Book Synopsis Halving It All by : Francine Deutsch
Download or read book Halving It All written by Francine Deutsch and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2000-04-07 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The best way to have it all--both a full family life and a career--is to halve it all. That's the message of Francine Deutsch's refreshing and humane book, based on extensive interviews with a wide range of couples. Deutsch casts a skeptical eye on the grim story of inequality that has been told since women found themselves working a second shift at home. She brings good news: equality based on shared parenting is possible, and it is emerging all around us. Some white-collar fathers achieve as well as talk about equality, and some blue-collar parents work alternate shifts to ensure that one parent can always be with the children. Using vivid quotations from her interviews, Deutsch tells the story of couples who share parenting equally, and some who don't. The differences between the groups are not in politics, education, or class, but in the way they negotiate the large and small issues--from whose paid job is "important" to who applies the sunscreen. With the majority of mothers in the workforce, parents today have to find ways of sharing the work at home. Rigid ideas of "good mothers" and "good fathers," Deutsch argues, can be transformed into a more flexible reality: the good parent. Halving It All takes the discussion beyond shrill ideological arguments about working mothers and absent fathers. Deutsch shows how, with the best of intentions, people perpetuate inequalities and injustices on the home front, but also, and more important, how they can devise more equal arrangements, out of explicit principles, or simply out of fairness and love.

Book Synopsis All Kinds of Humor by : Frank Verano
Download or read book All Kinds of Humor written by Frank Verano and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-10 with total page 714 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a starter, let's face it; I made it to 94 years and frankly, that is an achievement that dwarf s anything else I can say about my long life so far, (and I ain't through yet.) If I were to point to the most significant event of my life I would have to say that I was a witness to a critical event in American history and perhaps in world history, the devastating attack on our Navy at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The rest of my life was somewhat nondescript in the overall scheme of things in this world. I was born (just like everyone else) in Holland Michigan, way back, a good 200 years ago.' I was a musician from the start, playing the harmonica at 10 years old. (Also, later the ukulele, mandolin, Hawaiian guitar, orchestral guitar, and marimba.) My first performance was with the harmonica before my 8th grade class! Later on as a teenager I played in an orchestra and performed at dances, night clubs and church events. Currently, I duo on the classical guitar with my flute player playing occasional concerts. Now that I think of it, I was pretty good. Being a small 109 pound guy I joined the Navy in 1940 so as to not get drafted. WW2 was already raging in Europe. I had to enlist for 6 years. That put me in WW2 from the beginning to the end and then some. Hey, I also performed on the guitar in the Navy aboard ship (between naval battles!) Upon discharge in 1946 I joined with my high school buddy to get the first printed circuit patent. I am really proud of that because printed circuits are in everything that's electronic. And we started it! It was particularly smart of me because 40 years later I needed the printed circuit in my pacemaker! Such foresight! At the same time I entered college at MIT. Our patent royalties helped pay for tuition. As long as I am being proud, I may as well include graduating from that top technical school in the country, which is pretty good for a son of an immigrant from Italy. From thereon my engineering career included teaching at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo lecturing at USC and work in computers and programming. But of course, most of my work was in the Defense industry. Now in retirement I am doing things I like to do: play music and write. Looking back I think that getting an engineering degree was a big mistake. I should have been a gigolo. Look at what I missed! Alas, it is too late!

Book Synopsis A Dance Through All Eternity by : Stephen Roth
Download or read book A Dance Through All Eternity written by Stephen Roth and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-08-01 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Call it the fear of the unknown, the fear of missing out, or the fear of failing-everyone in some way views the concept in time as daunting, restricting, or perhaps with some curiosity. Trending television shows such as DC Legends of Tomorrow, Flash, along with older ones like Lost and Doctor Who, promote the deconstruction of time and how it exists in the minuscule view humans have. A common experience one has is when they are young time seems to appear never-ending; however, as they get older, time seems to fly by. When did time, which once seemed to hold all life's promises, turn into cruel master, stealing bits of us until we are nothing but a mere memory of others? Is man nothing but dust in the wind, or mere puppets, actors on the stage of time? Is there something more? There is nothing left to ponder as this book spells out the answers everyone needs to hear. Allow yourself to be introduced to the eternal dance. It is in the eternal dance between a Father, his Son, and the Spirit that mankind can find their purpose and meaning in life. Join in the setting of the stage, meet the dancers, put on your dancing shoes, and learn the steps until you too are dancing in time.
