Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Short Story Press Presents Getting Micky Dolenz by Alicia Voss-Guillen “Getting Micky Dolenz” is a funny, touching, heart-warming story that will appeal equally to young adults, pop-culture lovers, and Monkees fans of all ages. Peppered with humor and full of heart, this is the tale of Julie Desmond—or, as she likes to call herself—Julie Desmond Dolenz, a thirteen-year-old living in the psychedelic sixties who is absolutely ape over drummer Micky Dolenz of the sensational, made-for-TV band, The Monkees. Ever since the show first aired in 1966—nearly a year ago now—Julie has been crazy about the sparkly-eyed drummer with magnetic personality and fluffy brown curls. And when Julie gets the chance of a lifetime—to meet Micky Dolenz at an exclusive Malibu party—no one on earth is happier than she. It takes one magical evening full of dreams come true for Julie to make a surprising discovery about crushes, first love, and finding romance where she least expects it. Julie’s scheming and dreaming about her favorite celebrity will strike a chord with any girl who has ever pined after a hunky movie star or musician. Her decidedly 1960’s lifestyle will tickle the fancy of those who lived through that colorful decade or merely wished to. Her idol-worship of The Monkees will cause Monkees fans, young and old, to be swept into the whirlwind adventure of Julie’s dream come true. Author Alicia Voss’s own love of The Monkees inspired her to concoct a tantalizing tale sure to be enjoyed by many readers. “Deciding on the title was easy,” she says. “As many may know, there’s an episode of the Brady Bunch entitled ‘Getting Davy Jones’ and featuring the Monkee of the same name. In my opinion, Micky Dolenz, much as he is loved, is an underappreciated talent, not to mention a wonderfully memorable personality! For these reasons, it only made sense to write a story entitled ‘Getting Micky Dolenz!’” Alicia Voss has been an avid follower of the Monkees since she was thirteen—Julie’s age. She has been to Monkees concerts, written endless amounts of fan mail, received personalized autographs from Davy Jones and Peter Tork (she still needs Micky’s and Mike’s!), and has even had the privilege of meeting Davy Jones and Micky Dolenz, her two favorite Monkees at a concert she went to for her fifteenth birthday. She is probably the only person in the world who has made their own Monkees paper dolls (complete with an extensive wardrobe of hand-drawn psychedelic clothes), carved Davy Jones and Micky Dolenz jack-o-lanterns, and named a stuffed animal D.W. Washburn (after the Monkees’ song). The death of Davy Jones in February 2012 was admittedly a very difficult time for her, but she plans to keep him alive in her memory always. As for Micky Dolenz, it has long been one of Alicia’s biggest dreams to go to lunch with him. “Who knows?” says the young author. “Maybe someday it will come true! I’d also love it if he read ‘Getting Micky Dolenz’!” Short Story Press publishes short stories written by everyday writers.

It’s the heartbreaking account of his attempt at suicide, two stays in a mental hospital, and the memory-wiping electroshock therapy that saved his life. After his rehabilitation, Scharpling committed himself to reinvention through the world of comedy. In this book he will lift the curtain on the turmoil that still follows him, despite all of his accolades and achievements. In the vein of candid memoirs from comedians like Mike Birbiglia's Sleepwalk with Me and Norm Macdonald's Based on a True Story, It Never Ends is a revealing book by a beloved comedy icon.

Book excerpt: The “beautifully written” (The New York Times) autobiography of Michael Nesmith, from his star-making role on The Monkees and his invention of the music video to his critical contributions to movies, comedy, and the world of virtual reality “Reads like the chronicle of a relentless seeker.”—Los Angeles Times Michael Nesmith’s eclectic, electric life spanned his star-making role on The Monkees, his invention of the music video, and his critical contributions to movies, comedy, and the world of virtual reality. But above all, his is a seeker’s story, a pilgrimage in search of a set of principles to live by. That search took Nesmith from a childhood in Dallas to the set of The Monkees in Los Angeles to the heart of swinging London with John Lennon and Jimi Hendrix. This funny, thoughtful, self-aware book is a window into an unexpected life, inflected at every turn by the surprising candor and absurdist humor of an American original.

Today, Jimi Hendrix (1942–1970) is celebrated as the greatest rock guitarist of all time. Book excerpt: A “richly anecdotal” account of the secluded LA neighborhood’s legendary music scene, a tale of groupies, cocaine, and California dreaming (Salon). Finalist, SCBA Book Award for Nonfiction A Los Angeles Times Bestseller In the late sixties and early seventies, an impromptu collection of musicians colonized a eucalyptus-scented canyon deep in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles and melded folk, rock, and savvy American pop into a sound that conquered the world as thoroughly as the songs of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones had before them. Decades later, the music made in Laurel Canyon continues to pour from radios, earbuds, and concert stages around the world. In Laurel Canyon, veteran journalist Michael Walker draws on interviews with those who were there to tell the inside story of this unprecedented gathering of some of the era’s leading musical lights—including Joni Mitchell; Jim Morrison; Crosby, Stills, and Nash; John Mayall; the Mamas and the Papas; Carole King; the Eagles; and Frank Zappa, to name just a few—who turned Los Angeles into the music capital of the world and forever changed the way popular music is recorded, marketed, and consumed. “An exhaustively researched and richly anecdotal book that will fascinate both rock aficionados and cultural historians.” —Salon “Captures all the magic and lyricism of an almost mythological geographical spot in the history of pop music . . . the story of a more melodious time in rock and roll where the great talents of the ‘60s and ‘70s cloistered together in a sort of enchanted valley populated by an all-star cast of characters.” —Steven Gaines, author of Philistines at the Hedgerow

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How has a group conceived as a short-lived commodity outlived many more 'real' bands by nearly fifty years? Why are The Monkees still important, and what does this tell us about their music, their TV show, and our understanding of popular culture today? Despite being built in Hollywood, and not necessarily to last, that is precisely what their music, TV, and cinematic output has done. They in many ways unique--as the first 'made for TV' band, their success introduced methods of marketing pop that have since become standard industry practice; their 'big screen' use of film and images in live performance is likewise now a firmly established principle of concert staging; and in the way they changed the rules of the game, taking control over their own affairs at the height of the success, risking magnificent failure by doing so. The Monkees invented a new kind of TV, gave a new model to the music industry, and left behind one of the most enigmatic movies of the modern era, Head. This book is about all that and more. Beginning by exploring the origins and personalities of the four Monkees before looking in depth at their work together on screen, on stage, and on record, The Monkees, Head, and the 60s is the first serious study of the band and the first to fully acknowledge their importance to the development of pop as we now know it. “Jack Nicholson actually brought the book to my attention. Since neither of us are inclined to read books talking about ourselves - or for that matter about the movie world - I was surprised with this one. Peter Mills began as a musician, so his appreciation of The Monkees both as phenomenon and critic is well-founded. The Monkee history is astonishing. As for “Head”, no one has so thoughtfully elaborated on its meaning. The movie is elusive. But not to him or anyone who reads the book. And that includes me.” - Bob Rafelson (creator of The Monkees / director of “Head”)

The Monkees' immensely popular television series began in 1966. It was immediately followed by a remarkable four consecutive Number 1 albums and six Top 10 singles. In the 1980s the Monkees reached an entirely new audience when MTV began re-running the TV show. Their cult status remains solid today as critics reassess their music and new fans discover the show. Follow the band's short but explosive career in this examination that includes exclusive interviews with each member of the group, details of recording sessions, filming commitments, concert performances, other public appearances, and over 100 photographs and illustrations.
