Book excerpt: Newly reissued, this book is still regarded as one of the best synthesis of ethnographic research undertaken amongst the Shona people, taking indigenous religion and culture as a starting point. The author, a renowned anthropologist and sociologist of Zimbabwe, examines the historical background and sources of Shona history from the fifteenth century. He details, from anthropological perspectives, kinship and village organisation including patrilineal kinship, Shona marriage and the position of women in Shona society. The author explores the subsistence and cash economies of the Shona peoples, their contribution to commercial farming, their use of land, and their function as a migrant labour force. Further sections focus on chiefship, courts; and interpretations of sickness, personal misfortune, witchcraft, death and the afterlife. The final sections of the book consider the functions of traditional religion at family and tribal levels; the interface between traditional and new religions; and rural and urban influences, amongst the Shona people.

Download or read book Indigenous Shona Philosophy written by Mungwini, Pascah and published by NISC (Pty) Ltd. This book was released on 2019-04-15 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of the most provocative questions confronting philosophers in Africa are grounded in the historical memory of conquest and the peripheralisation the continent. Mungwini offers a critical reconstruction of indigenous Shona philosophy as an aspect of the African intellectual heritage held hostage by colonial modernity. In this comprehensive work, he lays bare the thoughts of the Shona, who are credited with the founding of the ancient Great Zimbabwe civilisation. Retracing the epistemic thread in the fabric of Shona culture and philosophy, he explores the assumptions that inform their thinking. The exchange of such knowledge is fundamental to the future of humanity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Shona culture is a book which interrogates the Shona people s culture. The book traces the origin of the Shona as a people and how they became to be known as the Shona. Two polemical views of the origin of the Shona people are proffered. The book takes an Afro-centric approach in its interrogation and interpretation of the Shona culture. In order for the readers to fully understand and appreciate the Shona culture, the book has explored topics on the Shona family, the Shona traditional beliefs, the Shona marriage and the Shona rites of passage. The book has abundantly shown, through its argument, that the Shona culture has changed over a period of time, discarding things which could not be adaptable to the foreign influence while its resilient nature has helped it to continue to be relevant in the present times.

Book Synopsis A Social History of the Shona Novel by : Emmanuel Chiwome
Download or read book A Social History of the Shona Novel written by Emmanuel Chiwome and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shona literature now comprises 85% of literature published for schools in Zimbabwe, an indication of its significance for the understanding of the philosophical and historical base of (the understanding of) a language, people and nation. Chiwome's book argues that the productivity of Shona fiction is inseparable from the dialects of history; first colonialism, then development, and exposes colonialist notions about Shona cultural values and the implications for reading and writing the literature. He analyses Shona writers' predilections for certain genres of fiction asking why colonialism did not produce historical/committed literature, and why moralistic and fantastical modes prevail. In the latter part of the book, he adopts Manichean and Fanonian psychoanalytic approaches to African fictional characters suffering inferiority and collective paranoia, and discusses how this relates to the aesthetic qualities of the literatures of decolonisation.

Book Synopsis Shona Women in Zimbabwe—A Purchased People? by : John Chitakure
Download or read book Shona Women in Zimbabwe—A Purchased People? written by John Chitakure and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-09-29 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The position and treatment of women in every religion, culture, and society have been subjects of concern for a long time. In every society, women fight for their emancipation from exploitive and oppressive patriarchal structures. The most contentious issues include domestic violence, gender discrimination and inequality in the areas of employment, leadership, and marriage. Domestic violence tops the list and is the worst enemy of any progressive and democratic society. It dehumanizes, disfigures, and demeans its victims and survivors. Shona Women in Zimbabwe--a Purchased People? explores the causes of domestic violence--the cultural practice of bridewealth, in particular--and assesses the extent to which it contributes to the proliferation of domestic violence among the Shona people of Zimbabwe. It then explores the Christian traditions, particularly, the Roman Catholic Church, in search of resources that can be used to emancipate Shona women from patriarchal subjugation. Finally, the book offers a pastoral response that is informed by the experiences of the Shona women, their cultural resources, and the Roman Catholic religious tradition.
Book Synopsis Shona Sentential Names: A Brief Overview by : Jacob Mapara
Download or read book Shona Sentential Names: A Brief Overview written by Jacob Mapara and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2013 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book draws on the case of the Shona and other Bantu people of Africa to argue that names are not mere identity tags. Names are an important cultural symbol of the people who give and bear them. The book challenges linguists and other social scientists to pay particular attention to the significance of names in the study of language use in society. Equally, it demonstrates the importance of names as part of the distinctive repertoire of Shona cultural heritage. Each Shona sentential name is a statement about that reality of being Shona. Carried in each name are sentiments that reflect on prevalent social, economic and political relations. The book focuses in particular on social names, religious names and war names inspired by such events as Zimbabwe's war of liberation.
