Book excerpt: "If the believers . . . establish, in a befitting manner, union and harmony with spirit, tongue, heart and body, suddenly they shall find 'Abdu'l-Bahá in their midst. 'Abdu'l-Bahá 'Abdu'l-Bahá in Their Midst is the story of the journeys of 'Abdu'l-Bahá to Europe and North America over the period 1911 to 1913. Rather than focusing on the public talks he gave, inspiring though these were, it narrates how 'Abdu'l-Bahá affected and transformed the lives of those he met, described in their own words. A revealing and heartwarming book."--Publisher's website.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among those who visit 'Akká, some have made great forward strides. Lightless candles, they were set alight; withered, they began to bloom; dead, they were recalled to life and went home with tidings of great joy. 'Abdu'l-Bahá . . .each pilgrim brings back information and suggestions of a most precious character, and it is the privilege of all the friends to share in the spiritual results of these visits. Shoghi Effendi This two-volume series on pilgrims who visited 'Abdu'l-Bahá in the Holy Land may be seen as a companion to 'Abdu'l-Bahá in Their Midst, about 'Abdu'l-Bahá's three-year journey (1910-1913) to Egypt, Europe and North America. The present volume covers the time from 1897 until the Master's departure on His journey to the West, while the second volume begins with His return to Haifa at the end of 1913 and covers the time until His passing in 1921. Virtually all pilgrims and many other visitors wrote down what 'Abdu'l-Bahá said, including many of His talks, both formal and informal. Their accounts provide a great wealth of stories that help illustrate who 'Abdu'l-Bahá was in the context of history and how he taught and interacted with others. Most of these accounts come from personal diaries and letters initially written in longhand, though many were later typed. They are to be considered 'pilgrims' notes', but are a fascinating and moving testimony to how 'Abdu'l-Bahá affected and transformed those He met, described in their own words. Book excerpt: The amazing stories of the Knights of Bahá'u'lláh, whose indomitable spirit, courage and steadfastness brought the Bahá'í message to countries where it was previously unknown. Why would a legal counsel with the rank of brigadier general in the Department of Defence go to a desolate island with just a few score inhabitants? Where it was so hot that he cooked his eggs on rocks on the beach and so isolated that the arrival of an eggplant on the tide was the cause of celebration? Why would a young doctor give up a potential job that included a nice house, servants, car and driver and a good salary, for a job paying just $25 a month in a place where the toilet was two boards placed over a stream full of water snakes? These and other stories of indomitable spirit, courage, steadfastness and self-abnegation are the subject of this book on the Knights of Bahá'u'lláh, those Bahá'ís who left their homes to bring the message of Bahá'u'lláh to countries and territories where it was unknown, and whose names are inscribed on Shoghi Effendi's Roll of Honour. They came from over two dozen countries scattered over the earth representing every continent; 131 of them were men and 126 women. The oldest left home at the age of 85, while the youngest was a youth no older than 14. They endured loneliness and made sacrifices, and in so doing experienced the greatest adventure of their lives.--Publisher's website.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baha'u'llah (1817-1892), the Inaugurator of the most recent of the independent world religions, the Baha'i Faith, has been described by the Guardian of that Faith as 'One Whom posterity will acclaim, and Whom innumerable followers already recognize, . . . as the Establisher of the Most Great Peace . . . and the Inspirer and Founder of a world civilization'. Few there are in the West who have known even one person who saw Him or experienced the majesty and power, the compassion, humility and humour which characterized His earthly life. Baha'is of the East are more fortunate, many having known those, often their relatives, who were in His presence as companions or pilgrims. Yet, as the editor of this book remarks, 'only a few recorded their observations for posterity'. It was in 1975 that 'the thought of collecting personal accounts' occurred to the Hand of the Cause 'Ali-Akbar Furutan. Through correspondence and the examination of numerous memoirs, published and in manuscript, he selected the stories in this enthralling collection. 'The day is approaching when God will have raised up a people who will call to remembrance Our days, ' wrote Baha'u'llah. The 144 stories in these pages make such remembrance both effortless and delightful. They come to mind whether one is far away or visiting the scenes in which they occurred. They describe Baha'u'llah in Iran, Baghdad, Constantinople, Adrianople, 'Akka and Bahji, and linger in memory to uplift and gladden both heart and mind.

It describes the unique spiritual destiny of America, its role in establishing the Most Great Peace and the crucial contribution that American Baháʼís have to make to that process. Shoghi Effendi explains that in order for the Baháʼís to make a lasting contribution and fulfill their destiny, they must exert themselves to manifest "moral rectitude," "absolute chastity," and "complete freedom from prejudice."

Book excerpt: What binds together Louis Riel’s former secretary, a railroad inventor, a Montreal comedienne, an early proponent of Canada’s juvenile system and a prominent Canadian architect? Socialists, suffragists, musicians, artists—from 1898 to 1948, these and some 550 other individual Canadian Bahá’ís helped create a movement described as the second most widespread religion in the world. Using diaries, memoirs, official reports, private correspondence, newspapers, archives and interviews, Will C. van den Hoonaard has created the first historical account of Bahá’ís in Canada. In addition, The Origins of the Bahá’í Community of Canada, 1898-1948 clearly depicts the dynamics and the struggles of a new religion in a new country. This is a story of modern spiritual heroes—people who changed the lives of others through their devotion to the Bahá’í ideals, in particular to the belief that the earth is one country and all of humankind are its citizens. Thirty-nine original photographs effectively depict persons and events influencing the growth of the Bahá’í movement in Canada. The Origins of the Bahá’í Community of Canada, 1898-1948 makes an original contribution to religious history in Canada and provides a major sociological reference tool, as well as a narrative history that can be used by scholars and Bahá’ís alike for many years to come.

Book excerpt: "Anyone looking at the condition of the world today will be struck by the dramatic changes taking place. On the one hand is the visible deterioration in so many fundamental processes and institutions, from the financial world, politics and the fabric of society to climate change and energy. On the other is an enlivening upsurge in knowledge, in concern for human rights and in technologies that bring people together. These energies are spiritual in nature and result from the coming of God's most recent representative to humankind, Bahá'u'lláh. He has set in motion processes that are creating a new, divine civilization. In response to this, negative forces have risen to resist the divine purpose. The nature of these spiritual forces is a prominent theme in the Bahá'í writings, particularly in those of Shoghi Effendi. They convey vital principles and laws, systematic processes and insights into the workings of the world. They explain the changes that are taking place and give us a glimpse into our own nature and reality. In this book Hooper Dunbar examines the character of the spiritual forces as set out in writings of Shoghi Effendi. The first part considers the terms 'force', 'energy' and 'power' in these writings, while the second comprises a selection of quotations drawn from the writings of Shoghi Effendi - many published here for the first time - arranged chronologically, so readers may consider the ideas in their original context."--Publisher's website

Those who encountered Him recognized a character of matchless virtue, an all-embracing love and altruism, extraordinary spiritual acuity, and super-human knowledge. Through His personal care for the poor and vulnerable in society, His participation in the discourses of the age, His Writings and His promotion of the Bahá'í Teachings, 'Abdu'l-Bahá was the living embodiment of the Covenant of Bahá'u'lláh, tasked with propagating and preserving the unity of an emerging global religion. As people around the world mark the centenary of 'Abdu'l-Bahá's passing and the completion of the first century of the Formative Age of the Bahá'í Faith, this anthology is designed to increase devotion to 'Abdu'l-Bahá and aid profound reflection on His life, His mission and His unique qualities. Preserved in the testimonials and tributes collected here are the exemplary actions of that single soul out of all humankind who offered a pattern of right living to all people, for all time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Decisive Hour is a collection of letters and cablegrams from Shoghi Effendi to the North American Bahá'í community sent between 1932 and 1946. It was originally published under the title Messages to America. As with Citadel of Faith the collection gives insight into the crises and victories faced by the American believers in the period covered by the letters, through the lens of guidance provided by the Guardian, and its value lies not only in the glimpse it gives into history but in the perspective it provides on the present, and the applicability of the principles identified to the issues of the current time.
