Download or read book Midlife written by Eugene Stickland and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2002-02-21 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [I tell her] “golf is sacred. Holy. Sacrosanct.” I like that. Sacrosanct. So she tells me about this article she read, about the attitude of the average middle-aged guy toward the game of golf…Anyway, according to Darlene, the idea behind this stupid article is that at a certain age, men give up on sex and spend all their time and energy on golf instead. To which I asked, So what’s your point? That didn’t go down so well. (Jack in Act I) The landscape of middle-aged male bravado and angst that Eugene Stickland populates here with Calgary oilmen and their romantic difficulties has been visited before—by John Updike, Richard Ford, and other prose writers of the past generation. But rarely has it been visited in dramatic form with the combination of broad humor and gentle wit that Stickland brings to this new comedy. Midlife is being published in conjunction with its world premiere as part of Alberta Theatre Projects playRites Festival, February/March 2002.

Book excerpt: *** 2018 Reader's Favorite Finalist *** Enter the world of Pure Ones, a race of immortal, supernaturally powerful beings who protect humankind, where sexual intercourse with anyone other than one’s Eternal Mate leads to a slow, painful death within thirty days. The Healer of the race, Rain, is the only exception to this rule. To harness and accumulate enough energy to heal severe wounds, especially as the war between her people and the vampire hordes accelerates, she must take a Consort once every ten years and draw strength from his blood and body. But as the war wears on, few Pure-males who are strong enough to serve as her Consort remain. Valerius, Protector of the race, is the strongest candidate. Despite their instant attraction ten years ago when they first met, Valerius has staunchly avoided applying to be the Healer’s Consort. The brutality and violence he suffered as a Roman sex slave in his human life ate away at his soul, leaving a dark abyss of torment and self-doubt. Now, as Rain’s strength drains with every healing act, Valerius cannot escape the fact that he may be the only one who can save her, and in so doing, afford his people greater hope for the future as battles intensify. Will Rain and Valerius find their way to each other as the struggles between good and evil evolve? *** Trigger Warning * Sexual Abuse. ***

Download or read book Quick, Now, Always written by Mark Irwin and published by BOA Editions, Ltd.. This book was released on 1996 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this, his third book of poetry, Mark Irwin makes stunning jumps of imagination to create a poetry that is Rilkean in conception and execution, and that speaks to America at the end of the 20th century and to the issues of history, memory, language and consciousness. Irwin's vision is as broad as Whitman's and Hart Crane's, his language propelled by charged rhythms and a lush music. These poems address the American experience, from shopping at Woolworth's to traveling into the Grand Canyon, from the art of Robert Mapplethorpe to that of Andy Warhol, who "watched the working class work and it bored (him) to beauty". At the heart of the collection is the sweeping meditation, "Turbo-Descartes", that probes how our myths and machines effect our memories and desires.

As Thérèse discovers the dead body of Delores Valdez in a plush mansion throbbing with the beauty of precious family gems, the riveting mystery begins. By book's end, with the help of her grey Angora cats, Thérèse stumbles upon clues that lead her to a clever murderer. The 4 star review by reader from Southern,CA This elegantly written little book gave me many hours of reading pleasure. It has a finely crafted murder, a bunch of suspicious characters, lots of chocolates, and a cook who presents little treats in his creations. Lacking explicit violence and blush-inducing sex. The author provides descriptive passages on several interesting subjects, including Native- American customs, preparing meals, caring for flowers, and koi fish. I enjoyed the book and gleaned a lot of information on various subjects. A little jewel of a book which will hopefully be enjoyed by many. And don't forget to drink your coffee within 20 minutes of brewing it.
