Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first dictionary of Seychelles Creole to focus upon translation into English. Seychelles Creole is the mother tongue of Seychellois and the language is strongly promoted by the Seychelles Government. However, the government also recognises the global importance of English and schools teach students the language to a high degree of competence. Today, Creole remains the language most commonly used in the home and between Seychellois in all situations. However, most Seychellois are very competent in English. A reasonable command of both languages is extremely useful in Seychelles.

Book excerpt: Covering the political, social and historical background of each language, Dictionary of Languages offers a unique insight into human culture and communication. Every language with official status is included, as well as all those that have a written literature and 175 'minor' languages with special historical or anthropological interest. We see how, with the rapidly increasing uniformity of our culture as media's influence spreads, more languages have become extinct or are under threat of extinction. The text is highlighted by maps and charts of scripts, while proverbs, anecdotes and quotations reveal the features that make a language unique.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1970s, the newly independent Seychelles government took the landmark decision to make Seychellois Creole (SC) an official language. The Seychelles thus became the first Creole-speaking country worldwide to give its Creole the status of a national language and to use it as a medium of instruction. The decision to use SC in the school system has resulted in many positive developments such as increasing rates in public literacy. Despite these advances, there are many critics who contend that formal instruction in SC interferes with the speedy and necessary acquisition of English and French, which are internationally associated with socio-economic power and prestige. This book assesses the attitudes of SC speakers towards their mother tongue, in relation to the colonial history of the country. Its objectives are twofold: firstly to shed light upon the attitudes which modern Seychellois hold towards their mother tongue and its use in the education system; and secondly to demonstrate how these attitudes may affect the achievement of the government's educational agenda. The findings of this book are directly relevant for other investigators interested in globalization, multilingual education, pluriliteracy, minority language maintenance, language policy, and teacher training. Moreover, the implications of this research are applicable to other post-colonial settings throughout Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas where the pursuit of sensitive yet effective multilingual educational policies remains acute.

Chapters: English language, French language, Seychellois Creole. Excerpt: English is a West Germanic language that was first spoken in early medieval England and is now the most widely used language in the world. It is spoken as a first language by the majority populations of several sovereign states, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand and a number of Caribbean nations. It is the third-most-common native language in the world, after Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. It is widely learned as a second language and is an official language of the European Union, many Commonwealth countries and the United Nations, as well as in many world organisations. English arose in the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of England and what is now southeast Scotland. Following the extensive influence of Great Britain and the United Kingdom from the 17th century to the mid-20th century, through the British Empire, and also of the United States since the mid-20th century, it has been widely propagated around the world, becoming the leading language of international discourse and the lingua franca in many regions. Historically, English originated from the fusion of closely related dialects, now collectively termed Old English, which were brought to the eastern coast of Great Britain by Germanic settlers (Anglo-Saxons) by the 5th century - with the word English being derived from the name of the Angles, and ultimately from their ancestral region of Angeln (in what is now Schleswig-Holstein). A significant number of English words are constructed on the basis of roots from Latin, because Latin in some form was the lingua franca of the Christian Church and of European intellectual life. The language was further influenced by the Old Norse language because of Viking invasions in the 9th and 10th centuries. The...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection considers the significance of Creole cultures within current, changing global contexts. With a particular focus on post-colonial Small Island Developing States, it brings together perspectives from academics, policy makers and practitioners including those based in Dominica, St Lucia, Seychelles and Mauritius. Together they provide a rich exploration of issues that arise in relation to safeguarding the intangible cultural heritage that sustains Creole identities. Commencing with considerations of the UNESCO (2003) Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH), the collection then presents case studies from the Seychelles, Mauritius, St. Lucia and Dominica. These attest to the many and different ways through which Creole cultural practices remain significant to the lived experiences of Creole communities. These chapters exemplify how through activities such as storytelling, singing, dancing, making artworks and the alternative economic practice of koudmen, Creole peoples sustain cultural identities that draw strength from their traditions. Yet there is also recognition of the continual struggle to sustain Creole cultural practices in the face of global economic and political pressures and related uncertainties. This global economic landscape also has an impact upon how Creole cultures are presented to tourists and hence upon the ways in which cultural practices are supported.
