Book excerpt: Follow the money in this gripping literary puzzle—the fourth and final installment of Sarah Caudwell’s brilliant Hilary Tamar mystery series. “Sarah Caudwell is one of my very favorite mystery writers.”—A. J. Finn, New York Times bestselling author of The Woman in the Window Julia Larwood’s Aunt Regina needs help. She and two friends pooled their modest resources and invested in equities. Now the tax man demands his due, but they’ve already spent the money. How can they dig themselves out of the tax hole? Even more to the point: Can the sin of capital gains trigger corporeal loss? That’s a question for the sibyl, psychic counselor Isabella del Comino, who has offended Aunt Regina and her friends by moving into the rectory, plowing under a cherished garden, and establishing an aviary of ravens. When Isabella is found dead, all clues point to death by fiscal misadventure. So Julia calls in an old friend and Oxford fellow, Professor Hilary Tamar, to follow a money trail that connects Aunt Regina to what appears to be capital fraud—and capital crime. The two women couldn’t have a better champion than the erudite Hilary. Once again Sarah Caudwell sweeps us into the scene of the crime, leaving us to ponder the greatest mystery of all: Hilary themself. Don’t miss any of Sarah Caudwell’s riveting Hilary Tamar mysteries: THUS WAS ADONIS MURDERED • THE SHORTEST WAY TO HADES • THE SIRENS SANG OF MURDER • THE SIBYL IN HER GRAVE

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost 100 years old!! Joyce said to me, “You are so cute.” Me cute? I was never called cute when I was a little girl, and now that I am almost 100 years old, I am cute? This really gives me a chuckle. I am sitting at my daughter’s home in my own recliner that was brought from my house. They took me kicking and screaming from my home, not literally but inside. Someone took my most prized possession, my sewing machine, which, even if it is a treadle sewing machine, it has brought me much joy. I sewed many of my dresses on it and when I started making cloth dolls it served me well. I made over 100 cloth dolls and for each doll I made dresses, bonnets, booties and bloomers. I gave them to anyone who wanted to have a cuddly doll to hold. I taught the little girls next door how to sew doll clothes, a skill they can take into adulthood, I hope. I have written my childhood memories many times. I still like to go back in time in my mind. I can’t get around as fast as I used to, even if I walk often for exercise. I can still read and pray and think of the dear friends I left behind that met in my home most Sundays for fellowship. I always brought my sweet rolls to the potlucks we shared. We had good visits and laughter. I love remembering the ministers who I had in my home through the years. What a privilege it was. The spirit they showed by their life encouraged me in my faith. I have had a good long life. The sad times I can’t forget, and it makes me almost cry. I will never forget when my baby died, waking up and finding her cold. Or the terrible time my son got run over and died. There was much horror and sorrow when my daughter and her family were burned in a plane crash. I lost my three grandchildren and dear Ginna was burned so badly. It has been 30 years since my husband died suddenly. Ruth lived with me for eight years, but her heart gave out and she died. LeRoy’s body could no longer work because of the ravages of myotonic muscular dystrophy and he is gone. Only three of my children left. I can’t face losing another one. I still remember what my Grandpa told me. He said whenever you are sad or have the blues, just get busy and do nice things for others. It will take your thoughts off of yourself. I read books that take me to the places that I can only travel to in my mind. Once while staying with my granddaughter I was so engrossed in a book and right when it got to a scary part she gave out a big sneeze and it made me jump.

But this sexy new neighbor in a small Georgia town, circa 1960, may be lying. After all, her main goal seems to be milking her story in order to keep her husband, Robert, under her thumb while also enchanting his best friend, P.W. For plain-Jane Earlene, P.W.'s wife, Sibyl's suspicious motives include a bewildering mix of syrupy kindness and sly cruelty. Earlene's attempts to point out Sibyl's behavior to others in town sound petty toward a dying woman. Who is Sibyl, really? Her lavish spending hints at a hidden source for money, since Robert isn't rich. How is it possible to be both repelled and hypnotized by her? There are secrets waiting to be exposed. Janice Daugharty's 1997 novel, EARL IN THE YELLOW SHIRT (HarperCollins), was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. She is the author of ten acclaimed novels, five other novels in ebook-only format, and two short story collections--GOING THROUGH THE CHANGE and more recently GOING TO JACKSON. Book excerpt: Marcia Mellon, author of TV scripts and detective stories, comes to the Palazzo Agrippina at Arco Felice, just outside Pozzuoli on the Bay of Naples, where the fumaroles at the Phlegraean Fields smoulder like smoke vents from Hell, and in the distance, Mt. Vesuvius rises above the bay, quiescent but menacing. A disparate group of students have enrolled in the Palazzo Agrippinas summer program, bound together by a common interest in Roman archaeology. The director, DeWitt Fordham hopes to be appointed dean of his college, and his assistant, Dr. Alex, hopes to take Fordhams place. Decimus Monroe Thatcher, president the society sponsoring Palazzo Agrippina program has come to inspect the session, and with him is son Conradin, a troubled teenager who is a disappointment to his father. Nearby, connected by a path to Palazzo Agrippina back yard, is the Albergo Felice, a small hotel and bar, , where the sinister Luigi and his cousin Tony are in charge. Its bar is a favorite watering hole for students at the Palazzo. There are two deaths or are they murders? Did Conradin commit suicide? Marcia thinks it was murder. The reader must decide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Burial Plots in British Detective Fiction offers an overview of the ways in which the past is brought back to the surface and influences the present in British detective fiction written between 1920 and 2020. Exploring a range of authors including Agatha Christie, Patricia Wentworth, Val McDermid, Sarah Caudwell, Georgette Heyer, Dorothy Dunnett, Jonathan Stroud and Ben Aaronovitch, Lisa Hopkins argues that both the literal and literary disinterment of the past use elements of the national past to interrogate the present. As such, in the texts discussed, uncovering the truth about an individual crime is also typically an uncovering of a more general connection between the present and the past. Whether detective novels explore murders on archaeological digs, hauntings, cold crimes or killings at Christmas, Hopkins explores the underlying message that you cannot understand the present unless you understand the past.
