Book Synopsis Qualified Teacher Shortage in Ghanaian Primary Schools by : Yaw Afari Ankomah
Download or read book Qualified Teacher Shortage in Ghanaian Primary Schools written by Yaw Afari Ankomah and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-02 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schools in Ghana have persistently been facing shortage of teachers over the years. The study investigated the possible causes of the shortage of qualified teachers in Ghanaian primary schools with specific focus on how policies and practices on teacher education, deployment and challenges of retention contribute to the shortage situation. The main data collected for the study comprised pupils' enrollment trends and statistics on teacher training, deployment and attrition. It was confirmed that Ghanaian primary schools faced both real and disguised forms of teacher shortages in significant proportions. Whereas there were many classrooms with no teachers, many unqualified teachers were also used which tended to cover up the real magnitude of the shortage of qualified teachers in the schools. Quota ceilings set by government in respect of colleges of education admissions as well as the granting of study leave to teachers have been contributing significantly to teacher shortages at the primary schools. Consequently, granting of study leave and the payment of stipend which influences decisions on quota ceilings for admissions into teacher colleges need to be given a critical look.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Education Policy Research by : Gary Sykes
Download or read book Handbook of Education Policy Research written by Gary Sykes and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2012-09-10 with total page 1062 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Co-published by Routledge for the American Educational Research Association (AERA) Educational policy continues to be of major concern. Policy debates about economic growth and national competitiveness, for example, commonly focus on the importance of human capital and a highly educated workforce. Defining the theoretical boundaries and methodological approaches of education policy research are the two primary themes of this comprehensive, AERA-sponsored Handbook. Organized into seven sections, the Handbook focuses on (1) disciplinary foundations of educational policy, (2) methodological perspectives, (3) the policy process, (4) resources, management, and organization, (5) teaching and learning policy, (6) actors and institutions, and (7) education access and differentiation. Drawing from multiple disciplines, the Handbook’s over one hundred authors address three central questions: What policy issues and questions have oriented current policy research? What research strategies and methods have proven most fruitful? And what issues, questions, and methods will drive future policy research? Topics such as early childhood education, school choice, access to higher education, teacher accountability, and testing and measurement cut across the 63 chapters in the volume. The politics surrounding these and other issues are objectively analyzed by authors and commentators. Each of the seven sections concludes with two commentaries by leading scholars in the field. The first considers the current state of policy design, and the second addresses the current state of policy research. This book is appropriate for scholars and graduate students working in the field of education policy and for the growing number of academic, government, and think-tank researchers engaged in policy research. Defined autonomy creates an effective balance of centralized direction and individualized empowerment that allows building-level staff the stylistic freedom to respond quickly and effectively to student failure.
Book Synopsis Latinization of U.S. Schools by : Jason Irizarry
Download or read book Latinization of U.S. Schools written by Jason Irizarry and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-03 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fueled largely by significant increases in the Latino population, the racial, ethnic, and linguistic texture of the United States is changing rapidly. Nowhere is this 'Latinisation' of America more evident than in schools. The dramatic population growth among Latinos in the United States has not been accompanied by gains in academic achievement. Estimates suggest that approximately half of Latino students fail to complete high school, and few enroll in and complete college. The Latinization of U.S. Schools centres on the voices of Latino youth. It examines how the students themselves make meaning of the policies and practices within schools. The student voices expose an inequitable opportunity structure that results in depressed academic performance for many Latino youth. Each chapter concludes with empirically based recommendations for educators seeking to improve their practice with Latino youth, stemming from a multiyear participatory action research project conducted by Irizarry and the student contributors to the text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Broader, Bolder, Better, authors Elaine Weiss, of the Broader, Bolder Approach to Education campaign, and Paul Reville, former Massachusetts secretary of education, make a compelling case for a fundamental change in the way we view education. The authors argue for a large-scale expansion of community-school partnerships in order to provide holistic, integrated student supports (ISS) from cradle to career, including traditional wraparound services like health, mental health, nutrition, and family supports, as well as expanded access to opportunities such as early childhood education, afterschool activities, and summer enrichment programs. The book builds on nearly a decade of research by the Broader, Bolder Approach to Education, a national initiative endorsed by more than sixty policy experts and leaders from across the country, and draws on the work of Harvard’s Education Redesign Lab. It pulls from case studies of effective ISS efforts in twelve diverse communities to illustrate the variety of strategies that can be adopted locally. A call to action that also provides examples of communities that are successfully leveling the playing field for poor children, this book offers a detailed vision for building—through field work, mobilization, and financing—comprehensive systems to prepare all children for success.
