Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers selected after a very careful refereeing process for presentation during the Workshop on Job Scheduling Stategies for Parallel Processing, held in Santa Barbara, California, as a prelude to the IPPS '95 conference in April 1995. The 19 full papers presented demonstrate that parallel job scheduling takes on a crucial role as multi-user parallel supercomputers become more widespread. All aspects of job scheduling for parallel systems are covered, from the perspectives of academic research, industrial design of parallel systems, as well as user needs. Of particular interest, also for nonexpert readers, is the introductory paper "Parallel Job Scheduling: Issues and Approaches" by the volume editors.

Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of network behavior analysis that mines Internet traffic data in order to extract, model, and make sense of behavioral patterns in Internet “objects” such as end hosts, smartphones, Internet of things, and applications. The objective of this book is to fill the book publication gap in network behavior analysis, which has recently become an increasingly important component of comprehensive network security solutions for data center networks, backbone networks, enterprise networks, and edge networks. The book presents fundamental principles and best practices for measuring, extracting, modeling and analyzing network behavior for end hosts and applications on the basis of Internet traffic data. In addition, it explains the concept and key elements (e.g., what, who, where, when, and why) of communication patterns and network behavior of end hosts and network applications, drawing on data mining, machine learning, information theory, probabilistic graphical and structural modeling to do so. The book also discusses the benefits of network behavior analysis for applications in cybersecurity monitoring, Internet traffic profiling, anomaly traffic detection, and emerging application detections. The book will be of particular interest to researchers and practitioners in the fields of Internet measurement, traffic analysis, and cybersecurity, since it provides a spectrum of innovative techniques for summarizing behavior models, structural models, and graphic models of Internet traffic, and explains how to leverage the results for a broad range of real-world applications in network management, security operations, and cyber-intelligent analysis. After finishing this book, readers will 1) have learned the principles and practices of measuring, modeling, and analyzing network behavior on the basis of massive Internet traffic data; 2) be able to make sense of network behavior for a spectrum of applications ranging from cybersecurity and network monitoring to emerging application detection; and 3) understand how to explore network behavior analysis to complement traditional perimeter-based firewall and intrusion detection systems in order to detect unusual traffic patterns or zero-day security threats using data mining and machine learning techniques. To ideally benefit from this book, readers should have a basic grasp of TCP/IP protocols, data packets, network flows, and Internet applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book summarizes the landscape of cache replacement policies for CPU data caches. The emphasis is on algorithmic issues, so the authors start by defining a taxonomy that places previous policies into two broad categories, which they refer to as coarse-grained and fine-grained policies. Each of these categories is then divided into three subcategories that describe different approaches to solving the cache replacement problem, along with summaries of significant work in each category. Richer factors, including solutions that optimize for metrics beyond cache miss rates, that are tailored to multi-core settings, that consider interactions with prefetchers, and that consider new memory technologies, are then explored. The book concludes by discussing trends and challenges for future work. This book, which assumes that readers will have a basic understanding of computer architecture and caches, will be useful to academics and practitioners across the field.

The 2001 WCW meeting was held on the Boston University Campus. Building on the successes of the five previous WCW meetings, WCW01 featured a strong technical program and record participation from leading researchers and practitioners in the field. This book consists of all the technical papers presented at WCW'01. It includes 20 full papers and four R&D synopses that were presented at the workshop. The collection reflects the latest research in this important area, including such topics as Content Delivery Networks (CDNs), tools and methodology of performance measurements, Web characterization as relates to caching and content distribution, scalable web server architectures, cache prefetching, emerging new edge services, and delivery of streaming content.

Book excerpt: This book covers two main topics: First, novel fast and flexible simulation techniques for modern heterogeneous NoC-based multi-core architectures. These are implemented in the full-system simulator called InvadeSIM and designed to study the dynamic behavior of hundreds of parallel application programs running on such architectures while competing for resources. Second, a novel actor-oriented programming library called ActorX10, which allows to formally model parallel streaming applications by actor graphs and to analyze predictable execution behavior as part of so-called hybrid mapping approaches, which are used to guarantee real-time requirements of such applications at design time independent from dynamic workloads by a combination of static analysis and dynamic embedding.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Storage Systems: Organization, Performance, Coding, Reliability and Their Data Processing was motivated by the 1988 Redundant Array of Inexpensive/Independent Disks proposal to replace large form factor mainframe disks with an array of commodity disks. Disk loads are balanced by striping data into strips—with one strip per disk— and storage reliability is enhanced via replication or erasure coding, which at best dedicates k strips per stripe to tolerate k disk failures. Flash memories have resulted in a paradigm shift with Solid State Drives (SSDs) replacing Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) for high performance applications. RAID and Flash have resulted in the emergence of new storage companies, namely EMC, NetApp, SanDisk, and Purestorage, and a multibillion-dollar storage market. Key new conferences and publications are reviewed in this book. The goal of the book is to expose students, researchers, and IT professionals to the more important developments in storage systems, while covering the evolution of storage technologies, traditional and novel databases, and novel sources of data. We describe several prototypes: FAWN at CMU, RAMCloud at Stanford, and Lightstore at MIT; Oracle's Exadata, AWS' Aurora, Alibaba's PolarDB, Fungible Data Center; and author's paper designs for cloud storage, namely heterogeneous disk arrays and hierarchical RAID. - Surveys storage technologies and lists sources of data: measurements, text, audio, images, and video - Familiarizes with paradigms to improve performance: caching, prefetching, log-structured file systems, and merge-trees (LSMs) - Describes RAID organizations and analyzes their performance and reliability - Conserves storage via data compression, deduplication, compaction, and secures data via encryption - Specifies implications of storage technologies on performance and power consumption - Exemplifies database parallelism for big data, analytics, deep learning via multicore CPUs, GPUs, FPGAs, and ASICs, e.g., Google's Tensor Processing Units

Book excerpt: This handbook offers a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art research achievements in the field of data centers. Contributions from international, leading researchers and scholars offer topics in cloud computing, virtualization in data centers, energy efficient data centers, and next generation data center architecture. It also comprises current research trends in emerging areas, such as data security, data protection management, and network resource management in data centers. Specific attention is devoted to industry needs associated with the challenges faced by data centers, such as various power, cooling, floor space, and associated environmental health and safety issues, while still working to support growth without disrupting quality of service. The contributions cut across various IT data technology domains as a single source to discuss the interdependencies that need to be supported to enable a virtualized, next-generation, energy efficient, economical, and environmentally friendly data center. This book appeals to a broad spectrum of readers, including server, storage, networking, database, and applications analysts, administrators, and architects. It is intended for those seeking to gain a stronger grasp on data center networks: the fundamental protocol used by the applications and the network, the typical network technologies, and their design aspects. The Handbook of Data Centers is a leading reference on design and implementation for planning, implementing, and operating data center networks.
