Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For fifty years, Hydrosilylation has been one of the most fundamental and elegant methods for the laboratory and industrial synthesis of organosilicon and silicon related compounds. Despite the intensive research and continued interest generated by organosilicon compounds, no comprehensive book incorporating its various aspects has been published this century. The aim of this book is to comprehensively review the advances of hydrosilylation processes since 1990. The survey of the literature published over the last two decades enables the authors to discuss the most recent aspects of hydrosilylation advances (catalytic and synthetic) and to elucidate the reaction mechanism for the given catalyst used and the reaction utilization. New catalytic pathways under optimum conditions necessary for efficient synthesis of organosilicon compounds are presented. This monograph shows the extensive development in the application of hydrosilylation in organic and asymmetric syntheses and in polymer and material science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What’s it really like to be a chemist? Leading chemists share what they do, how they do it, and why they love it. “Letters to a young ...” has been a much-loved way for professionals in a field to convey their enthusiasm and the realities of what they do to the next generation. Now, Letters to a Young Chemist does the same for the chemical sciences. Written with a humorous touch by some of today’s leading chemists, this book presents missives to “Angela,” a fictional undergraduate considering a career in chemistry. The different chapters offer a mix of fundamental principles, contemporary issues, and challenges for the future. Marye Anne Fox, Chancellor of the University of California San Diego, talks about learning to do research and modern physical organic chemistry. Brothers Jonathan and Daniel Sessler explain the chemistry of anesthetics that make modern surgery possible while Elizabeth Nolan talks about biological imaging. Terry Collins talks about green chemistry, a more sustainable way of doing chemistry, while several authors including Carl Wamser, Harry Gray, John Magyar, and Penny Brothers discuss the crucial contributions that chemists can make in meeting global energy needs. Letters to a Young Chemist gives students and professionals alike a unique window into the real world of chemistry. Entertaining, informative, and full of honest and inspiring advice, it serves as a helpful guide throughout your education and career. “The different chapters describe both the wonders of the molecular world and the practical benefits afforded by chemistry ... and if any girl out there thinks that chemistry is a man’s world, this book should be a good antidote.” —Marye Anne Fox, Chancellor of the University of California, San Diego, and winner of the 2009 US National Medal of Science “Letters to a Young Chemist offers significant ammunition for motivating young people to consider chemistry as a career. ... This book should also be required reading for all faculty members who teach chemistry in high schools, colleges, and universities.” —Stephen J. Lippard, Arthur Amos Noyes Professor of Chemistry, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and winner of the 2006 US National Medal of Science

Book excerpt: The rate of advance in areas of science is seldom constant. Usually certain fields effloresce with activity because of the ~ealization that solutions are possible to long standing important problems. So it is now with asymmetric catalysis, a field which promises to change profoundly the strategic thinking of synthetic chemists. As this Report will show, reagents which can induce catalytic enantiocontrol of chemical transformations could represent the ultimate synthetic method. Nearly all synthetic strategies of complex molecules involve steps which require enantiocontrol and, in many cases, a specific catalytic transformation embodying enan tiocontrol has enormous advantages in terms of the rate and economy of the reaction. Because asymmetric catalysis is in a formative stage, workers with different backgrounds have joined the field. This Workshop had representatives with organometallic, organic, structural, kinetic, enzymatic, microbiological and industrial backgrounds. Each had his own perspective and this Report represents a consensus of this group of eleven people. The result is probably as compre hensive and balanced a view of the subject as is possible at present. It is hoped that those who have until now had but a glancing interest in asymmetric catalysis will find this Report a useful indication of its present state. We believe that asymmetric catalysis will have an increasing impact on the development of chemistry and will eventually dominate much of synthetic and industrial chemistry.

Book excerpt: This introductory textbook covers all aspects of catalysis. It also bridges computational methods, industrial applications and green chemistry, with over 600 references. The book is aimed at chemistry and chemical engineering students, and is suitable for both senior undergraduate- and graduate-level courses, with many examples and hands-on exercises. The author, a renowned researcher in catalysis, is well known for his clear teaching and writing style (he was voted "lecturer of the year" by the chemistry students). Following an introduction to green chemistry and the basics of catalysis, the book covers the principles and applications of homogeneous catalysis, heterogeneous catalysis and biocatalysis. Each chapter includes up-to-date industrial examples, that demonstrate how catalysis helps our society reach the goals of sustainable development. Since its publication in 2008, Catalysis: Concepts and Green Applications has become the most popular textbook in catalysis. This second edition is updated with the latest developments in catalysis research in academia and industry. It also contains 50 additional exercises, based on the suggestions of students and teachers of chemistry and chemical engineering from all over the world. The book is also available in the Chinese language (https://detail.tmall.com/item.htm?spm=a212k0.12153887.0.0.4e60687dUTEDKm&id=619581126247).
