Download or read book Material Ecocriticism written by Serenella Iovino and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2014-09-24 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Material Ecocriticism offers new ways to analyze language and reality, human and nonhuman life, mind and matter, without falling into well-worn paths of thinking. Bringing ecocriticism closer to the material turn, the contributions to this landmark volume focus on material forces and substances, the agency of things, processes, narratives and stories, and making meaning out of the world. This broad-ranging reflection on contemporary human experience and expression provokes new understandings of the planet to which we are intimately connected.

Book Synopsis Estuarine Nutrient Cycling: The Influence of Primary Producers by : Søren Laurentius Nielsen
Download or read book Estuarine Nutrient Cycling: The Influence of Primary Producers written by Søren Laurentius Nielsen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-02-08 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a well-known fact that eutrophication of coastal waters causes significant changes in the species composition of the primary producers. Usually a shift from an ecosystem dominated by sea grasses or large brown algae to an ecosystem dominated by fast-growing green algae or phytoplankton is observed. While this shift has been documented in a number of research papers and books, the consequences of this shift are less well known. This book focuses on the consequences of such changes for nutrient cycling. The aim is to investigate how different types of primary producers influence nutrient cycling in coastal marine waters, and how nutrient cycling changes qualitatively and quantitatively as a consequence of the changes in the primary producer community caused by eutrophication. The various chapters address specific ecological processes such as grazing, decomposition, burial and export of biomass from the ecosystem. The book is intended for researchers and professionals working in the field of coastal marine ecology and estuarine ecology and for advanced students in this field.

Book Synopsis Ruling the Margins by : Prem Kumar Rajaram
Download or read book Ruling the Margins written by Prem Kumar Rajaram and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Administrative rule is a type of rule centered on devising and implementing regulations governing how we live and how we conduct ourselves economically and politically, and sometimes culturally. The principle feature of this type of rule is the important question about how things should be arranged and for what purpose becomes a bureaucratic matter. Histories of the global south are rarely used to explain contemporary political structures or phenomena. This book uses histories of colonial power and colonial state-making to shed light on administrative government as a form of rule. Prem Kumar Rajaram eloquently presents how administrative power is a social process and the authority and terms of rule derived are tenuous, dependent on producing unitary meaning and direction to diverse political, social and economic relationships and practices.

Book Synopsis Advances in Microbial Ecology by : M. Alexander
Download or read book Advances in Microbial Ecology written by M. Alexander and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microbial ecology has come of age. A long history of exploratory research and problem definition is admittedly behind us, and outstanding scientists from many regions of the world have contributed major findings to the development of the discipline. The early literature is indeed vast and impressive, yet it is still fair to say that the field is just beginning to develop in a mature fashion. The major microbial habitats and the chief inhabitants have been delineated and are only now being adequately explored; the processes that are brought about by the microscopic residents are at the present time being investigated in definitive ways; new concepts are being formulated; and novel, exciting, and useful techniques have been devised. In recognition of the emergence of microbial ecology as a rapidly growing and independent discipline, the International Commission on Microbial Ecology-a unit of the International Association of Micro biological Societies and the Division of Environmental Biology of the Inter national Union of Biological Societies-has established the Advances in Microbial Ecology and has appointed an editor and editorial board for the series. The purposes of this review series are to present in one group of volumes an overview of the information that is now spread in an enormous array of technical journals, to have authors in various areas of microbial ecology summarize and present views in depth of their own specialties, and to help promote the continued growth of microbial ecology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freshwater field tests are an integral part of the process of hazard assessment of pesticides and other chemicals in the environment. This book brings together international experts on microcosms and mesocosms for a critical appraisal of theory and practice on the subject of freshwater field tests for hazard assessment. It is an authoritative and comprehensive summary of knowledge about freshwater field tests, with particular emphasis on their optimization for scientific and regulatory purposes. This valuable reference covers both lotic and lentic outdoor systems and addresses the choice of endpoints and test methodology. Instructive case histories show how to extrapolate test results to the real world.
