This book was released on 2018 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long-term creep and shrinkage behaviors of concrete can greatly affect the serviceability and constructability of prestressed concrete structures. To account for these effects, it is necessary to reliably predict the deformations of the concrete through time. These calculations are particularly challenging for precast, prestressed girders, for which fabricators often use accelerated curing regimes (hot-curing) to make the concrete gain strength faster and thus increase girder production rates. With the exception of a recent study at the University of Washington (Magnuson 2016), little data previously exists on the creep and shrinkage behavior of concrete for such a curing regime. Current prediction models of creep and shrinkage have been calibrated using ambient-cured concrete tests and assume a constant stress history. They deal with variable stress histories by applying the principle of superposition. The validity of the application of the principle of superposition to creep strains has been questioned by many, and it is not computationally convenient. The objectives of this research were (1) to collect additional data on the creep and shrinkage of hot-cured concrete, (2) to study the effect of hot-curing concrete further and (3) to validate the functionality of a model proposed by Magnuson. The additional data verified that creep is affected by the hot-curing but it suggested that shrinkage strain are not affected. Several configurations of the model were calibrated, and a reasonable fit was achieved to creep data from concrete with a diverse set of loading histories. A previously suggested and simpler version of the model showed comparable results (but slightly worse), which questions the necessity of the more complex version of the model.
Book Synopsis Shrinkage and Creep in Prestressed Concrete by : Perry H. Petersen
Download or read book Shrinkage and Creep in Prestressed Concrete written by Perry H. Petersen and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The loss of prestress resulting from creep and shrinkage in concrete was investigated for concrete specime * ns made with Type I portland cement and with Type III portland cement.Forty-nine sets of specimens were fabricated and tested; each set consisted of a prestressed specimen and an otherwise identical companion specimen without reinforcement. The length changes with time were observed at intervals up to an age of 500 days. These observations were made for concretes subjected to different levels of prestress, and for concretes prestressed at different ages.Length changes in nonreinforced companion specimens were also obtained. Thus this study is concerned with elastic deformation occurring at time of stress transfer, shrinkage or swelling, and creep.(Author).
Book Synopsis Fundamental Research on Creep and Shrinkage of Concrete by : F.H. Wittmann

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today research on creep and shrinkage of concrete is diversified to such a degree that specialists working in different areas sometimes find it difficult to understand one-another. Materials scientists are mainly interested in processes on a microstructural level but they do not necessarily understand the relevance of time dependent deformation in structural design. On the other hand engineers who apply simplified model laws in non-elastic structural analysis are not always in the position to judge the limitations implied in their approach. It is generally realized that further development can be stimulated by a more effective exchange of results and ideas among the different groups involved. In an attempt to bridge this obvious gap in September 1980 there was a Conference organized at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne. The papers presented at this meeting covered the wide range starting with microstructural aspects and mechanisms and including constitutive modelling and structural creep analysis. These contributions together with summaries of two panel discussions are being published in this volume. All serious of the meeting have been introduced by invited lectures. These papers will be published in a special volume "Creep and Moisture Effects in Concrete". This special volume is rather to be a general survey of the different areas covered while the present conference proceedings provide a unique selection of research papers. Nowadays time-dependent deformation of concrete can be taken into consideration realistically by computerized structural analysis.
