Download or read book The Prophet written by Kahlil Gibran and published by David De Angelis. This book was released on 2019-01-25 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kahlil Gibran considered The Prophet his greatest achievement. He said: "I think I've never been without The Prophet since I first conceived it in Mount Lebanon. It seems to have been a part of me....I kept the manuscript four years before I delivered it over to my publisher, because I wanted to be sure, I wanted to be very sure, that every word of it was the very best I had to offer." The Chicago Post said of The Prophet: "Cadenced and vibrant with feeling, the words of Kahlil Gibran bring to one's ears the majestic rhythm of Ecclesiastes....If there is a man or woman who can read this book without a quiet acceptance of a great man's philosophy and a singing in the heart as of music born within, that man or woman is indeed dead to life and truth."
Download or read book A Lesser Love written by E. J. Koh and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Lesser Love is a book of love poems and elegies for those who have fumbled and stumbled and disappointed. These are poems of love and departure for romantic partners, family members, even countries and communities. Raised around diasporic Korean communities, E. J. Koh has descibred her work as deeply influenced by the idea of jeong, which can be translated as a deep attachment, bond, and reciprocity for places, people, and things. This spirit of jeong permeates this book of poems that are astonishing in the connections they draw and the ties they bind. In A Lesser Love readers will find poems composed of “Ingredients for Memories that Can Be Used as Explosives” and poems composed of chemistry equations that convert light into “reasonable dioxide” and then further transmogrify the formula into a complex understanding of the parent-child relationship. A book of intimate poems that invite readers into a private world, that geography grows wider and more interconnected with each passing page. Through the eyes of mothers, fathers, daughters, aunts, friends, and lovers, we see the tragedy of a sinking ferry, they hypocrisies of government agencies, the aftermath of war, and a very wide view through the Hubble space telescope. With evocative lyricism and profound emotional intensity Koh has crafted a book of poems that charm and delight and profoundly enrich.

Download or read book Continuing Bonds written by Dennis Klass and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1996. This new book gives voice to an emerging consensus among bereavement scholars that our understanding of the grief process needs to be expanded. The dominant 20th century model holds that the function of grief and mourning is to cut bonds with the deceased, thereby freeing the survivor to reinvest in new relationships in the present. Pathological grief has been defined in terms of holding on to the deceased. Close examination reveals that this model is based more on the cultural values of modernity than on any substantial data of what people actually do. Presenting data from several populations, 22 authors - among the most respected in their fields - demonstrate that the health resolution of grief enables one to maintain a continuing bond with the deceased. Despite cultural disapproval and lack of validation by professionals, survivors find places for the dead in their on-going lives and even in their communities. Such bonds are not denial: the deceased can provide resources for enriched functioning in the present. Chapters examine widows and widowers, bereaved children, parents and siblings, and a population previously excluded from bereavement research: adoptees and their birth parents. Bereavement in Japanese culture is also discussed, as are meanings and implications of this new model of grief. Opening new areas of research and scholarly dialogue, this work provides the basis for significant developments in clinical practice in the field.
Book Synopsis Creative Power of Silence by : Swami Paramananda
Download or read book Creative Power of Silence written by Swami Paramananda and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-01 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silence, the great unseen power, the miracle of life, works upon our character with strange contrast. Prior to spiritual studies, the idea of complete silence is strongly advocated by many. In practicing the silence, it is found to unfold our higher nature. The silence allows concentration. With the intrusion of noise, the mind cannot be receptive. Contrary to some belief, the silence is not to free the mind to allow emptiness. It means co-ordination of body and mind. It reduces friction and becomes a definite factor for our concentrated thought. The silence is essential for all forms of study. “A silent being is a very restful being. All wise people realize the deeper part of our nature can only be expressed effectively when our outer being is still.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the heart of Vacari, where shadows once wove a sinister ballet, the realm embarks on a subtle metamorphosis. Amidst the ruins of once-majestic cities and ancient forests, Keisha, Ong, and Pumpkin navigate the remnants of a bygone era, where Vacari transforms. Nature's power permeates the land, transforming despair into beauty as solitary flowers push through grief-stricken stone. Vacari's rivers flow with renewed clarity, singing a lullaby of redemption. In the sacred realm of E'vahona, Keisha and her companions unite with ancient powers, forging an ethereal alliance between elemental forces and the spirits who once sought solace in Vacari's sanctuary. As dawn's first rays kiss the horizon, a soft melody of rebirth echoes through Vacari. Keisha embarks on a journey of healing, her scars mirroring the realm's wounds. The trio stands on the precipice of resurgence, inhaling deeply as Vacari promises a new day. Will they uncover the secrets needed to restore Vacari to its former glory, or will darkness threaten to reclaim the realm again?" This is the final installment of the Elves of Vacari Trilogy.
Book Synopsis Narrating Motherhood(s), Breaking the Silence by : Silvia Caporale-Bizzini
Download or read book Narrating Motherhood(s), Breaking the Silence written by Silvia Caporale-Bizzini and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2006 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feminist theory on motherhood has successfully transformed mothers into subjects of their own discourse, recognized the historical, heterogeneous and socially constructed origins of their life experience while, at the same time, widening our understanding of the notion of mothering. This collection combines a literary and a wider cultural perspective from which to look at the topic of the representation of other or forgotten motherhoods. Mothers who have been forced to live exiled and away from their children, women who after trying to conceive, get pregnant but discover they cannot bear to become mothers, or even literary characters based on an autobiographical experience of a sexually abusive mother. The essays critically point out how writing becomes a tool to think and write about the many aspects of motherhood such as an idealized maternal experience versus the real one or the accepted stereotypes of the good mother and the bad mother.

Book excerpt: In this memoir, Walter Ziffer, a Holocaust survivor born in Czechoslovakia in 1927, recounts his boyhood experiences, the Polish and later German invasions of his hometown, the destruction of his synagogue, his Jewish community’s forced move into a ghetto, and his 1942 deportation and ensuing experiences in eight Nazi concentration and slave labor camps. In 1945, Ziffer returned to his hometown, trained as a mechanic and later emigrated to the US where he converted to Christianity, married, graduated from Vanderbilt University with an engineering degree, worked for General Motors before becoming a Christian minister. He taught and preached in Ohio, France, Washington DC and Belgium. He later returned to Judaism and considers himself a Jewish secular humanist. “The compelling story of an unfolding life carried by an insatiable search for meaning.” — Mahan Siler, retired Baptist minister “In Walter Ziffer’s beautifully written new book, you will learn of Walter’s complex life journey, and you may experience, thanks to his skillfully told story and clearly articulated questions and insights, a sense of his presence, the presence of a great man who finds in his own story lessons important for the rest of us, especially now.” —Richard Chess, Director, The Center for Jewish Studies at UNC Asheville “A powerful and unique addition to the literature of the Holocaust. Walter Ziffer’s memoir not only recounts his own personal resilience and survival of the camps, but also his own unusual spiritual journey in which he both becomes a Christian minister while retaining his quintessential Jewish identity. This is a learned, well-crafted, and fascinating new dimension to this literature.” — Michael Sartisky, President Emeritus, Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities “The Holocaust portion [of this memoir]... is as true and chilling as a parent’s last words. His tale-telling prowess makes as strong a mental impression as it makes a factual one.” — Rob Neufeld, Asheville Citizen-Times
