This book was released on 2009-04-29 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the second book based on comparative and comprehensive data from the 2003 representative European Union Company survey of Operating hours, Working times and Employment (EUCOWE) in France, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and the United Kingdom. The EUCOWE project is the first representative and standardised European company survey which covers all categories of firm sizes and all sectors of the economy. This volume complements and builds on the first book published in 2007, in which the methodology and the descriptive national findings as well as some first comparative analytical results were presented. In this second book the EUCOWE research team presents in-depth cross-country analyses of the relationship between operating hours, working times and employment in the European Union. Six empirical chapters of this volume provide detailed comparative analyses of the determinants and consequences of the duration and flexibility of opening hours and operating times.

Book Synopsis Social and Family Issues in Shift Work and Non Standard Working Hours by : Irena Iskra-Golec
Download or read book Social and Family Issues in Shift Work and Non Standard Working Hours written by Irena Iskra-Golec and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-13 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the effects of shift work and non standard working hours on family and social life. It features analysis and case studies from an international body of researchers from Europe, the Americas and Australia. It includes contributions from Germany, the United States, the Netherlands, Croatia, Italy, Poland, Australia, and Brazil, that fully examine this increasingly prevalent, and global, issue. The book starts by introducing the problems of work-family linkages, shift work and non-standard work hours. Next, it details the consequences of specific features of shift schedules, such as decreased opportunities for social participation, family problems and negative effects on partners and children as well as the impact of working time arrangements on work-family conflict over time. The book then looks at the consequences of shift work and non-standard work hours on family members and the workers themselves, including the sleep and daytime functioning of adolescent family members and the ways that non-standard work schedules intersect with the particular challenges and stresses of family responsibilities and strategies that workers use to manage these challenges in sectors where non-standard schedules are the norm. Last, the book considers the role of individual differences in understanding problems of work-family relationships, including a consideration of safety and health at work from the perspective of gender and an examination of the moderating role of chronotype and circadian type characteristics on work-family conflict and work-family facilitation among male shift workers.

Book Synopsis Making Shiftwork Tolerable by : Timothy H. Monk
Download or read book Making Shiftwork Tolerable written by Timothy H. Monk and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text guides the reader through the many forms of shiftwork, adopting a broad definition as being any regularly-taken employment outside the "day working window" 06.00 to 18.00. This excellent guide introduces the many and caried forms of shiftwork, adopting from the outset a broad definition of the term to embrace any regularly-taken employment outside the 'day-working window'. The authors, both internationally recognised experts in the field, describe in jargon-free language the diverse experiences of shift workers and identify the problems associated with abnormal hours. As shiftwork becomes more prevalent, prompted by economic considerations of employers in both traditional manufacturing and more recently, in the service sector, new shiftwork patterns are being introduced. The authors acknowledge the problems inherent in studying shiftwork, reviewing three classes of study: field, survey and laboratory simulation, and discuss the role of national culture in determining and limiting the applicability of 'generic' results. Topics covered include human, biological, economic, social and domestic influences; stress, strain and shiftwork; health and safety; shiftwork and task performance.

Book Synopsis Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion in European Union Law by : Ane Aranguiz
Download or read book Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion in European Union Law written by Ane Aranguiz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-03-30 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the potential role of European Union law in combating poverty and social exclusion in the European Union. Anti-poverty strategies have been part of the European Union agenda for decades. Most saliently, over a decade ago, the EU’s Member States pledged to lift 20 million people out of poverty. In spite of this commitment, the EU did not even meet a quarter of this target, and over 113 million people still were at risk of poverty and social exclusion by the end of 2020. This book addresses the incongruence between a quite developed EU policy strategy and a well-embedded legal objective on the one hand, and the lack of direct legal action on the other. Analysing the role of social policy instruments, fundamental rights, and the constitutional framework of the European Union, it makes a detailed case for a contribution of EU law to the policy objective of combating poverty and social exclusion. Drawing on work in law, politics, social policy and economics, this book will interest scholars and policymakers in the areas of EU law, labour and social security, human rights, political science and social and public policy.

Book Synopsis Textbook of Patient Safety and Clinical Risk Management by : Liam Donaldson
Download or read book Textbook of Patient Safety and Clinical Risk Management written by Liam Donaldson and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-12-14 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Implementing safety practices in healthcare saves lives and improves the quality of care: it is therefore vital to apply good clinical practices, such as the WHO surgical checklist, to adopt the most appropriate measures for the prevention of assistance-related risks, and to identify the potential ones using tools such as reporting & learning systems. The culture of safety in the care environment and of human factors influencing it should be developed from the beginning of medical studies and in the first years of professional practice, in order to have the maximum impact on clinicians' and nurses' behavior. Medical errors tend to vary with the level of proficiency and experience, and this must be taken into account in adverse events prevention. Human factors assume a decisive importance in resilient organizations, and an understanding of risk control and containment is fundamental for all medical and surgical specialties. This open access book offers recommendations and examples of how to improve patient safety by changing practices, introducing organizational and technological innovations, and creating effective, patient-centered, timely, efficient, and equitable care systems, in order to spread the quality and patient safety culture among the new generation of healthcare professionals, and is intended for residents and young professionals in different clinical specialties.

Book Synopsis The Handbook of Operator Fatigue by : Gerald Matthews
Download or read book The Handbook of Operator Fatigue written by Gerald Matthews and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue is a recognized problem in many facets of the human enterprise. It is not confined to any one area of activity but enters all situations in which humans have to perform for extended intervals of time. Most problematic are the circumstances in which obligatory action is continuous and the results of failure are evidently serious or even catastrophic. Therefore, the modern media especially highlights fatigue-related failures in industries such as transportation, materials processing and healthcare. It can be, and indeed is, no coincidence that most of the spectacular failures in process control that have resulted in the world's largest industrial accidents have occurred in the small hours of the morning when the circadian rhythm is lowest and operator fatigue itself peaks. While there have been legislative efforts made at state, federal and international levels to regulate working hours of employees, the appropriate implementation of such legislation is still a long way off. The Handbook of Operator Fatigue provides a comprehensive account of the subject to serve as the definitive reference work for researchers, students and practitioners alike. The volume features 30 chapters written by experts from around the world to address each important facet of fatigue, including: the scale of the fatigue problem (Section I), the nature of fatigue (Section II), how to assess fatigue (Section III), the impact of fatigue on health (Section IV), fatigue in the workplace (Section V), the neurological basis of fatigue (VI), sleep disorders (VII), and the design of countermeasures to fatigue (VIII).
