Book excerpt: Over the years, the High Sierra has attracted a diverse group of travelers and residents who have explored its rivers, valleys, mountain peaks, lakes and passes. These names are clues to the colorful and unusual aspects of the area's past, and the people and events that shaped it.In 1926, the Sierra historian Francis Farquhar wrote Place Names of the High Sierra. Published by the Sierra Club, it quickly became a standard reference book. Since then, more than half the names on the present topographic maps of the Sierra have been created, but Farquhar died before he was able to complete his planned revision.Peter Browning, who was given access to Farquhar's extensive revision notes, has written an entirely new book on the place names of the Sierra Nevada. He has perused many original sources, including the place-names files of national parks and forests, the decision lists of the U.S. Board on Geographic Names, and field notes of the U.S. Geological Survey topographers responsible for naming many of the features. This new book gives the derivation and lore associated with each name as well as quotes from many of the explorers and travelers of the Sierra Nevada. This book also has a very practical value. It gives the topographic map on which to find each of the almost 3000 place names. Altitudes of peaks, passes and lakes are given and each place is located by national park national forest, etc.

Every write-up not only contains fun facts but also conveys a sense of the complex connections and interactions that sustain life in a unique place. Previously published as Magpies and Mayflies (Heyday, 2005), The Naturalist’s Illustrated Guide to the Sierra Foothills and Central Valley features updated scientific and common names, and a full redesign.

In this book are the place names of the Sierra Nevada from the Lake Tahoe basin south to Walker Pass. Not included are place names within Yosemite National Park, with the exception of the names for the features on the park's boundary with the adjacent national forest. All other Yosemite names are in the book Yosemite Place Names. The origin of the names within the Lake Tahoe Basin are in the book Tahoe Place Names. Both those books are also published by Great West Books. Altitudes of most peaks and lakes are given, and the name of the topographical map and the feature's location on that map are also provided. The names of the current 7.5' maps are referenced to their positions on the former 15' map series. There is an extensive bibliography. New in this edition are two indexes: one is of those who named features, and the other of those whose names appear in the text of various entries

Book excerpt: Annotation. "The Sierra Nevada of California and Nevada is the longest continuous mountain range in the United States. It contains over 50 percent of California's total flora, approximately 405 plant taxa endemic to the Sierra, and 218 taxa that are considered rare. Wild Plants of the Sierra Nevada offers a comprehensive inventory of the flora of the entire range, including descriptions of the plants; their traditional and contemporary uses as food, medicine, or for making tools and other products; and information about their habitat. In addition, the authors provide an introduction that describes the natural history and ecology of the Sierra Nevada in terms of plant communities and life zones, addressing the impact of such variables as climate, elevation, soil, and precipitation. They also outline the basic principles of ethnobotany, the role of plants in human nutrition and medicine, the classification of plants, and methods of collecting plant specimens and protecting rare species. The plant descriptions are accompanied by line drawings of each major species, and there are a number of "quick keys" to help readers differentiate between similar species." "Wild Plants of the Sierra Nevada is an essential reference guide for botanists, hikers, outdoors aficionados, and readers interested in the traditional uses of native plants. It is the first complete summary of the flora of one of the richest and most diverse botanical regions of North America."--Jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “sublime” and “radically original” exploration of the Sierra Nevadas, the best mountains on Earth for hiking and camping, from New York Times bestselling novelist Kim Stanley Robinson (Bill McKibben, Gary Snyder). Kim Stanley Robinson first ventured into the Sierra Nevada mountains during the summer of 1973. He returned from that encounter a changed man, awed by a landscape that made him feel as if he were simultaneously strolling through an art museum and scrambling on a jungle gym like an energized child. He has returned to the mountains throughout his life—more than a hundred trips—and has gathered a vast store of knowledge about them. The High Sierra is his lavish celebration of this exceptional place and an exploration of what makes this span of mountains one of the most compelling places on Earth. Over the course of a vivid and dramatic narrative, Robinson describes the geological forces that shaped the Sierras and the history of its exploration, going back to the indigenous peoples who made it home and whose traces can still be found today. He celebrates the people whose ideas and actions protected the High Sierra for future generations. He describes uniquely beautiful hikes and the trails to be avoided. Robinson’s own life-altering events, defining relationships, and unforgettable adventures form the narrative’s spine. And he illuminates the human communion with the wild and with the sublime, including the personal growth that only seems to come from time spent outdoors. The High Sierra is a gorgeous, absorbing immersion in a place, born out of a desire to understand and share one of the greatest rapture-inducing experiences our planet offers. Packed with maps, gear advice, more than 100 breathtaking photos, and much more, it will inspire veteran hikers, casual walkers, and travel readers to prepare for a magnificent adventure.
