Book excerpt: We will present results from a recently completed experiment (E02-019) at Jefferson Lab in which 6 GeV electrons were scattered from a series of both light and heavy nuclei at high momentum transfers. The scattered electrons were detected in the High Momentum Spectrometer in Hall C at angles between 18 and 50 degrees and with momenta between 2 and 5 GeV. This experiment extends the kinematic coverage of inclusive electron-nucleus scattering at high momentum transfer to large Bjorken x, forbidden for the free nucleon. These new data present the opportunity to the investigate the transition from a regime where the cross sections are dominated by quasielastic scattering and where nucleon degrees of freedom hold sway, to one where the reaction is deep inelastic in nature and described by the more fundamental quarks and gluons. A brief description of the experiment will be followed by a presentation of the preliminary data along with a discussion of the scaling behavior of the data.

Book excerpt: The impulse approximation (IA) predicts that momentum distributions, n/sub k/, in many-body systems should be measurable by inclusive quasielastic scattering at high energy and momentum (w, Q) transfer. The observations that the cross section appears to satisfy ''Y-scaling'' (i.e., is a function not of both w and Q of a single variable, Y) is usually taken as a signature of the IA. In nuclear physics, inelastic electron scattering at GeV energies should reveal the high momentum components of the nuclear wave function. In quantum fluids, neutron scattering at hundreds of MeV energies should measure the Bose condensate in superfluid 4He and the Fermi surface discontinuity and depletion of the Fermi sea in 3He. In molecular and condensed matter systems, X-ray Compton scattering at keV energies reveals electronic n/sub k/. Such experiments test many-body wave functions calculated by methods such as Green Function and Path Integral Monte Carlo, and Fermi Hypernetted Chain. However, an outstanding issue has been the corrections to the IA due to the scattering of the recoiling particle from neighboring particles, which are termed ''final state effects'' (FSE). The FSE should be especially important in nuclei and quantum fluids where the potentials have steeply repulsive cores. While there have been a variety of theories proposed for FSE, until now none has been adequately tested by experiment. Recently, the ''hard core perturbation theory'' (HCPT) for FSE in quantum fluids by Silver has been successfully compared to new neutron scattering measurements on 4He by P.E. Sokol and colleagues. In this paper, we shall discuss the lessons of this success for the extraction of n/sub k/ in nuclei by inclusive ''quasielastic electron-nucleus scattering'' (QENS). 19 refs., 12 figs.

Book excerpt: Coulomb Sum Rule states that the integration of the longitudinal response of a nucleus over the range of energy excitation dominated by quasi-elastic proton knock-out process should be equal to the total number of protons in the nucleus. The test of Coulomb Sum Rule will shed light on the question of whether or not the properties of nucleon are modified in the nuclear medium. In order to test the Coulomb Sum Rule in nuclei, a precision measurement of inclusive electron scattering cross sections in the quasi-elastic region was performed at Jefferson Lab. Incident electrons with energies ranging from 0.4 GeV to 4 GeV scattered from 4He, 12C, 56Fe and 208Pb nuclei at four scattering angles ( 15°, 60°, 90°, 120°) and scattered energies ranging from 0.1 GeV to 4 GeV. The Rosenbluth method with proper coulomb corrections is used to extract the transverse and longitudinal response functions at three-momentum transfers in the range 0.55 GeV/c ≤ |q| ≤ 1.0 GeV/c. The Coulomb Sum Rule is determined in the same |q| range and compared to predictions. This work is supported by the Department Of Energy through grant DE-FG02-94ER40844.

They find that the consistent inclusion of the binding effects, in particular the ones arising from the short-range nucleon-nucleon interaction, allows to describe the data in the region of x> 0.15 where binding fully accounts for the deviation of the cross section ratios from one.

Book excerpt: The description of nuclei at distances on the order of a fermi or less poses a difficult challenge for theoretical physicists. At larger distances the traditional description of the nucleus as a collection of interacting nucleons has been quite successful and substantial progress has been made in recent years in describing few-nucleon systems using this approach. However, it has been known for several decades that the nucleons themselves are composite objects which are believed to be described by Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). QCD is a complicated nonlinear strongly interacting field theory which can only be used for calculation in special circumstances. Due to the property of asymptotic freedom exhibited by QCD, perturbative calculations of QCD can be made at large momentum transfers and have achieved substantial success for a variety of processes. Understanding the transition from traditional pictures of nuclei to QCD is a substantial challenge. As an example of this problem, this paper describes recent calculations of elastic electron-deuteron scattering based on a relativistic extension of the traditional nuclear physics approach. The results of this work are compared to new data obtained at the Thomas Jefferson National Laboratory and to the predictions of perturbative QCD.
