Book excerpt: Experiments are conducted in a free piston shock tunnel to determine the effects of thermochemistry on the interaction of a weak oblique shock with the strong bow shock ahead of a blunt body in supersonic flow at high enthalpy. The flow topology is simplified by studying the nominally two-dimensional flow about a cylinder with a coplanar impinging shock wave. High resolution holographic interferometry is used to investigate changes in the flow structure as the location of the impinging shock wave is varied.

Book excerpt: The interaction of a weak oblique shock with the strong bow shock ahead of a blunt body in supersonic flow produces extreme heat transfer rates and surface pressures. Although the problem has been studied extensively in low enthalpy flows, the influences of high enthalpy real gas effects are poorly understood. Existing perfect gas models predict greatly increased heating with increasing Mach number and decreasing ratio of specific heats. Experiments are conducted in a free piston shock tunnel to determine the effects of thermochemistry on the problem at high enthalpy. The flow topology is simplified by studying the nominally two dimensional flow about a cylinder with a coplanar impinging shock wave. High resolution holographic interferometry is used to investigate changes in the flow structure as the location of the impinging shock wave is varied. Fast response heat transfer gauges provide time resolved measurements of the model surface temperature. The data that are obtained do not support the existing predictions of greatly increased heat transfer at high enthalpy. A model is developed to study the thermochemical processes occurring in the interaction region. The phenomenon arises because the stagnation streamline is forced to pass through a system of oblique shock waves that produce less entropy than the undisturbed bow shock. Peak heating is shown to result from a balancing of the strengths of the oblique shock waves. This condition is demonstrated to simultaneously minimize the influence of thermochemistry on the flow. Real gas effects are shown to become important at lower Mach numbers (

Book excerpt: The impingement of shock waves on blunt bodies in steady supersonic flow is known to cause extremely high local heat transfer rates and surface pressures. Although these problems have been studied in cold hypersonic flow, the effects of dissociative relaxation processes are unknown. In this paper we report a model aimed at determining the boundaries of the possible interaction regimes for an ideal dissociating gas. Local analysis about shock wave intersection points in the pressure-flow deflection angle plane with continuation of singular solutions is the fundamental tool employed. Further, we discuss an experimental investigation of the nominally two-dimensional mean flow that results from the impingement of an oblique shock wave on the, leading edge of a cylinder. The effects of variations in shock impingement geometry were visualized using differential interferometry. Generally, real gas effects are seen to increase the range of shock impingement points for which enhanced heating occurs. They also reduce the type 4 interaction supersonic jet width and influence the type 2-3 transition process. Shock-on-shock interaction, Shock impingement, Hypervelocity flow, Dissociation, Relaxation, Heat transfer.

Book excerpt: Significant progress was made during the second year of an interdisciplinary experimental, numerical and theoretical program to extend the state of knowledge and understanding of the effects of chemical reactions in hypervelocity flows. The program addressed key problems in naerothermochemistry that arise from interactions between the three strongly nonlinear effects: Compressibility; vorticity; and chemistry. Important new results included: Clear understanding of the two important parameters that define hypervelocity flow over spheres. Closed-form solution for stand-off distance. Completion of computation of hollow-core compressible vortex streets. First high-resolution interferograms of shock-shock interaction in hypervelocity flow. Detailed experimental and theoretical study shows that high-enthalpy real-gas effects do not further increase heat flux in type IV Interaction. Interferograms establish flow quality in the hypervelocity shock tunnel T5. Upgrade of the Supersonic Shear Layer facility to higher Mach number. New results on supersonic shear layers and shear-layer/shock-wave interaction. Computational discovery of a flow field that is sensitive to vibration-dissociation coupling. Extension of the equilibrium flux method to a more robust less dissipative form and tests. Computation of collision cross section to electrons of low excited states of OH, NO, and CO2. Establishment of Laser-Induced Thermal Acoustics as an accurate diagnostic for gas properties over large pressure ranges. (AN).

Book excerpt: Experiments with extensive numerical simulations were conducted examining effects of low density flows and real gas effects on aerothermal characteristics of flows in hypervelocity facilities and in simple and complex flowfields in hypervelocity flows. These studies demonstrated that in the absence of real gas effects the DSMC and Navier-Stokes solutions accounting for slip effects were in excellent agreement with measurements. An extensive series of calibration and validation studies were done defining the free stream flows in the LENS I and X tunnels for low density and high enthalpy flows at velocities up to 16,000 ft/s. Measurements on double cone configuration showed that above 13,000 ft/s the interaction regions differed significantly in nitrogen and air flows; while the computations agreed with the measurements in nitrogen, they differed significantly in the size and properties of interaction regions in air. With the shuttle configuration, we demonstrated that real gas effects decrease the size of a separated interaction region over the flap, reduce the pressure over the adjacent curved surfaces, and reduce Reynolds number for onset of boundary layer transition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shock wave-boundary-layer interaction (SBLI) is a fundamental phenomenon in gas dynamics that is observed in many practical situations, ranging from transonic aircraft wings to hypersonic vehicles and engines. SBLIs have the potential to pose serious problems in a flowfield; hence they often prove to be a critical - or even design limiting - issue for many aerospace applications. This is the first book devoted solely to a comprehensive, state-of-the-art explanation of this phenomenon. It includes a description of the basic fluid mechanics of SBLIs plus contributions from leading international experts who share their insight into their physics and the impact they have in practical flow situations. This book is for practitioners and graduate students in aerodynamics who wish to familiarize themselves with all aspects of SBLI flows. It is a valuable resource for specialists because it compiles experimental, computational and theoretical knowledge in one place.

Flow-field density gradient and surface pressure and heating define the type of interference pattern and corresponding perturbations. The maximum pressure and heat transfer level and location of various interaction types are presented. A time-accurate solution of the Type IV interference is employed to demonstrate the establishment and the steadiness of the low-density flow interaction.

Book excerpt: This book presents experimental and numerical findings on reducing shock-induced separation by applying transition upstream the shock wave. The purpose is to find out how close to the shock wave the transition should be located in order to obtain favorable turbulent boundary layer interaction. The book shares findings obtained using advanced flow measurement methods and concerning e.g. the transition location, boundary layer characteristics, and the detection of shock wave configurations. It includes a number of experimental case studies and CFD simulations that offer valuable insights into the flow structure. It covers RANS/URANS methods for the experimental test section design, as well as more advanced techniques, such as LES, hybrid methods and DNS for studying the transition and shock wave interaction in detail. The experimental and numerical investigations presented here were conducted by sixteen different partners in the context of the TFAST Project. The general focus is on determining if and how it is possible to improve flow performance in comparison to laminar interaction. The book mainly addresses academics and professionals whose work involves the aerodynamics of internal and external flows, as well as experimentalists working with compressible flows. It will also be of benefit for CFD developers and users, and for students of aviation and propulsion systems alike.

They are the forum at which scientists concerned with shock waves present their research. They USE shock waves for chemical kinetics studies, for materials studies, and smashing kidney stones; they STUDY the phenomena associated with flows involving shock waves, such as supersonic flow, explosions, detonations, volcanic eruptions, and, in this symposium, even such with-it topics as impact of Shoemaker-Levy on Jupiter and blast waves in the World Trade Center. They also discover new, bigger and better ways of generating flows at hypervelocity speeds and develop their technological tools further. The international exchange of information is documented in the proceedings volumes, which have become a storehouse of information on the subject, documenting the history of this peculiar branch of science that involves chemists, physicists, engineers, geophysicists, material scientists and biologists.
