Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mohonk is a name of Native American origin first given to a lake high in the Shawangunk Mountains of Ulster County. Mohonk Lake was sculpted eons ago by the crushing weight of advancing glaciers. Nature's handiwork resulted in a crystal blue lake rimmed by stately hemlock trees and sheer conglomerate cliffs. Mohonk Mountain House was established at the lake in 1869 by Quaker twins Albert and Alfred Smiley. They and younger half-brother, Daniel Smiley, created a mountaintop haven for their guests-a 251-room hotel set on acres of woodlands and gardens. Today Daniel Smiley's descendants welcome visitors to the last of the grand Victorian hotels in the Shawangunk and Catskill Mountain region. The Mohonk Preserve was carved from lands of the Mountain House beginning in 1963 and bears witness to the vision of the Smiley family. Its mission is to protect over 6,400 acres of semi-wilderness through its education, research, and land stewardship programs. Today, it is the largest nature preserve supported by members and visitors in New York State.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncover Ulster County's hidden history of unsavory characters and stories of its wicked past. Situated in the scenic Hudson Valley, Ulster County is a lovely location to make a home and raise a family, but it wasn't always so pleasant. Unsavory characters and immoral events have sullied its name. In the 1870s, the Shawangunk Mountains inspired fear rather than awe, as groups like the Lyman Freer and Shawangunk gangs robbed and terrorized locals, descending from the protection of the wooded peaks. Kingston was torched, arson blazed in Kerhonkson and even the Mohonk Mountain House was threatened by flames. In 1909, the Ashokan Slasher's bloody crimes and sensational trial captured headlines across the country. Discover these and other salacious stories buried in Ulster County's history.

Book excerpt: A deep sense of history lingers in New Paltz, still home to many direct descendants of its original families. Settled nearly three hundred twenty-five years ago by French Huguenots, the town is located halfway between New York City and Albany, a few miles west of the Hudson on the banks of the Wallkill River. In this magnificent setting, with panoramic views of the Shawangunk Mountains dominating the western horizon, a stable little community prospered. New Paltz invites readers to reflect on fascinating images that document development and inevitable change. Sky Top, with its landmark Mohonk Tower built high on the Shawangunk Ridge, beckons residents and travelers alike. Huguenot Street, famous for its original stone houses, is now a National Historic Landmark District. Each semester college students arrive to swell the population of a town that has been associated with higher education ever since a classical school was opened in 1828. New Paltz is illustrated with some two hundred unique photographs dating from the 1860s, many published here for the first time. Informative text helps track dramatic changes in architecture, modes of transportation, and lifestyle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patagonia is a strange and terrifying place, a vast tract of land shared by Argentina and Chile where the violent weather spawned over the southern Pacific charges through the Andes with gale-force winds, roaring clouds, and stinging snow. Squarely athwart the latitudes known to sailors as the roaring forties and furious fifties, Patagonia is a land trapped between angry torrents of sea and sky, a place that has fascinated explorers and writers for centuries. Magellan discovered the strait that bears his name during the first circumnavigation. Charles Darwin traveled Patagonia's windy steppes and explored the fjords of Tierra del Fuego during the voyage of the Beagle. From the novel perspective of the cockpit, Antoine de Saint-Exupry immortalized the Andes in Wind, Sand, and Stars, and a half century later, Bruce Chatwin's In Patagonia earned a permanent place among the great works of travel literature. Yet even today, the Patagonian Andes remain mysterious and remote, a place where horrible storms and ruthless landscapes discourage all but the most devoted pilgrims from paying tribute to the daunting and dangerous peaks. Gregory Crouch is one such pilgrim. In seven expeditions to this windswept edge of the Southern Hemisphere, he has braved weather, gravity, fear, and doubt to try himself in the alpine crucible of Patagonia. Crouch has had several notable successes, including the first winter ascent of the legendary Cerro Torre's West Face, to go along with his many spectacular failures. In language both stirring and lyrical, he evokes the perils of every handhold, perils that illustrate the crucial balance between physical danger and mental agility that allows for the most important part of any climb, which is not reaching the summit, but getting down alive. Crouch reveals the flip side of cutting-edge alpinism: the stunning variety of menial labor one must often perform to afford the next expedition. From building sewer systems during a bitter Colorado winter to washing the plastic balls in McDonalds' playgrounds, Crouch's dedication to the alpine craft has seen him through as many low moments as high summits. He recounts, too, the riotous celebrations of successful climbs, the numbing boredom of forced encampments, and the quiet pride that comes from knowing that one has performed well and bravely, even in failure. Included are more than two dozen color photographs that capture the many moods of this land, from the sublime beauty of the mountains at sunrise to the unrelenting fury of its storms. Enduring Patagonia is a breathtaking odyssey through one of the worldís last wild places, a land that requires great sacrifice but offers great rewards to those who dare to challenge it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surrounded by the beautiful Shawangunk Mountains, Ellenville, New York, is a gateway between the Catskills, the Hudson River Valley, and New York City. Its people and places are what make Ellenville special. Artists, laborers, entrepreneurs, and national figures are among Ellenville's citizens. Its architectural gems include the Ellenville Post Office and Hunt Memorial Building, located in the heart of the village on Liberty Square; both are in the National Register of Historic Places. The original site of the Ulster County Fair, Ellenville has been home to vital American industries. The Delaware & Hudson Canal and early railways gave rise to tanneries, glassworks, a production pottery, and a knife manufactory. Resorts, boardinghouses, and inns welcomed travelers along some of the nation's oldest roads. Originating over 200 years ago as Fairchild City, Ellenville retains its small-town character to this day.

The result is a revealing look into an expert's technique and, according to The New York Times, offer an "opportunity to know a competent illustrator in his moments of preparation."
