Book Synopsis Short Pulse Electric CO2 Laser Research by : G. S. Janes
Download or read book Short Pulse Electric CO2 Laser Research written by G. S. Janes and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical model was developed for the CO2 laser operating in a short pumping time, gain switched, mode-locked mode of operation. This model predicted the performance of a nanosecond E-beam ionizer-sustainer laser oscillator. Additional investigations showed the possibility of providing high energy nanosecond pulses from a CO2 laser MOPA chain and predicted output energies presently achievable with devices in existence and under construction. Modifications were designed and incorporated to an existing AERL E-beam ionizer-sustainer laser and demonstrated the capability of operating the device in a gain switched mode. Further investigations and experiments under other contracts and with internal funding are in process to achieve 0.1 - 1.0 joule pulses in one nanosecond as well as amplification experiments once this output is achieved.

Book excerpt: The CO2-laser technology may be considered the most advanced in the laser field. Research has been stimulated strongly because of its high potential for many scientific and industrial applications. This book is primarily devoted to the main, more established developments of the CO2-laser. Advances in continuous systems, pulsed systems, mode-locked pulses, and the amplification of short pulses are dealt with in detail. This is done by giving an extensive treatment of relevant molecular physics, gas kinetics, excitation and relaxation processes, and laser physics pertinent to CO2. It also provides a thorough theoretical background of specific technologies used in various devices. Many numerical values of physical constants and accurate spectroscopic data of CO2 isotopes are included.

Book Synopsis High-energy, Short-pulse, Carbon-dioxide Lasers by :
Download or read book High-energy, Short-pulse, Carbon-dioxide Lasers written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lasers for fusion application represent a special class of short-pulse generators; not only must they generate extremely short temporal pulses of high quality, but they must do this at ultra-high powers and satisfy other stringent requirements by this application. This paper presents the status of the research and development of carbon-dioxide laser systems at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, vis-a-vis the fusion requirements.
Book Synopsis Optically Induced Hot Electron Effects in Semiconductors by : Arthur L. Smirl
Download or read book Optically Induced Hot Electron Effects in Semiconductors written by Arthur L. Smirl and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress is reported in using the high electric fields and the ultrashort pulses that can be derived from Nd:glass and CO2 lasers to investigate hot electron effects in semiconductors. This research is directed toward obtaining fundamental information concerning the saturable optical transmission properties and hot electron dynamics of semiconductors on a picosecond time scale and the stress and electric field biasing of the absorption properties of semiconductors under intense short pulse CO2 laser radiation.

Book Synopsis Short-pulse CO2-laser Damage Studies of NaCl and KCl Windows by :
Download or read book Short-pulse CO2-laser Damage Studies of NaCl and KCl Windows written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The damage resistance of bare surfaces and the bulk interior of NaCl and KCl windows was measured with a short-pulse CO2 laser at 10.6 .mu.m. Parametric studies with 1.7-ns pulses indicated that adsorbed water was probably the limiting agent on surface thresholds in agreement with previous studies at long pulsewidths. Rear-surface thresholds up to 7 J/cm2 were measured for polished NaCl windows, whereas KCl surfaces damaged at approximately 60% of this level. The breakdown electric-field thresholds of exit surfaces were only 50% of the value of the bulk materials. The pulsewidth dependence of surface damage from 1 to 65 ns, in terms of incident laser fluence, increased as t13.

Book Synopsis CO2 Lasers Effects and Applications by : W Duley
Download or read book CO2 Lasers Effects and Applications written by W Duley and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CO2 Lasers: Effects and Applications examines and summarizes the important applications of the device in different areas of study like physics, chemistry, and engineering. In some parts of the book, the reader is assumed to be knowledgeable in university level mathematics or some specialized area in physics or chemistry. The book consists of 10 chapters where the first two establish the general concepts on lasers and CO2 lasers, respectively. Chapter 3 takes the reader further and presents a comprehensive review of optical components for use such as detectors, windows, and mirrors. Because the CO2 laser is mostly used as a heat source, the theory of laser-surface heating is relevant in the discussion. This theory is presented in Chapter 4. Chapters 5 and 6 meanwhile present a summary of observations on cutting, welding, and some related topics. The following chapters discuss the different applications of CO2 lasers in different areas and processes. Some of these applications include in the generation of thermal effect, laser deposition of thin films, spectroscopy, laser photochemistry, and meteorology and communication systems. The text is a good source of reference to both students and scientists in the areas of physics, chemistry, and engineering.
