Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of the first international symposium devoted to research on the evaluation and planning of new person-to-person telecommunication systems. It was sponsored by NATO's Special Programme Panel on Systems Science and took place, in September 1977, at the University of Bergamo in the north of Italy. Telecommunication systems which provide for communication be tween people, rather than computers or other instruments, are of two kinds. There are mass communication systems (broadcast radio and television) and interpersonal systems (for example, the telephone and Telex) which join together individuals or small groups. Here we have included in the interpersonal category certain systems for re trieving information from computers, essentially those systems in which the role of the computer 1s primarily to act as a store and to identify that information which best fits a user's request. (This excludes management information systems in which the computer performs important transformation functions. ) Distinctions between interpersonal and mass communication sys tems, and between these two and da ta communication systems, are increasingly breaking down for those who provide the services. (In the U. K. broadcasters are piloting information retrieval services and the British Post Office is competing with a more sophisticated sys tem which could also be used for the exchange of messages. Elsewhere computer da ta networks are increasingly employed for the exchange of personal messages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design process has always been central to construction, but recent years have seen its significance increase, and the ways of approaching it multiply. To an increasing degree, other stakeholders such as contractors have input at the design stage, and the designer’s role includes tasks that were traditionally the realm of other professions. This presents challenges as well as opportunities, and both are introduced, discussed, and analysed in Collaborative Design Management. Case studies from the likes of ARUP, Buro Happold, VINCI Construction UK Ltd, and CIOB show how technologies (BIM, podcasting), innovative working (information management, collaboration), and the evolution of roles (the designer-contractor interface, environmental compliance) have changed design management as a process. Starting from a basic level, the reader is introduced to the key themes and background to the design management role, including definitions of the responsibilities now commonly involved, and the strategic importance of design. Influential technologies currently in use are evaluated, and the importance they are likely to have in future is explored. This combination of case studies from leading practitioners, clear explanations of design management roles and activities, and an exploration of how to succesfully achieve collaborative design management makes this a highly topical and uniquely valuable book. This is essential reading for professionals and students of all levels interested in construction design management, from all AEC backgrounds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transport managers perform an essential and rewarding function in society, controlling the infrastructure that allows people and goods to move around conveniently and swiftly. However, it is also highly demanding work. In clear, jargon-free language, this book explains the exceptionally wide range of skills demanded of transport managers, who must understand the economic, social, political and technical aspects of road, rail, air and sea transport, while, crucially, ensuring that levels of safety and reliability are not compromised. Managing Transport Operations is a comprehensive, accessible handbook, covering: the fundamental principles of transport; modal characteristics; ownership and organization; management functions and policy formation; transport marketing; safety regulations; economic regulation; logistics and transport; urban transport; new technology; future developments. This new edition has been fully revised and updated to take account of recent major developments that have taken place in the world of transport, including the function of the Strategic Rail Authority, the Transport Act 2000 and the restructuring of the Department of Transport, Local Government and the Regions. Tailored to meet the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport syllabuses for Transport Management, this book is a `must-have' resource for students and an essential companion for transport managers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Telecommunications and the City provides the first critical and state-of-the-art review of the relations between telecommunications and all aspects of city development and management. Drawing on a range of theoretical approaches and a wide body of recent research, the book addresses key academic and policy debates about technological change and the future of cities with a fresh perspective. Through this approach, the complex and crucial transformations underway in cities in which telecommunications have central importance are mapped out and illustrated. Key areas where telecommunications impinge on the economic, social, physical, enviromental and institutional development of cities are illustrated by using boxed extracts and wide range of case study examples from Europe, Japan and North America. Rejecting the extremes of optimism and pessimism in current hype about cities and telecommunications, Telecommunications and the City offers a sophisticated new perspective through which city-telecommunications relations can be understood.
