Download or read book Sigmar Polke, Alchimist written by Sigmar Polke and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This modest catalogue provides an excellent introduction to and survey of the paintings of Sigmar Polke, one of the most significant artists of the last 50 years. Since the 1960s, Polke has been making paintings of a deeply ironic nature, works that make fun of the tropes that have dominated the world of modern art. As such, he has situated himself as something of a participant-critic in the dialogue concerning the relevance of painting in recent decades, and has made one of the strongest cases imaginable for its continuing relevance. With 50 color reproductions of important works from all periods of his career, as well as texts by the curators of both the Louisiana Museum in Denmark and the Astrup Fearnley Museum in Oslo, Norway, Sigmar Polke: Alchemist is a welcome addition to the Polke literature.

Download or read book Dissidence written by Marie Leduc and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2018-11-20 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the valorization of artistic and political dissidence has contributed to the rise of Chinese contemporary art in the West. Interest in Chinese contemporary art increased dramatically in the West shortly after the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests. Sparked by political sympathy and the mediatized response to the event, Western curators, critics, and art historians were quick to view the new art as an expression of dissident resistance to the Chinese regime. In this book, Marie Leduc proposes that this attribution of political dissidence is not only the result of latent Cold War perceptions about China, but also indicative of the art world's demand for artistically and politically provocative work—a demand that mirrors the valorization of free expression in liberal democracies. Focusing on nine Chinese artists—Wang Du, Wang Keping, Huang Yong Ping, Yang Jiechang, Chen Zhen, Yan Pei-Ming, Shen Yuan, Ru Xiaofan, and Du Zhenjun—who migrated to Paris in and around 1989, Leduc explores how their work was recognized before and after the Tiananmen Square incident. Drawing on personal interviews with the artists and curators, and through an analysis of important exhibitions, events, reviews, and curatorial texts, she demonstrates how these and other Chinese artists have been celebrated both for their artistic dissidence—their formal innovations and introduction of new media and concepts—and for their political dissidence—how their work challenges political values in both China and the West. As Leduc concludes, the rise of Chinese contemporary art in the West highlights the significance of artistic and political dissidence in the production of contemporary art, and the often-unrecognized relationship between contemporary art and liberal democracy.

Book Synopsis Alchemy in Contemporary Art by : Urszula Szulakowska
Download or read book Alchemy in Contemporary Art written by Urszula Szulakowska and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alchemy in Contemporary Art analyzes the manner in which twentieth-century artists, beginning with French Surrealists of the 1920s, have appropriated concepts and imagery from the western alchemical tradition. This study examines artistic production from c. 1920 to the present, with an emphasis on the 1970s to 2000, discussing familiar names such as Andre Breton, Salvador Dali, Yves Klein, Joseph Beuys, and Anselm Kiefer, as well as many little known artists of the later twentieth century. It provides a critical overview of the alchemical tradition in twentieth-century art, and of the use of occultist imagery as a code for political discourse and polemical engagement. The study is the first to examine the influence of alchemy and the Surrealist tradition on Australian as well as on Eastern European and Mexican art. In addition, the text considers the manner in which women artists such as Leonora Carrington, Remedios Varo, and Rebecca Horn have critically revised the traditional sexist imagery of alchemy and occultism for their own feminist purposes.

Book excerpt: Four artists from Germany, known globally, who have each attained a level of fame that is unique in the history of German art. Their renown was cemented by their early work of the 1960s--that decade of reaction and rebellion, of confrontation and upheaval, of utopias and a new social compass. In conversations with Gotz Adriani, the artists talk frankly about their work during this time when German society, East and West, may have got over the Nazi regime and the worst of the devastation of the war, but not the cultural and intellectual roots of Germany's fascist past. The book offers a fresh and comprehensive look at the early works of Baselitz, Richter, Polke, and Kiefer, at how each one variously tackled the aesthetic dominance of abstract art and the unique social and political environment of their newly founded country, the Federal Republic of Germany.
Book Synopsis Art beyond Borders by : Jerome Bazin
Download or read book Art beyond Borders written by Jerome Bazin and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 531 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents and analyzes artistic interactions both within the Soviet bloc and with the West between 1945 and 1989. During the Cold War the exchange of artistic ideas and products united Europe?s avant-garde in a most remarkable way. Despite the Iron Curtain and national and political borders there existed a constant flow of artists, artworks, artistic ideas and practices. The geographic borders of these exchanges have yet to be clearly defined. How were networks, centers, peripheries (local, national and international), scales, and distances constructed? How did (neo)avant-garde tendencies relate with officially sanctioned socialist realism? The literature on the art of Eastern Europe provides a great deal of factual knowledge about a vast cultural space, but mostly through the prism of stereotypes and national preoccupations. By discussing artworks, studying the writings on art, observing artistic evolution and artists? strategies, as well as the influence of political authorities, art dealers and art critics, the essays in Art beyond Borders compose a transnational history of arts in the Soviet satellite countries in the post war period. ÿ
Book Synopsis Conceptual Odysseys by : Griselda Pollock

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 'theoretical turn' within the arts and humanities in the 1970s and 1980s has, for many, had its day, with work produced under its rubric all too often feeling tired or even downright lazy. In its place - whilst hazarding against an outright rejection of theory - this book, introduced by Mieke Bal, presents work by a new generation of scholars responding directly to Bal's idea of the 'travelling concept'. By taking a concept from one discipline and, with a genuine understanding of its origin, thoughtfully applying this in a new context, exciting new possibilities are opened up for analysis of artworks and other cultural objects. Here we find these 'travelling concepts' employed in fresh explorations of subjects as diverse as the paintings of Poussin and of Adam Elsheimer; Chantal Akerman's film; the Museum of the French Revolution and the work of German Jewish painter Charlotte Salomon. This is a uniquely illuminating contribution to the edgy territorial conflicts between visual culture, art history and cultural studies.

Book Synopsis German Art from Beckmann to Richter by : Eckhart Gillen
Download or read book German Art from Beckmann to Richter written by Eckhart Gillen and published by Dumont. This book was released on 1997 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dramatic fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 brought the division of Germany to an end. This book -- a survey of German art between 1945 and 1990 -- compares how art mirrored the different political circumstances in the two German states during this period. It reveals for the first time how artists from East and West Germany responded to the Nazi dictatorship, the Holocaust and the world war, and various political developments, showing that the dividing line between East and West was much less strict than has been imagined. Authorities on German art discuss major works by such artists as Max Beckmann, Max Ernst, Otto Dix, Josef Albers, Georg Baselitz, Eva Hesse, Gerhard Richter, Josef Beuys, Anselm Kiefer, Hanne Darboven, and others. The book also includes biographies of the artists. This handsome book is the catalogue for the exhibition "Deutschlandbilder" to be held at the 47 Berliner Festwochen from September 1997 until January 1998.
