Book excerpt: The word conservation, when used in the context of the preservation of built heritage, implies an intrinsically complex concept that evolved over time, since it has been influenced by the perception of history throughout time. This volume emphasises why an understanding of the cultural evolution of the conservation approach must be considered a prerequisite for architects and engineers if they are to cooperate in full harmony with historic-artistic culture for the preservation of global built heritage. In particular, the volume highlights how, during the second half of the last century, the preservation process also involved engineering – the science of making practical applications of knowledge – which, for a long time, made an uncritical use of techniques and materials and devised interventions on historical heritage that were heavily invasive. The development of the themes is articulated in two sessions dealing with the aspects related to the analysis and mapping of Architectural Heritage to face the context of the current Climate Crisis and the development of projects and experimentations oriented to the Green and Digital Transition. The evolution of the concept of Heritage, as conceived by the United Nations 2030 Agenda and in the Green Deal and New European Bauhaus, aimed at constructing an inclusive and universally recognised definition to support supranational objectives of sustainable human development, gives rise to innovative strategies, methodologies and technologies that—in a direction of mitigation, contrast and adaptation to climate change—allow for the safeguard, renewed management and a hope for valorisation of Heritage on a national scale. In this direction, the understanding of Architectural Heritage as a 'non-renewable resource' determines the need to activate design experimentation laboratories oriented towards regeneration, articulated and complex, which require, in order to respond to the challenges posed by our era, a sensitive and dialogic multidisciplinary vision of a holistic type. In fact, on the one hand, it is necessary to redefine the usability and management methods of built heritage through the adoption of digital, mobility, energy, ecological, social, green and blue infrastructures; on the other hand, it is necessary to introduce new qualitative and quantitative parameters and performance indicators, adequate to verify the validity of the implemented strategies in a perspective of adaptation to climate change, able to clarify contents, processes and tools to contrast future risks. The pursuit of these objectives refers to the innovation of training paths, professionalising procedures, administrative regulations, and public policies that involve citizens and the private partnership towards a different project qualification and empowerment of stakeholders, inhabitants, professionals, and clients. The Technological Project makes it possible to activate different interventions aimed at acting, in an integrated manner, on assets, context and communities, according to an approach that reinterprets them on a common score, as proposed by the European Next Generation programme in three priority aspects: digitalisation and innovation, environmental transition, increased resilience and social sustainability of national economies. In this scenario, the interventions aimed at outlining sustainable development actions will have to place these concepts at the centre in a harmonious vision that starts from the recognition and enhancement of the Architectural Heritage, recognising it as a fundamental asset of the territories.

Book excerpt: Il Novecento ci ha consegnato una interessante evoluzione del concetto stesso di bene culturale architettonico e urbano, dalla identificazione selettiva del monumento alla contestualizzazione del monumento, alla monumentalizzazione del contesto (ambiente naturale, manufatti storici, stratificazione storica degli usi antropici del territorio). Tale evoluzione ha arricchito e dilatato in misura significativa il campo di interesse in ordine alle azioni di tutela, conservazione e valorizzazione dei beni. Il progetto di conservazione del bene storico-architettonico, nella accezione attuale, si pone in alternativa all'intervento (straordinario) di restauro classicamente inteso, riferendosi, secondo la impostazione teorico-metodologica del restauro preventivo, piuttosto all'intervento (ordinario) di manutenzione e di conservazione programmata. Tali presupposti implicano una ampia, interdisciplinare e organizzata base conoscitiva, mirata allo specifico architettonico in tutti i suoi aspetti (storici, formali, figurativi, simbolici, costruttivi, funzionali...) e anche nella sua realtà contestuale urbana e ambientale, in grado di selezionare e orientare le scelte operative. Conoscenza finalizzata certamente al progetto, ma anche alla diagnostica, al monitoraggio del cantiere e al check up continuo dell'edificio nel tempo. Si esige dunque la possibilità e la capacità di gestire, in maniera visuale, relazionata e dinamica, una notevole massa di informazioni, peraltro fortemente eterogenea per caratteristiche proprie e per formati. Il programma di ricerca si propone di fornire un contributo innovativo in ordine alla definizione delle modalità organizzative e procedurali mirate alla costruzione di data base integrati, finalizzati alla documentazione, e alle azioni di tutela, conservazione e valorizzazione del patrimonio architettonico e urbano, nonché al loro utilizzo da parte degli Enti pubblici territoriali e di operatori tecnico-professionali. Il campo di indagine è lo specifico architettonico, nella sua relazione contestuale urbana, e la città storicizzata, nel suo insieme, quale risultato del processo storico di formazione e trasformazione sino all'attualità. I casi di studio sono individuati da ciascuna Unità di ricerca in riferimento al proprio territorio di ambito. Un significativo contributo su una tematica di permanente attualità, atteso che la emergenza del terremoto ha drammaticamente riproposto la carenza di conoscenza sistemica, organizzata e finalizzata, dei beni storico-architettonici presenti sul territorio.
