Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from With the Mounted Infantry in South Africa: Being Side-Lights on the Boer Campaign 1899-1902 In June and July I made expeditions to the neighbourhood of Laing's Nek, for a fight there was looked upon in those days as a certainty, and it would be a great advantage to know the ground. The historical interest of the ride along the Nek from Majuba to the Buffalo was greatly added to by the feeling that we might some day soon be either attacking the south side or resisting an attack from the north. The feeling on the border was already strained, and there was considerable uneasiness at Charlestown, where, I remember, there was a meeting of the residents to discuss what they should do in the event of war, should Charlestown not be held by our troops. A retirement on Newcastle was decided on by all the residents except one, an old soldier, who voted for forming a laager and resisting to the end. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Side Lights on South Africa South It is curious how repugnant to the mind of the average woman is the mere suggestion of six thousand miles of sea. Even if she has outgrown the idea that home necessarily means a house, whose four walls enclose all the green years of her youth and the golden years of her maturity, the more popular corners of Europe usually afford her sufficient space in which to revive the atrophied tissues of her mind and her body. That spiritual phthisis, which only interminable journeying can cure, is fortunately neither a common nor a contagious complaint. Book Synopsis Empire from the Margins by : Gordon L. Heath
Download or read book Empire from the Margins written by Gordon L. Heath and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-11-29 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the beginning of the twentieth century, there were a number of smaller religious bodies that sought to develop religious and national identity on the margins—something especially difficult when the nation was at war in South Africa. This book examines rich and varied extant sources that provide helpful windows into the wartime experience of Canada’s religious minorities. Those groups on the margins experienced internal struggles and external pressures related to issues of loyalty and identity. How each faith tradition addressed those challenges was shaped by their own dominant personalities, ethnic identity, history, tradition, and theological convictions. Responses were fluid, divided, and rarely unanimous. Those seeking to address such issues not only had to deal with internal expectations and tensions, but also construct a public response that would satisfy often hostile and vocal external critics. Some positions evolved over time, leading to new identities, loyalties, and trajectories. In all cases, being on the margins meant dealing with two dominant national and imperial narratives—English or French—both bolstered respectively by powerful Anglo-Saxon Protestantism or French Quebec Catholicism. The chapters in this book examine how those on the margins sought to do just that.

Book Synopsis History of South Africa since September 1795 by :
Download or read book History of South Africa since September 1795 written by and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1908 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George McCall Theal (1837-1919) was a prolific South African historian and civil servant. After working as a missionary between 1875-1880 he was appointed magistrate of Tamacha before taking a position as a clerk in the government and became Keeper of the Cape Colony Archives. He was appointed Colonial Historiographer in 1891. These volumes, first published in 1908, contain Theal's detailed history of South Africa between 1795-1894. Focusing on the political history of the country, Theal explores the British control of Cape Colony and the reactions of the Dutch setters to increasing British immigration, discussing the political consequences of the establishment of the various Boer Republics and the growth of Zulu power in South Africa. These volumes provide valuable details on the political history of South Africa, and reveal contemporary attitudes towards the history and ideas of colonisation. Volume 3 covers the colonies between 1846-1860.
