Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lorenz Hart, together with Richard Rodgers, created some of the most beautiful and witty songs ever written. Here is the story of the strikingly unromantic life of this songwriting genius. His lyrics spin with brilliance and sophistication, yet at their core is an unmistakable wistfulness. Rodgers and Hart, who wrote approximately thirty Broadway musicals and dozens of songs for Hollywood films, were an odd couple. Rodgers was precise, punctual, heterosexual, handsome, and eager to be accepted by society. Hart was barely five feet tall, alcoholic, homosexual, and more comfortable in a bar or restaurant than anywhere else. His lyrics are all the more remarkable considering that he never sustained a romantic relationship, living his entire life with his mother, who died only months before his own death at 48. Biographer Marmorstein superbly portrays the life of this exuberant yet troubled artist.--From publisher description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fully illustrated guide to rigging models of historic ships with confidence and accuracy, using a model of the eighteenth-century HMS Melampus. The rigging of period ship models is the ultimate challenge for any modeler. An eighteenth-century man-of-war boasted mile on mile of rigging, more than one thousand blocks, and acres of canvas. To reduce this in scale, and yet retain an accurate representation, is an awesome undertaking. In this classic work, Lennarth Peterson untangles the complexities of model rigging. Using some four hundred drawings, he shows how each separate item of rigging is fitted to the masts, yards, and sails. Each drawing deals with only one particular item so that it can be seen clearly in isolation. The lead of a particular halyard, the arrangement of a bracing line—these and every other detail are depicted with startling clarity. Based on the author’s research of numerous eighteenth-century models, each one with its contemporary rigging still extant, the information is both meticulous and accurate. The remarkable visual immediacy and clarity of this work makes it truly unique and essential for any period ship modeler. In addition, the book is a “must-have” reference work for all those involved in the rigging and repair of historic ships.

Book excerpt: Numerous successful reprints of contemporary works on rigging and seamanship indicate the breadth of interest in the lost art of handling square-rigged ships. Modelmakers, marine painters and enthusiasts need to know not only how the ships were rigged but how much sail was set in each condition of wind and sea, how the various manoeuvres were carried out, and the intricacies of operations like reefing sails or 'catting' an anchor. Contemporary treatises such as Brady's Kedge Anchor in the USA or Darcy Lever's Sheet Anchor in Britain tell only half the story, for they were training manuals intended to be used at sea in conjunction with practical experiences and often only cover officially-condoned practices. This book, on the other hand, is a modern, objective appraisal of the evidence, concerned with the actualities as much as the theory. The author's facility in a remarkable range of languages has allowed him to study virtually every manual published over a period of nearly four centuries. This gives the book a completely international balance and allows the author to describe for the first time the proper historical development of seamanship among the major navies of the world.

Book excerpt: When June Kellet was only 15 she fell in love with a young naval officer and over the next four years they were to live their lives through letters and brief stays, when John had leave ashore. The letters, now held in the archives of the Cairn Library of the National Maritime Museum are considered by the then Curator of Manuscripts as being, ' - very important - to naval historians - they stand, still, as our most important collection from the mid-twentieth century.' In this journal June Towers shares with us some of the letters which portray the lives of two young people - a junior naval officer and a schoolgirl of 16 years of age - their every day lives, family and friends, dreams, hope and above all love. The letters contained within the book start in October of 1946 and cover a period of four years - the final entry being 29th November 1950. They married in April 1950 but married life was short lived as tragedy hit a year later, the day after their first wedding anniversary. June was 20 years old. There has been much debate about the submarine the HMS Affray - still considered to be one of the Royal Navy's worst peacetime disasters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of Admiral Horatio Nelson has been written from every possible angle, but this was not so with his ships. Not until this work was first published in 1955. Before then, such information as there was about the ships was buried in archives on Naval Architecture; only the top expert could have sifted it and present it in a usable form. Dr. Longridge was that expert, and his work became a veritable treasure trove for every naval historian and ship modeller. His research is supported by 271 detailed line drawings, rare photographs and fold-out plans showing hull framing, interior construction, complexing and deck layouts.
