakari Musa represents an X-ray of man and his natural environment. Shown from his imaginative realm with the power of words, it interplays with faith to blend the twisting fist of fate, only to post his flag where he may be found until his last whistle is blown. These words are drawn from within the cycle of life, from cradle to the grave, when the theatrical curtain of life shall be drawn forever. He was motivated to write this book by his college teachers who were hardworking and skilled in the arts, the pioneer poets whose works constituted the fabric of his inspiration, and by God, "whose ceaseless inspiration has continued to flow with resounding and irresistible pressure."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sitting in stillness, the practice of meditation, and the cultivation of awareness are commonly thought to be the preserves of Hindus and Buddhists. Martin Laird shows that the Christian tradition of contemplation has its own refined teachings on using a prayer word to focus the mind, working with the breath to cultivate stillness, and the practice of inner vigilance or awareness. But this book is not a mere historical survey of these teachings. In Into the Silent Land, we see the ancient wisdom of both the Christian East and West brought sharply to bear on the modern-day longing for radical openness to God in the depths of the heart. Laird's book is not like the many presentations for beginners. While useful for those just starting out, this book serves especially as a guide for those who desire to journey yet deeper into the silence of God. The heart of the book focuses on negotiating key moments of struggle on the contemplative path, when the whirlwind of distractions or the brick wall of boredom makes it difficult to continue. Laird shows that these inner struggles, even wounds, that any person of prayer must face, are like riddles, trying to draw out of us our own inner silence. Ultimately Laird shows how the wounds we loathe become vehicles of the healing silence we seek, beyond technique and achievement. Throughout the language is fresh, direct, and focused on real-life examples of people whose lives are incomparably enriched by the practice of contemplation.
