Book Synopsis Art of the Amistad and The Portrait of Cinqué by : Laura A. Macaluso
Download or read book Art of the Amistad and The Portrait of Cinqué written by Laura A. Macaluso and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-03-23 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Amistad incident, one of the few successful ship revolts in the history of enslavement, has been discussed by historians for decades, even becoming the subject of a Steven Spielberg film in 1997, which brought the story to wide audiences. But, while historians have examined the Amistad case for its role in the long history of the Atlantic, the United States and slavery, there is an oil on canvas painting of one man, Cinqué, at the center of this story, an image so crucial to the continual retelling and memorialization of the Amistad story, it is difficult to think about the Amistad and not think of this image. Visual and material culture about the Amistad in the form of paintings, prints, monuments, memorials, museum exhibits, quilts and banners, began production in the late summer of 1839 and has not yet ceased. Art of the Amistad and The Portrait of Cinqué is the first book to survey in total these Amistad inspired images and related objects, and to find in them shared ideals and cultural creations, but also divergent applications of the story based on intended audience and local context. Tracing the revolutionary creation of what art historian Stephen Eisenman calls “a highly individualized, noble portrait of an African man,” Art of the Amistad and The Portrait of Cinqué is built around visual and material culture, and thus does not use images merely as illustration, but tells its story through the wide range of images and materials presented. While the Portrait of Cinqué seems to sit quietly behind Plexiglass at a local history museum, the impact of this 175-year old painting is palpable; very few portraits from the 19th century—let alone a portrait of a black man—remain a relevant part of culture as the Portrait of Cinqué continues to be today. Art of the Amistad the Portrait of Cinqué is about the art and artifacts that continue to inform and inspire our understanding of transatlantic history—a journey 175 years in the making.

In American Waters reveals that marine painting is so much more than ship portraits. Book Synopsis Frank Vining Smith by : James A. Craig
Download or read book Frank Vining Smith written by James A. Craig and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Frank Vining Smith (1879-1967), the nineteenth-century clipper ship, like the cathedral of the Middle Ages, was one of men's most glorious accomplishments. As Monet had done with the cathedral, Smith painted the ship, featuring it in different angles and at different times of the day. Having studied under the supervision of Frank W. Benson, and Edmund Tarbell at the Museum School in Boston, Smith brought a new approach to the conservative art of marine painting. When looking at a painting by Smith, one does not see the blueprint of detail that was common in ship painting at the turn of the century, instead one sees masses of shadows and the suggestion of details. Up close, it is difficult to see where one brush-stroke ends and another begins, but seen from a distance, his compositions work perfectly, and is what contributor Peter Williams calls "the alchemy of Smith's impressionism". AUTHOR: James A. Craig is a curator and lecturer specializing in nineteenth-century American marine art. SELLING POINTS: *Definitive exploration of the art and life of this prolific Massachusetts artist's 70 year career *Of interest to museums, universities, yacht clubs, yachting enthusiasts, and antique collectors *Vining Smith's work is in collections across the United States including in navy wardrooms, and he counted former President Franklin Delano Roosevelt as one of his loyal patrons ILLUSTRATIONS: 93 colour & 72 b/w

Book Synopsis Sargent and the Sea by : John Singer Sargent
Download or read book Sargent and the Sea written by John Singer Sargent and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ships and the sea through the eyes of one of the most remarkable painters of the early 20th century As a young man the American painter John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) was passionate about the sea and deeply knowledgeable about ships and seafaring. Between the ages of 18 and 23 he started his career as a professional painter with a remarkable range of maritime works that form the subject of this exhibition and book. The key works are the two versions of the Oyster Gatherers of Cancale, painted in 1878 on the northern coast of Brittany in France, and the group of studies and sketches around them. The authors relate Sargent's freely handled marine drawings, large and small, to his watercolors, oil sketches, and finished oil paintings of marine subjects. The works demonstrate his transition from a plein-air painter to a tonalist exploring interiors and urban scenes. Also presented is a unique scrapbook, held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, that includes more than 50 drawings and sketches, mostly of sea scenes, and postcards and commercial photography of works of art, architecture, and tourist views. This scrapbook provides an intimate glimpse at the thoughts and experiences of the young artist on his first European voyage. Exhibition Schedule: Corcoran Gallery, Washington (9/12/09 - 1/3/10) The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (2/14/10 - 5/23/10) Royal Academy of Arts, London (7/10/10 - 9/23/10)

Download or read book Fitz H. Lane written by James A. Craig and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2006-08-01 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fitz H. Lanes maritime masterpieces are known throughout the world, but the man himself has eluded both historians and art critics for over a century. The Luminist painters successful career began in his early childhood in picturesque Gloucester, Massachusetts and his talents developed and matured over time, making him one of the nations premier nineteenth-century artists. Throughout his career, Lane painted with a vitality and attention to detail that was purely American at heart, and it is in pursuit of this ideal that James Craig embarks on a detectives investigation to reconstruct with accuracy and honesty the details of a man about whom much has been written but little revealed. Few clues remain today about the artist who so thoroughly embodied the American spirit during one of humanitys most dramatic and confusing historical epochs. Lanes era was one of great change for America, and both he and his art were there to capture that spirit. This dazzling and exhaustive effort provides the first glimpse behind the canvas, beyond the career and into the soul of Fitz H. Lane. Passionate, stunning and thrilling, this is a narrative that returns life and color to a man intent or preserving and presenting the life of the culture he loved. James Craig has given Gloucester back one of her favorite sons.
