Book excerpt: This volume draws attention to the plight of urban blacks in the contemporary world and links their situation across five key global regions. It argues that while the world's population is predominantly urban, persons of African descent are disproportionately urbanized and impoverished, and it shows how significant changes in the global arena, among them new information technology, the increased hegemony of market structures, and the resulting socioeconomic instability, have altered the material circumstances of these and other poor and working-class urban dwellers. The book argues further that although the problems triggered by the late-twentieth-century challenge appear to impact blacks uniformly, the societal and cultural-specific dimensions of their plight should not be overlooked. Its findings and implications buttress the need for greater unity among urban blacks in the diaspora, as well as offer solutions that are sensitive to their societal and cultural differences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This literature review has the goals of: (1) reviewing and summarizing the existing research literature on factors which influence the success of collaboration; and (2) reporting the results of the research literature review so that people who want to initiate or enhance a collaborative effort can benefit from the experience of others. The review used computer-based bibliographies, contacted researchers interested in the topic, and tracked down bibliographic references in each document obtained. The scope of the search included the health, social science, education, and public affairs arenas. From the 133 studies examined, the screening excluded those documents that were general "how to" manuals, did not meet the definition of collaboration, or failed to meet other research criteria. After the screening, 18 studies remained and were reviewed carefully. The findings of the studies were blended together to identify 19 factors that influence successful collaboration. Contains 32 references. (EH)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The instability of fluid flows is a key topic in classical fluid mechanics because it has huge repercussions for applied disciplines such as chemical engineering, hydraulics, aeronautics, and geophysics. This modern introduction is written for any student, researcher, or practitioner working in the area, for whom an understanding of hydrodynamic instabilities is essential. Based on a decade's experience of teaching postgraduate students in fluid dynamics, this book brings the subject to life by emphasizing the physical mechanisms involved. The theory of dynamical systems provides the basic structure of the exposition, together with asymptotic methods. Wherever possible, Charru discusses the phenomena in terms of characteristic scales and dimensional analysis. The book includes numerous experimental studies, with references to videos and multimedia material, as well as over 150 exercises which introduce the reader to new problems.
