Book excerpt: Swordplay, magic, intrigue and friendships stronger than iron: the first volume in the new swashbuckling fantasy series set in the universe of THE GREATCOATS. Damelas Chademantaigne picked a poor night to flee a judicial duel. He has precious little hope of escaping the wrath of the Vixen, the most feared duellist in the entire city, until he stumbles through the stage doors of the magnificent Operato Belleza and tricks his way into the company of actors. An archaic law provides a temporary respite from his troubles - until one night a ghostly voice in his head causes Damelas to fumble his lines, inadvertently blurting out a dreadful truth: the city's most legendary hero may actually be a traitor and a brutal murderer. With only the help of his boisterous and lusty friend Bereto, a beautiful assassin whose target may well be Damelas himself, and a company of misfit actors who'd just as soon see him dead, this failed grandson of two Greatcoats must somehow find within himself the courage to dig up long-buried truths before a ruthless band of bravos known as the Iron Orchids come for his head. Oh, and there's still that matter of the Vixen waiting to duel him . . . Readers love Play of Shadows! Book Synopsis Shadow Play by : Sheri Lynn Gibbings
Download or read book Shadow Play written by Sheri Lynn Gibbings and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2021-07-30 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on government-organized relocations of street vendors in Indonesia, Shadow Play carefully exposes the reasons why conflicts over urban planning are fought through information politics. Anthropologist Sheri Lynn Gibbings shows that information politics are the principal avenues through which the municipal government of Yogyakarta city seeks to implement its urban projects. Information politics are also the primary means through which street vendors, activists, and NGOs can challenge these plans. Through extensive interviews and lengthy participant observation in Yogyakarta, Gibbings shows that both state and non-state actors engage in transparency, rumours, conspiracies, and surveillance practices. Gibbings reveals that these entangled information practices create suspicion and fear, form new solidarities, and dissolve relationships. Shadow Play is a compelling study explaining how we cannot understand urban projects in post-Suharto Indonesia and the resistance to them without first understanding the complexities embedded in the information practices.

Book Synopsis The Shadow Teller's Plays by : Bill Reed
Download or read book The Shadow Teller's Plays written by Bill Reed and published by Reed Independent. This book was released on 2017-12-13 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a volume containing 14 original plays – including three shadow-play adaptions of Gogol, Morton and Runyon classics – the author resurrects a sadly neglected theatre genre – the shadow play combining traditional shadow techniques with normal acting to create ‘full-bodied’ mainstream plays. These plays do not use shadow puppetry-type techniques that need people contorting themselves, however wonderfully, to form shapes, but rather normal acting prowess together and usual props of mainstream theatre with the new back-lighting technologies. The result is plays which are realistic and yet overlain with the imaginative fantasies that figure theatre can bring… in a fallow area lying between mime and conventional stage plays… a rediscovered form of a modern staging that crosses between live and shadow effect, whether in workshopping for all ages and group-size or for professional productions. Shadow plays comprise the theatre landscape for live actors re-skilled to jump from behind-the-screen one-dimensional acting to front-of-the-screen three-dimensional acting at any moment of the play. They allow a new and exciting way of presenting the combination of the real and the surreal in ways that offer broadened audience and student experiences, under the master-of-storytelling of a shadow teller together with the master-of-pacing of a mobile light spotter.
Book Synopsis Tall Tree, Nest of the Wind: The Javanese Shadow-play Dewa Ruci Performed by Ki Anom Soeroto by : Bernard Arps
Download or read book Tall Tree, Nest of the Wind: The Javanese Shadow-play Dewa Ruci Performed by Ki Anom Soeroto written by Bernard Arps and published by NUS Press. This book was released on 2016-04-18 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Javanese shadow puppetry is a sophisticated dramatic form, often felt to be at the heart of Javanese culture, drawing on classic texts but with important contemporary resonance in fields like religion and politics. How to make sense of the shadow-play as a form of world-making? In Tall Tree, Nest of the Wind, Bernard Arps explores this question by considering an all-night performance of Dewa Ruci, a key play in the repertoire. Thrilling and profound, Dewa Ruci describes the mighty Bratasena’s quest for the ultimate mystical insight. The book presents Dewa Ruci as rendered by the distinguished master puppeteer Ki Anom Soeroto in Amsterdam in 1987. The book’s unusual design presents the performance texts together with descriptions of the sounds and images that would remain obscure in conventional formats of presentation. Copious annotations probe beneath the surface and provide an understanding of the performance's cultural complexity. These annotations explain the meanings of puppet action, music, and shifts in language; how the puppeteer wove together into the drama the circumstances of the performance in Amsterdam, Islamic and other religious ideas, and references to contemporary Indonesian political ideology. Also revealed is the performance’s historical multilayering and the picture it paints of the Javanese past. Tall Tree, Nest of the Wind not only presents an unrivalled insight into the artistic depth of wayang kulit, it exemplifies a new field of study, the philology of performance.

Download or read book Behind The Shadow: Parts 1-4 written by Antoinette George and published by Brangwyn Press. This book was released on 2020-12-18 with total page 1980 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compelling romance and swashbuckling thrills. Shadows aren’t always what they seem. The dramatic and gripping story of one man with two lives and the woman he craves, but cannot have… It started with one exceptional man, Francis Granville. He was a British aristocrat with an illustrious title and lineage that could be traced back for centuries. However, this was no bored, frivolous, idle peer or courtier. Behind the veneer of remote, ducal aloofness that most of late 18th century aristocratic society saw, Francis was both an extremely able as well as a down-to-earth and charming man. To those aware of his extensive business interests, he was astute, rich and powerful, with diverse enterprises and holdings around the expanding British Empire and further, to countries eager and open to trade. However, absolutely no one knew about his ‘little sideline’ - because he was also a ruthless, faceless and elusive criminal, known only as The Shadow, or L’Ombre. He had a price on his head and was wanted on both sides of the English Channel for smuggling and pirating. Francis Granville was one man with two lives. And then, one fateful day changed the course of his life. While he was in Normandy, in northern France, on one of his illegal trading expeditions, L’Ombre was approached for help by a Frenchwoman, desperate to save her family. The lengths she’d gone to in order to find him and plead her case made him wonder what it would be like to have someone care for him so much they’d risk losing everything they owned, including their freedom, even their life, just to save him from a dire fate. Francis had always managed to wrap most people around his little finger, especially women; he’d also laughed at danger, thought himself untouchable and invincible, and relished the excitement his secret double life brought him. That was until his long-time enemy finally caught up with him, a malicious and clever adversary who’d been using the growing social unrest and inefficient government in France during the late 1780’s and the start of the Revolution to further his own nefarious ends. Francis’s arrogance and distraction were nearly his downfall, causing him to risk losing not only his life in terrible circumstances, but also the unconventional woman who meant everything to him.
