Book excerpt: There are a few narrations from the Prophet ﷺ that encourage Muslims to recite Sūrah al-Kahf on a weekly basis. That is why it is a common practice across the world to recite Sūrah al-Kahf on Fridays. This is a beautiful practice that helps strengthen one's relationship with the Quran and builds a culture of recitation. However, more important than simply reciting the Sūrah as a ritual is connecting with it emotionally, intellectually, spiritually, and trying our best to understand its message and apply its guidance into our daily lives. This work explores the meanings, lessons, reminders, benefits, morals, and guidance of Sūrah al-Kahf based on classical and contemporary sources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the most prominent figures in African-American Islam have been dismissed as Muslim heretics and cultists. Focusing on the works of five of these notable figures—Edward W. Blyden, Noble Drew Ali, Elijah Muhammad, Malcolm X, and Wallace D. Muhammad—author Edward E. Curtis IV examines the origin and development of modern African-American Islamic thought. Curtis notes that intellectual tensions in African-American Islam parallel those of Islam throughout its history—most notably, whether Islam is a religion for a particular group of people or whether it is a religion for all people. In the African-American context, such tensions reflect the struggle for black liberation and the continuing reconstruction of black identity. Ultimately, Curtis argues, the interplay of particular and universal interpretations of the faith can allow African-American Islam a vision that embraces both a specific group of people and all people.

Book excerpt: "Hujjat Allah al-Balighah: Unveiling Divine Proof" stands as a magnum opus by Shah Wali Allah of Delhi, a prominent Islamic intellect from pre-modern South Asia. Originally penned in Arabic, this masterpiece epitomizes a harmonious fusion of authoritative Islamic intellectual disciplines prevailing in the 18th century. Delving into the realm of reason, ethics, and spirituality, Shah Wali Allah meticulously constructs a comprehensive framework that underscores the imperative fusion of Prophet Muhammad's hadith injunctions. This framework intricately weaves together metaphysical, psychological, and societal knowledge of its era, offering profound insights. A panoramic canvas of Muslim theology and interpretive methodologies on the cusp of modernity unfolds within these pages, leaving an indelible influence on contemporary Islamic movements. Within these very pages, Shah Wali Allah traverses subjects ranging from faith to social fabric, spanning politics, statecraft, economics, and beyond. Legal and juristic notions harmoniously coexist with philosophical and metaphysical contemplations. A symphony of insights catering to the exigencies of both the worldly domain and ultimate salvation in the Hereafter resounds throughout his discourse.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A great religious teacher of the 18th century, Shah Waliullah of Delhi distinguished himself as a major thinker from the age of 15. He helped to revive the Islamic consciousness by "channeling the streams of the Sufi spiritual heritage into traditional Islam" (Professor Aziz Ahmed, Toronto) and returned to the essentials of Sufi experience in order to show that, essentially, Sufism is one discipline. He showed, for instance, that the long-standing assumption that Sufi doctrine was divided between Apparentism and Unity of Being was a difference of expression alone, the latter doctrine (of Ibn Arabi) being seen as merely a less-advanced stage of projection. Many of the subjects dealt with by him in these two treatises are closely studied today. These include stages of being, the perceptive faculty, the relation of the abstract with the universe, the universal soul and the souls of man, after death, essence, miracles, the scope of man, the soul of the perfect, universal order, source of manifestation, and the transformation of mystics from quality to quality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abdulkarim Soroush is known primarily for his epistemological/hermeneutical theory, the “Contraction and Expansion of Religious Knowledge,” and its application to Islamic political theory and religious pluralism. While his Reason, Freedom and Democracy in Islam applies that theory to plurality and the historicity of understanding and interpretation of religion, this book captures some of his original theories about religion itself. The Expansion of Prophetic Experience treats the historicity of the Prophet Muhammad’s revelatory experience, including human and contextual influences on the genesis of the sacred Text. It presents substantial aspects of Soroush’s Neo-Rationalist hermeneutical project for an Islamic reformed theology and ethics, systematically leading Islamic reformation beyond conventional projects of piecemeal adjustments to the Shariʿah or selective re-interpretations of the Qurʾān.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Element brings together the history of emotions and temporalities, offering a new perspective on both. Time was often imagined as a movement from the past to the future: the past is gone and the future not yet here. Only present-day subjects could establish relations to other times, recovering history as well as imagining and anticipating the future. In a movement paralleling the emphasis on the porous self, constituted by emotions situated not inside but between subjects, this Element argues for a porous present, which is open to the intervention of ghosts coming from the past and from the future. What needs investigating is the flow between times as much as the creation of boundaries between them, which first banishes the ghosts and then denies their existence. Emotions are the most important way through which subjects situate and understand themselves in time.

Coming from the pen of the first serious Asian scholar and a Japanese, this book is now available in a new improved edition.
