The basic character of fraternity, as we shall presently call in example to attest, is one of the noblest endowments of man by his Creator. Fraternity chapter houses can, and frequently do, exist in circumstances of the purest, most stimulating and inspiring nobility; but only where all of the inﬂuences of the campus and college are beneficial, which, provided proper effort is exerted by the colleges, they generally can be. A campus inﬂuence would 'be severely harmful, for example, which permitted but one fraternity chapter, limited to sixty mem bers, to exist where there was an enrollment of a thousand men. A campus inﬂuence would be harmful which permitted the matriculation in quan tity of incompetent scholars. A campus inﬂuence would be harmful which omitted protection or guidance for a fraternity chapter in the face of big-city temptations, distractions, and pitfalls. Indeed, a campus inﬂuence will be harm ful wherever the college does not have the proper ideals, standards, goals, leadership. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sigma Phi Epsilon Journal, Vol. 13: May 1, 1916 On December 6, 1905, there was organized at the University of Minnesota, the Bishop Gilbert Society, having as its object the promotion of the spiritual and social life of the Episcopal church men at the University. Monthly meetings of a social nature were held at the homes of the members. In the spring of 1909 a corporation of prominent clergy and laymen of the Episcopal church was organized under the name of The University House, incorporated under the laws of the State of Minnesota, for the purpose of acquiring property to be used as a center for the activities of the society. It purchased and now owns property near the campus, in which twelve men took up their residence in the fall of 1909. In the school year of 1911-12 realizing the inadequacy of the society's organization, the members took steps to perfect an organization of greater stability and purpose, taking the name of Chi Rho Theta Fraternity. At that time it was planned to form a national fraternity with membership restricted quite largely to the Episcopal Church. After due consideration this policy was found to be too narrow and given up as impractical. The fraternity prospered as a local, choosing for its members men in college activities regardless of church affiliation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sigma Phi Epsilon Journal, Vol. 16: December, 1918 This is a very foolish notion, because, if post-collegiate life is to be anticipated as a thing so grave, then there is every reason why one should seek an occasional respite in the renewal of old ties. Certainly no possible harm could result from such a step, and we venture to say that a great deal of genuine good might be derived, if only to lift one temporarily out of the depressing effects of the daily routine. But in this we have advanced an argument, something we dislike very much. Now we are going to assert a truth, when we state that the excuses made by the average alumnus for his' absence from Chapter activities are due more, to a spirit of self-indulgence than to the pressure of other interests. We are loath to believe that any man eats three meals a day from the top of his desk and uses a ledger to prop his head at night.
