Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been written for readers with an interest in Bantu linguistics for which Shona is an examplar. It mainly discusses issues of Bantu morphology, syntax and semantics. Heard-driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG), the theory of analysis employed in this book has made it possible to offer an analysis of Shona grammar, exposing the interface relations that obtain from causative constructions. The book provides insights into causativisation as a lexical phenomenon, tracing the developments in the study of causatives universally and locating where Shona stands as far as the study of causative constructions is concerned. The book has a unique approach to Bantu grammar, blended within the theoretical prowess of the non-transformational HPSG as a linguistic formalism. The book provides a platform for researchers with interest in interface relations, particularly the syntax-semantics interface that obtain from complex predicates, to which causative constructions belong.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inexorable march of theoretical linguistics has tended to downplay the importance of description of linguistic data or corpus. The atomic view of the phoneme and the morpheme as segments facilitates description of structures of individual languages. Compare us with portrait artists who look closely at their subjects' faces and begin by sketching out features before filling in the details. The scope of this sketch means that there is no room for much detail, but sufficient grammatical features to identify the language's structure. We believe that description should always come before theory. We have been intrigued by young linguists introducing presentations of their papers at conferences with phrases like "my theory is..." and proceed to focus on recalcitrant data. This book aims to achieve the opposite. The other aim of the book is to sketch out an overview of the STRUCTURE of Shona, drawing attention to some of the aspects that continue to be in need of further detailed DESCRIPTION. This, we believe, will contribute to some of the "theories" in particular as well as linguistic theory in general being more grounded on concrete facts of language.

Book excerpt: This book explores children s acquisition of Shona morphology, in particular the acquisition of grammatical morphemes. The book describes how the morphology of Shona-speaking children develops. Of key interest is how they acquire inflections and the strategies they adopt. The findings of this study show that nouns and verbs are first produced in the form of content words without the grammatical morphemes (GMs) then they occur with a vowel that is part of the target GM. The final stage of the development of GMs is when children produce words that are similar to adult words. There is evidence of overgeneralisation of the plural morpheme (ma-). This book also reveals the order of acquisition of some GMs. A noteworthy feature of the children s speech is the number of productive GMs that they could handle. The findings in this book contribute to the areas of morphology and child language acquisition of Bantu languages in general and of Shona in particular. The data that are gathered in this book could also be used in studies of other aspects of the acquisition of Shona such as that of syntax.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This landmark volume is the first work specifically designed to explore the extent to which striking surface morpho-syntactic similarities between Bantu and Romance languages actually represent similar syntactic structures. In particular, it explores the timely and much debated issues of verbal morphology and agreement, the structure of DPs, and word order/information structure, with the goal of providing a better understanding of the structure of the different languages investigated, and the implications this holds for syntactic theory more generally. All of the papers draw on data from both Bantu and Romance languages, providing a framework for much-needed further comparative research on the nature of linguistic structure, its diversity and constraints, and the implications this has for learnability/acquisition. The volume also provides an important precedent for incorporating insights from Bantu linguistic structure into mainstream of syntax research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wm. E. Welmers surveys a wide range of structural characteristics, both phonological and grammatical, of the languages of sub-Saharan Africa. Drawing on thirty years of experience in the analysis and teaching of African languages, and on work done on some seventy spoken languages, Welmers has organized the volume by linguistic topic. Thus there are extensive discussions of tonal systems in languages from all over sub-Saharan Africa, of noun classes and concord in the Bantu and other Niger-Kordofanian languages, and of the varieties of verbal constructions found in representative languages. African Language Structures emphasizes the organization of language data rather than the technicalities of theoretical linguistics. The material is presented in such a way that students working on the analysis of other languages can be guided in their procedures; Welmers suggests not only what types of structures may be expected, but also how they may be discovered and described. This work is unique in the depth of its linguistic insight over the entire spectrum of language structure and in the breadth of its language coverage.
