Book excerpt: Shot peening procedures developed over the past 40 years have resulted in substantial improvements in fatigue properties and stress corrosion resistance of high-strength alloys. These improvements have been observed in shot-peened specimens and components of high-strength steels, aluminum alloys, titanium alloys, and other engineering alloys. This report contains information on peening procedures that have been used in processing specimens and components to achieve these improvements in performance. Certain precautions are pointed out that should be observed in order to obtain the improved properties that have been attributed to the peening process. Some of the peening programs cited in this report indicate the peening intensities that resulted in the greatest benefit in performance based on test data covering a range of intensities, shot sizes, and other variables. Book excerpt: Shot peening has been proved to be a powerful instrument in enhancing the resistance of materials to various kinds of stress-induced damage, particularly against damage due to cyclic loading (fatigue) in air or in aggressive environments. As shot peening can be used for a wide variety of structural components irrespective of shape and dimensions, the number of shot peening applications in many industrial branches is increasing. The use of peen forming as a technique to form large metal parts into complicated shapes is also increasing, particularly in the aerospace industry. The Conference covers all aspects of the Science, Technology and Application of Shot Peening, and was intended to attract users, manufacturers as well as scientists working in the field of "Materials Treatment by Shot Peening". Emphasis was put on the current state of knowledge and research. This book offers scientists and engineers an unique opportunity to update their knowledge on shot peening.

Book excerpt: This manual on shot peening is intended to be a practical aid to engineers, designers, and operators in the shop, and points out some of the possibilities and some of the limitations of the process. Shot peening may be defined as the process of cold working the surface of a structural or machine part by means of a propelled stream of spherical shot. The process is used to improve the fatigue properties of the part, and to retard stress corrosion cracking, by the introduction of compressive stresses in the surface layer. The presence of this layer of compressive stress serves as a retardant to initiation and growth of failure cracks. Shot peening is not the only method by which these beneficial surface stresses may be introduced into a part. The most important of the other methods are as follows: 1. Cold working by rolling, by stretching, by compressing, by bending, and by twisting. These techniques are covered in SAE J811, Surface Rolling and Other Methods for Mechanical Prestressing of Metals (4); 2. Heat treating and in particular, surface treatments by induction and flame treating; 3. Changing the chemical composition of the surface layer by carburizing, nitriding, etc.; 4.Coining: Stress coining is a cold work technique in which pressure is exerted to compress metal in and/or around holes or slots beyond its elastic limit into a plastic state. Application is by hydraulic press, mechanical press, or electromagnetic shockwaves. Shot peening possesses several advantages over any of these methods, such as flexibility to geometry, control of stress intensity, safety from the point of view of not introducing unwanted or harmful stresses by accident and, in many instances, economy. Contents include: Description of Process; Effect of Shot Peening; Shot Peening Machines; Peening Media; Quality Control; Theory of How Fatigue Properties Are Improved by Shot Peening; Methods for the Determination of Residual Stresses; Special Applications; SAE Specifications and Recommended Practices; References.

This book was released on 2005 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 300M steel is widely used in aircraft landing gear because of its unique combination of strength and fracture toughness, but is vulnerable to foreign object damage (FOD), corrosion fatigue, and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) failures with potentially catastrophic consequences. The fatigue, corrosion fatigue in salt water, and SCC performance of LPB processed 300M steel was compared with shot peened (SP) and low stress ground (LSG) conditions. LPB, with and without simulated FOD, produced deep residual compression that dramatically improved both the HCF and corrosion fatigue strength. The fatigue strength of LSG and SP treated surfaces was drastically reduced by salt and FOD exposure with no discernible endurance limit for corrosion fatigue conditions. SCC testing of LPB treated landing gear sections at 1030 to 2270 MPa (150 to 180 ksi) static loads was terminated after 1500 hrs without failure, compared to failure in as little as 13 hours without treatment. Mechanistically, the deep compressive surface residual stresses from LPB treatment mitigated both the individual and synergistic effects of corrosion fatigue and FOD. LPB also reduced the surface stress well below the SCC threshold for 300M, even under high tensile applied stresses, effectively suppressing the SCC failure mechanism.

Book excerpt: Specialty Steels and Hard Materials covers the proceedings of the International Conference on Recent Developments in Specialty Steels and Hard Materials (Materials Development '82). The main focus of the materials in the selection is on the microstructural detail, alloy design, processing technology, applications, and economic viability. The first part of the title presents the invited papers in the conference; this part includes topics such as toughness in high speed steels and hard metals; the use of vanadium in low alloy structural steels; and design of strong, ductile, duplex low alloy steels. The second part of the text covers topics about high strength low alloy steels, stainless steels, and rapid solidification processing. The last part of selection deals with tungsten carbide-cobalt hard metals, non-oxide ceramics, and sintered polycrystalline ultra-hard materials. The book will be of great interest to students, researchers, and practitioners of materials engineering and metallurgy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finish Manufacturing Processes are those final stage processing techniques which are deployed to bring a product to readiness for marketing and putting in service. Over recent decades a number of finish manufacturing processes have been newly developed by researchers and technologists. Many of these developments have been reported and illustrated in existing literature in a piecemeal manner or in relation only to specific applications. For the first time, Comprehensive Materials Finishing, Three Volume Set integrates a wide body of this knowledge and understanding into a single, comprehensive work. Containing a mixture of review articles, case studies and research findings resulting from R & D activities in industrial and academic domains, this reference work focuses on how some finish manufacturing processes are advantageous for a broad range of technologies. These include applicability, energy and technological costs as well as practicability of implementation. The work covers a wide range of materials such as ferrous, non-ferrous and polymeric materials. There are three main distinct types of finishing processes: Surface Treatment by which the properties of the material are modified without generally changing the physical dimensions of the surface; Finish Machining Processes by which a small layer of material is removed from the surface by various machining processes to render improved surface characteristics; and Surface Coating Processes by which the surface properties are improved by adding fine layer(s) of materials with superior surface characteristics. Each of these primary finishing processes is presented in its own volume for ease of use, making Comprehensive Materials Finishing an essential reference source for researchers and professionals at all career stages in academia and industry. Provides an interdisciplinary focus, allowing readers to become familiar with the broad range of uses for materials finishing Brings together all known research in materials finishing in a single reference for the first time Includes case studies that illustrate theory and show how it is applied in practice
