This book was released on 1778 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Requests Whipple's opinion on the best course of action regarding the siege of Newport now that The Count De Estaing...abandoned us in the present Enterprise and opened the Harbour for...Reinforcements. Believes the British have only 6,000 men, while the American forces number 8,174. Rank & File exclusive of 628...Artillery Men. Asks Whipple whether he thinks it best to continue the siege without French naval support and risk the British reinforcing their position by sea, or to attack immediately with what seems a superior force, or to withdraw at once. Desires that Whipple's reply explain the reason for his choice and how best to carry it out. General Sullivan posed this question to a number of officers. GLC03232 is a reply by John Crane to a letter of Sullivan's that must have been almost identical to this one. The French and Americans had planed to mount a joint assault on the British at Newport. When many of the French ships were damaged in a storm their commander Vice Admiral d'Estaing was forced to move his fleet to Boston for repairs, taking his 4,000 French troops with him. Sullivan was furious at d'Estaing, and was forced to quickly abandon the siege.

This book was released on 1778 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expresses surprise at the news that Count D'Estaing has abandoned us in the present Enterprise. At Sullivan's request gives his opinion on the situation, saying he feels the siege of Newport is not worth continuing without the French fleet, since he expects British reinforcements soon. Instead suggests an immediate attack, for which he details his strategy. Opposes a retreat but in case the General Council be of a different opinion he lays out a plan for retreat as well. General Sullivan posed this question to a number of officers. In GLC04845 he writes William Whipple and asks his opinion on whether the Americans should continue the siege, attack immediately, or retreat. Also asks Whipple to explain his answer, as Crane has. The French and Americans had planed to mount a joint assault on the British at Newport. When many of the French ships were damaged in a storm their commanded Vice Admiral d'Estaing was forced to move his fleet to Boston for repairs, taking his 4,000 French troops with him. Sullivan was furious at d'Estaing, and was forced to quickly abandon the siege against his desires.

The intrepid dissenters of Rhode Island Colony saw their community flourish with the founding of Portsmouth and Newport townships. The Battle of Rhode Island was the only clash between American colonials and the British on Rhode Island soil during the Revolutionary War. From the mercantile success of the Atlantic triangle trade routes to the establishment of the United States Navy, noted historian Richard V. Simpson brings these and other stories from the Ocean State to life. Join Simpson as he explores the landmarks and architecture of the period to discover the remnants of Rhode Island's colonial past.

Book Synopsis The War for American Independence by : Mark Edward Lender
Download or read book The War for American Independence written by Mark Edward Lender and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2016-08-22 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An indispensable resource for investigating America's War for Independence, this book provides a comprehensive yet concise narrative that combines the author's original perspectives with the latest scholarship on the subject. Without the War for Independence and its successful outcome for the patriots, the course of American development—our institutions, culture, politics, and economics—would have run in radically different directions. From any perspective, the War for Independence was one of the seminal events of national history. This book offers a clear, easy-to-read, and complete overview of the origins of the imperial crisis, the course of the war, and the ultimate success of the movement for independence. It also emphasizes the human cost of the struggle: the ferocity of the fighting that stemmed from the belief among participants on all sides that defeat was tantamount to cultural, political, and even physical extinction. The narrative encompasses the author's original insights and takes advantage of the newest scholarship on the American Revolution. The book includes primary documents and biographical sketches representative of the various participants in the revolutionary struggle—for example, private soldiers, senior officers, loyalists, women, blacks, and Indians—as well as famous speeches and important American and British official documents. The edited documents offer readers a sense of the actual voices of the revolutionary struggle and a deeper understanding of how primary documents serve historians' narration and interpretation of long-ago events. The result is a new synthesis that brings a deeper understanding of America's defining struggle to an informed public readership as well as college and high school students.
