Book excerpt: From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Before We Were Yours comes a sweeping novel inspired by the untold history of women pioneers who fought to protect children caught in the storm of land barons hungry for power and oil wealth. “A seamlessly crafted tale of tragedy, resilience, and triumph . . . Lisa Wingate once again gives poignant voice to the ‘lost’ children of American history.”—Lisa Scottoline, author of Eternal and Loyalty Oklahoma, 1909. Eleven-year-old Olive Augusta Radley knows that her stepfather doesn’t have good intentions toward the two Choctaw girls boarded in their home as wards. When the older girl disappears, Ollie flees to the woods, taking six-year-old Nessa with her. Together they begin a perilous journey to the remote Winding Stair Mountains, the notorious territory of outlaws, treasure hunters, and desperate men. Along the way, Ollie and Nessa form an unlikely band with others like themselves, struggling to stay one step ahead of those who seek to exploit them . . . or worse. Oklahoma, 1990. Law enforcement ranger Valerie Boren-Odell arrives at newly minted Horsethief Trail National Park seeking a quiet place to balance a career and single parenthood. But no sooner has Valerie reported for duty than she’s faced with local controversy over the park’s opening, a teenage hiker gone missing from one of the trails, and the long-hidden burial site of three children unearthed in a cave. Val’s quest for the truth wins an ally among the neighboring Choctaw Tribal Police but soon collides with old secrets and the tragic and deadly history of the land itself. In this emotional and enveloping novel, Lisa Wingate traces the story of children abandoned by the law and the battle to see justice done. Amid times of deep conflict over who owns the land and its riches, Ollie and Val traverse the rugged and beautiful terrain, each leaving behind one life in search of another.
Book Synopsis Shelterwood Regeneration of True Fir by : Robert J. Laacke
Download or read book Shelterwood Regeneration of True Fir written by Robert J. Laacke and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shelterwood cuttings on Swain Mountain Experimental Forest were measured to determine performance six to eight years after the shelterwood cutting and before shelterwood removal. Use of appropriate selecting criteria minimized windthrow of seed trees. Regeneration remained red fir, even where the major seed source was white fir. Density of seed trees may affect seedling growth only after the fourth year. Adequate regeneration can be attained and maintained at 25 trees per hectare (10/acre). In addition, the total number of seedlings produced each year was apparently not related to cone production in nearby stands.

Book excerpt: A two-stage shelterwood cutting, at 12 trees per acre, with site preparation, enhanced seedfall, regeneration, and residual growth at the Challenge Experimental Forest, north central California. Shelterwood trees produced 9.2 times more seed than trees in the control. Ponderosa pine regeneration numbered about 3700 seedlings per acre (9139 per ha) and tolerant conifers 600 seedlings (1482 per ha) after 5 years. Hardwood seedlings and sprouts also were abundant. Basal area growth rates for all species in nearly all diameter classes were greater in the shelterwood than in the control. The shelterwood cutting method is recommended for use in young-growth, mixed-conifer stands.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the theoretical basis and practical application of 20 diverse silvicultural systems for the benefit of ecologists, land-use managers and other professionals. These systems offer the key to regenerating, tending, and harvesting forests in an era of rapid deforestation and increasing demand for wood as fuel and building material. The approaches described here are being used successfully in widely different parts of the world, from Europe to the tropical rain forests, where reduced forest areas must be carefully managed in order to produce the highest possible sustained yield of timber products compatible with environmental protection and preservation. The systematic presentation and discussion of advantages and disadvantages of each program enables readers to select and apply the program most suitable for their needs.
