Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shore Process and Shoreline Development The magnitude of the task proved to be greater than antici pated, partly because of the wide divergence of expert Opinion regarding the manner in which shore processes Operate, and partly because of the great volume and scattered distribution of the writings dealing with the subject. It was, indeed, the desire to relieve others who might have occasion to study shore processes and shoreline forms, of the burden of duplicating the work involved in my undertaking which first suggested to me the desirability of placing on record, in compact form for their use, the results of my enquiry, even where these results did not relate to the.original problem of coastal subsidence. The present volume is the con crete product of this desire to render a service to my fellow students. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Mitigating Shore Erosion Along Sheltered Coasts by : National Research Council
Download or read book Mitigating Shore Erosion Along Sheltered Coasts written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-05-04 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like ocean beaches, sheltered coastal areas experience land loss from erosion and sea level rise. In response, property owners often install hard structures such as bulkheads as a way to prevent further erosion, but these structures cause changes in the coastal environment that alter landscapes, reduce public access and recreational opportunities, diminish natural habitats, and harm species that depend on these habitats for shelter and food. Mitigating Shore Erosion Along Sheltered Coasts recommends coastal planning efforts and permitting policies to encourage landowners to use erosion control alternatives that help retain the natural features of coastal shorelines.

Book Synopsis The History of the Study of Landforms by : Richard J. Chorley
Download or read book The History of the Study of Landforms written by Richard J. Chorley and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 1964 with total page 1068 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the fourth volume in the definitive series, The History of the Study of Landforms or The Development of Geomorphology. Volume 1 (1964) dealt with contributions to the field up to 1890. Volume 2 (1973) dealt with the concepts and contributions of William Morris Davis. Volume 3 (1991) covered historical and regional themes during the 'classic' period of geomorphology, between 1980 and 1950. This volume concentrates on studies of geomorphological processes and Quaternary geomorphology, carrying on these themes into the second part of the twentieth century, since when process-based studies have become so dominant. It is divided into five sections. After chapters dealing with geological controls, there are three sections dealing with process and form: fluvial, glacial and other process domains. The final section covers the mid-century revolution, anticipating the onset of quantitative studies and dating techniques. The volume's objective is to describe and analyse many of the developments that provide a foundation for the rich and varied subject matter of contemporary geomorphology. The volume is in part a celebration of the late Professor Richard Chorley, who devised its structure and contributed a chapter.
