Book Synopsis Ultranationalism in German-Japanese Relations, 1930-1945 by : John Chapman
Download or read book Ultranationalism in German-Japanese Relations, 1930-1945 written by John Chapman and published by Global Oriental. This book was released on 2011-04-06 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important new study focusing on the ultranationalist regimes in Germany and Japan during the 1930s and 1940s examines in biographical format the roles played by individuals significantly involved in the drive for global hegemony. Employing a considerable range of new source materials and eyewitness testimony on the German side, it highlights the roles of the Nazi Party ‘enforcer’ and Gestapo representative in East Asia, Josef Albert Meisinger, and of the officer commanding German naval forces in the Pacific region, Admiral Paul Werner Wenneker, agent Richard Sorge as whose relations with the Japanese Navy in the 1930s were observed and recalled by Engineer-Commander George C. Ross, the UK assistant naval attaché in Japan. The reactions of the German aero-engineer, Willi Foerster, a client of the Soviet radio operator, Max Clausen, to both Meisinger and Wenneker in the 1940s are also documented. On the Japanese side, new evidence is employed which examines the influence of the right-wing business and political figure, Sasagawa Ryôichi, on domestic events during the era of ‘Tennô-fascism’ and its aftermath. Similarly, an analysis of the role of the head of wartime Japanese military intelligence in eastern Europe, General Onodera Makoto, based in Stockholm, indicates the extent of opposition within the Japanese army to factional groups wedded to Nazi ideology and strategy and the ongoing support in Japan for anti-Soviet and anti-communist policies in the post-war era.
Download or read book The Hatoyama Dynasty written by M. Itoh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-11-07 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a multi-generational political history of the Hatoyamas, a family that has participated at the highest levels of Japan's parliamentary government from its inception in the late 1800s. The Hatoyama family is one of the most prominent political families in modern Japanese government. It has produced six members of the Diet, Japan's parliament, many of whom have served as cabinet members and party leaders. Due to the family's political legacy, they have often been likened to the Kennedy family in American politics (though they have been spared the tragedy and scandal visited upon the Kennedys). Despite the significance of the Hatoyamas to modern Japanese politics, this is the first comprehensive study available in English. In tracing the rising political fortunes of this family, it is also possible to study the role of hereditary politicians in Japan, the growth and evolution of Japanese political parties, and, perhaps most importantly, the way political leadership functions in Japan, a society known more for consensus-building than strong leaders.
Book Synopsis Satoyama--satoumi Ecosystems and Human Well-being by : Anantha K. Duraiappah
Download or read book Satoyama--satoumi Ecosystems and Human Well-being written by Anantha K. Duraiappah and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Satoyama" is a Japanese term describing mosaic landscapes of different ecosystems--secondary forests, farm lands, irrigation ponds and grasslands--along with human settlements managed to produce bundles of ecosystem services for human wellbeing. The concept of "satoyama," longstanding traditions associated with land management practices that allow sustainable use of natural resources, has been extended to cover marine and coastal ecosystems ( "satoumi"). These landscapes and seascapes have been rapidly changing, and the ecosystem services they provide are under threat from various social, economic, political, and technological factors. "Satoyama-Satoumi Ecosystems and Human Well-Being" presents the findings of the Japan Satoyama Satoumi Assessment (JSSA), a study of the interaction between humans and ecosystems in Japan. It was written by the 200-plus authors, stakeholders, and reviewers from Japan and elsewhere who make up the JSSA team. The study analyzes changes that have occurred in "satoyama-satoumi" ecosystems over the last 50 years and identifies plausible future scenarios for the year 2050, taking into account various drivers such as governmental and economic policy, climate change, technology, and sociobehavioral responses. This provides a new approach to land-use planning that addresses not only economic development but also cultural values and ecological integrity. This book is a key reference text for development planners, policymakers, scientists, postgraduate students, and others interested in the environment and development.

Book Synopsis The Ideologies of Japanese Tea by : Tim Cross
Download or read book The Ideologies of Japanese Tea written by Tim Cross and published by Global Oriental. This book was released on 2009-09-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This provoking new study of the Japanese tea ceremony (chanoyu) examines the ideological foundation of its place in history and the broader context of Japanese cultural values where it has emerged as a so called ‘quintessential’ component of the culture. It was in fact, Sen Soshitsu Xl, grandmaster of Urasenke, today the most globally prominent tea school, who argued in 1872 that tea should be viewed as the expression of the moral universe of the nation. A practising teamaster himself, the author argues, however, that tea was many other things: it was privilege, politics, power and the lever for passion and commitment in the theatre of war. Through a methodological framework rooted in current approaches, he demonstrates how the iconic images as supposedly timeless examples of Japanese tradition have been the subject of manipulation as ideological tools and speaks to presentations of cultural identity in Japanese society today.

Download or read book Qiaowu written by James Jiann Hua To and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-05-15 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over 150 years, China’s interactions with its diaspora have evolved according to the domestic and international geopolitical environment. This relationship (broadly described as qiaowu) is most visible in the form of cultural and economic activities; however, its main purpose is to cultivate, influence, and manage ethnic Chinese as part of a global transnational project to rally support for its proponents. Qiaowu: Extra-Territorial Policies for the Overseas Chinese compares the rival policies and practices of the Chinese Communist Party with the Nationalist Kuomintang and Democratic Progressive Party governments of Taiwan. Political scientist James Jiann Hua To analyzes the role that qiaowu plays in harnessing the power of strategic overseas communities, and highlights the implications for China’s foreign relations.
