Book excerpt: This is the account of two men who believe that we are created for deep, meaningful, and emotionally intimate relationships. The authors have found these relationships with their wives, and they are models for their children. They experience this kind of relationship with each other. They share how vital these relationships are through their non-profit: Someone To Tell It To. They create safe environments for people to share the stories of their lives openly and unashamedly. They encourage others to find safe people in their lives to foster relationships that provide true support, unconditional love, and grace. This book shares the authors' stories and the stories of others who are seeking meaning and purpose in their lives, especially when faced with challenges and questions. Someone To Tell It To may remind us that we are not alone in our fears, or in our feelings of inadequacy and uncertainty. Readers may be motivated to create more vital connections in their lives, connections that can be life-giving and soul-enriching, that can bring peace in the dark seasons of our lives. "Having someone to tell it to," as author Miles Franklin writes, is "one of the fundamental needs of human beings."

Book excerpt: Sharing Life with Another is about the compassion, care and loss experienced when being with others during their end stages of life. The nine stories in this book follow a social worker who finds himself on a journey helping others, including both his parents, as they move toward death. Each story offers an insightful and touching account of how Shmal entered into circumstances where he was the one present to offer words and actions to comfort the person dying. These stories offer help to anyone who may be confronted with death and have to dive into their soul as they assist a person through the process. We learn that at times it is about knowing when to reach for the right words to share with another. Then there are moments when we need the sensitivity simply to be present, holding the space for the other. Many people are now on spiritual paths where the fear of dying is no longer kept hidden, but rather acknowledged and grappled with. These stories also offer wisdom and guidance for each of us as we prepare for our own transition from this life. The author has no clue why the work of helping dying people came into his life. After reading the Tibetan Book of Living and Dying he was hired as the Director of Social Services in a nursing home. There he felt pulled to be with many as they neared death.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the terms of Aristotle's Politics, to be alive is to instantiate a form of rule. In the growth of plants, the perceptual capacities and movement of animals, and the impulse that motivates thinking, speaking, and deliberating Aristotle sees the working of a powerful generative force come to expression in an array of forms of life, and it is in these, if anywhere, that one could find the resources needed for a philosophic account of the nature of life as such. Aristotle on the Concept of Shared Life explores this intertwining of power and life in Aristotle's thought, and argues that Aristotle locates the foundation of human political life in the capacity to share one's most vital activities with others. A comprehensive study of the relationality which shared life reveals tells us something essential about Aristotle's approach to human political phenomena; namely, that they arise as forms of intimacy whose political character can only be seen when viewed in the context of Aristotle's larger inquiries into animal life, where they emerge not as categorically distinct from animal sociality, but as intensifications of it. Tracing the human capacity to share life thus illuminates the interrelation between the zoological, ethical, and political lenses through which Aristotle pursues his investigation of the polis. In following this connection, this volume also examines — and critically evaluates — the reception of Aristotle's political thought in some of the most influential concepts of contemporary critical theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new way of understanding our place in the web of life from a scholar praised for his “graceful prose” (Publishers Weekly). The disconnection between humans and nature is perhaps one of the most fundamental problems faced by our species today. This schism is arguably the root cause of most of the environmental catastrophes unraveling around us. Until we come to terms with the depths of our alienation, we will continue to fail to understand that what happens to nature also happens to us. In The Biology of Wonder Andreas Weber proposes a new approach to the biological sciences that puts the human back in nature. He argues that feelings and emotions, far from being superfluous to the study of organisms, are the very foundation of life. From this basic premise flows the development of a "poetic ecology" which intimately connects our species to everything that surrounds us—showing that subjectivity and imagination are prerequisites of biological existence. Written by a leader in the emerging fields of biopoetics and biosemiotics, The Biology of Wonder demonstrates that there is no separation between us and the world we inhabit, and in so doing it validates the essence of our deep experience. By reconciling science with meaning, expression, and emotion, this landmark work brings us to a crucial understanding of our place in the rich and diverse framework of life—a revolution for biology as groundbreaking as the theory of relativity for physics. “Grounded in science, yet eloquently narrated, this is a groundbreaking book. Weber’s visionary work provides new insight into human/nature interconnectedness and the dire consequences we face by remaining disconnected.” —Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods

Book excerpt: The Primeiro Comando do Capital (PCC) is a Sao Paulo prison gang that since the 1990s has expanded into the most powerful criminal network in Brazil. Karina Biondi's rich ethnography of the PCC is uniquely informed by her insider-outsider status. Prior to his acquittal, Biondi's husband was incarcerated in a PCC-dominated prison for several years. During the period of Biondi's intense and intimate visits with her husband and her extensive fieldwork in prisons and on the streets of Sao Paulo, the PCC effectively controlled more than 90 percent of Sao Paulo's 147 prison facilities. Available for the first time in English, Biondi's riveting portrait of the PCC illuminates how the organization operates inside and outside of prison, creatively elaborating on a decentered, non-hierarchical, and far-reaching command system. This system challenges both the police forces against which the PCC has declared war and the methods and analytic concepts traditionally employed by social scientists concerned with crime, incarceration, and policing. Biondi posits that the PCC embodies a "politics of transcendence," a group identity that is braided together with, but also autonomous from, its decentralized parts. Biondi also situates the PCC in relation to redemocratization and rampant socioeconomic inequality in Brazil, as well as to counter-state movements, crime, and punishment in the Americas.

Book excerpt: Digital Media, Sharing and Everyday Life provides nuanced accounts of the processes of sharing in digital culture and the complexities that arise in them. The book explores definitions of sharing, and the roles that our digital devices and the platforms we use play in these practices. Drawing upon practice theory to outline a theoretical framework of sharing practice, the book emphasizes the need for a coherent and consistent framework of sharing in digital culture and explains what this framework might look like. With insightful descriptions, the book draws out the relationship of sharing to privacy and control, the labored strategies and boundaries of reciprocation, and our relationships with the technologies which mediate sharing practices. The volume is an essential read for researchers, postgraduate and undergraduate students in Media and Communication, New Media, Sociology, Internet Studies, and Cultural Studies.
