Principles of bystander intervention identify the first steps to behavioral change is clearing obstacles of knowledge (Aronowitz et al., 2012; Burn, 2009). Rape myths were identified as a perpetuating force in our rape culture to support the continuation of sexual violence (Ryan, 2011; Weiss, 2009). The purpose of the current study is to investigate the use of sexual violence education on rape myths via an allied masculinity and bystander intervention. This investigation found RMA was reduced as measured by the Updated IRMA-SF Scale after participation in the "Men of UT" program. Further, three of the four subscales demonstrated significant reduction of RMA as measured by the Update IRMA-SF Scale. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to evaluate a sexual assault prevention program targeting college fraternity men. Specifically, this study sought to examine consumer satisfaction feedback for the "Men in Violence Prevention" (MIVP) program and to determine if significant differences were observed between participants' scores on various measures assessing rape-supportive attitudes, victim empathy, and acceptance of rape myths before (pre-test) and after (post-test) attending the MIVP program. Responses from the Elaboration Likelihood Model Questionnaire-Likert (ELMQ-L) portion of the consumer satisfaction questionnaire were quite favorable overall (84%), suggesting that participants were actively engaged in the program and found it to be valuable, informational, and personally relevant. Analysis of the open-ended consumer satisfaction responses revealed that the primary strengths identified for this program included the speakers, media, and applicable, understandable, and meaningful information provided. The primary criticisms were that the program was too long and the atmosphere of the program was sexist in that men were unfairly blamed for the majority of problems related to sexual assault and rape. Results showed significant differences between pre-test scores and post-test scores for the Reaction to Offensive Language and Behavior (ROLB) subscales, indicating that after attending the program, participants endorsed less comfort with sexist language and behavior and more willingness to intervene in situations where sexist language and behavior were observed. No significant differences were observed between pre-test and post-test scores on measures assessing rape empathy or rape myth acceptance. Post-hoc analysis revealed that at post-test only, older students reported more willingness to intervene in situations where sexist language and behavior are observed than younger students and participants perceived their peers as having more rape supportive attitudes than themselves. No significant differences were observed on any measure at any time point based on the participants' ethnicity, previous attendance at a sexual assault program, or endorsement of knowing a victim. Due to a number of limitations in this study, it is recommended that the findings be viewed with caution. A discussion of these findings, their limitations, and suggestions for future research were presented.

So, this study sought to understand the relationship between conformity to hegemonic masculinity and acceptance of male rape myths among male university students. This study also analyzed the influence of media, interpersonal communication, and sexual violence support services in shaping perceptions about masculinity and male rape myths. In an online survey involving male students from one mid-sized Midwestern university, conformity to four dimensions of hegemonic masculinity were found to be related to acceptance of male rape myths: self-reliance, violence, power over women, and disdain for homosexuality. The findings of this study indicate that media is generally not influential in shaping male university students' perceptions of masculinity and acceptance of male rape myths, with the exception of streaming services. Interpersonal communication was not related to acceptance of male rape myths, but certain social groups were influential in shaping perceptions of masculinity. This study also found that only one support service included in the survey was influential in reducing acceptance of male rape myths.

Book excerpt: Sexual assault in the United States continues to be a major societal problem which often results in serious long-term consequences for the survivors, with perpetrators most commonly being men. Sexual assault prevention programs for college men often lack theories to guide the research and demonstrate mixed results. Previous research has demonstrated that more traditional male gender role identity is linked to sexual assault supportive attitudes and behaviors, suggesting that masculine ideology could be a contributing factor to college men?s reactions to a sexual assault prevention program. The purpose of this study was to test a model of how male gender role identity constructs influence college men?s reactions to a sexual assault prevention program through the Elaboration Likelihood Model. Participants were 97 college men, ages 18 to 22. They completed measures of adherence to masculine ideologies, then participated in an hour long sexual assault prevention program focused on bystander prevention, and finally completed measures of central route processing and outcome variables. Structural equation modeling was used to test a model of how masculine ideologies and central route processing contributed to outcome results. These results indicated that men who adhered to more traditional masculine ideologies were less likely to engage in central route processing, a thoughtful processing of the information provided in the prevention program. Additionally, less adherence to traditional masculinity predicted more behavioral intentions to change as a result of the program and less acceptance of rape myths. More engagement in central route processing also predicted more positive outcomes such as behavioral intentions to change and less rape myth acceptance. Results from hierarchical linear regression analysis indicated that central route processing was more influential on the outcome variables than masculine ideology. Implications for this research include support of sexual assault prevention programs based on the Elaboration Likelihood Model as being potentially effective regardless of the men?s existing masculine ideologies.

Book excerpt: One in five college women report being sexually assaulted (National Sexual Violence Resource Center, 2015) with college being the time when men are more likely to commit a sexual assault (Burgess, 2007). Victimization detracts from their college experience, leading to poor academic performance or less institutional commitment. College women who are victims of sexual assault are also at a higher risk of participating in risky sexual behavior. To reduce the prevalence of sexual assault at universities, it is important to develop effective prevention programs that can target and change attitudes and beliefs that contribute to the continued perpetuation of sexual violence on college campuses. Although there are multiple studies that examine the perspectives of sexual assault among college students, specifically rape myths, the majority of that research is quantitative and does not provide an in depth understanding of their beliefs and the potential factors that contribute to those beliefs. The purpose of this study was to provide an in depth analysis of the attitudes and beliefs about sexual assault among college students. Twenty-five female and 20 male college students participated in semi-structured focus groups or interviews. Open coding was used to gain an understanding of their beliefs concerning sexual assault. Results demonstrated that students possess multiple and often contradictory beliefs about sexual assault and issues that contribute to those beliefs that can be addressed and changed using sexual assault prevention. Three of those broad themes included barriers to talking about sexual assault, social and cultural norms that contribute to sexual assault and how college students communicate their sexual needs and desires, including consent. This research reveals that researchers and advocates do not have a complete understanding of perspectives of sexual assault among college students. Prevention programs may have been developed based on incomplete information and assumptions about what college students believe. Therefore, this study provides information that can be used to develop intervention programs that specifically target the most relevant ideas about sexual assault that are most relevant to the experiences of college students.

Furthermore, while the disclosure rates to informal sources are more prevalent, disclosure to formal sources (e.g., legal authorities and university staff) and mental health service use of college students who have experienced sexual assault are low. As such, understanding the factors that either facilitate or hinder disclosure and service-seeking is of critical importance. Research has identified rape myth acceptance (RMA) and acknowledgment of the victimization (i.e., whether the survivor labels their experience as sexual assault) as two factors that shape the likelihood of whether a college survivor will disclose the incident or seek mental health services post-assault. The present study, therefore, focused on two aims: 1) to examine whether levels of RMA and acknowledgment are predictive of disclosing sexual assault and mental health service-seeking behaviors among college student survivors, and 2) to assess the indirect effects of RMA on disclosing the incident or seeking services for the assault via acknowledgment. Results identified RMA and acknowledgment as predictors of disclosure and service-seeking behaviors. Additionally, analyses provided evidence that certain types of rape myths are predictive of the outcomes. Results did not provide supporting evidence for the indirect effect of RMA on disclosure and service-seeking via acknowledgment. Implications for prevention, advocacy, and clinical practice, as well as future directions for research, are provided.

Book excerpt: Sexual assault on college campuses has recently grown into a national conversation. There has been a push for universities to examine sexual assault on their campuses, but much of this research has focused on major universities in metropolitan areas. This project extends current research by analyzing the sexual assault experiences and attitudes of students at a mid-sized rural public university. A new survey instrument based on validated campus climate surveys was completed by 522 students at this university. This study evaluates the rape-supportive attitudes of participants and how those attitudes might be impacted by various factors, specifically if sex, being a victim, knowing a victim, being unsure about victimization, and going through sexual assault training influenced the rape myth acceptance (RMA) of students. While most results were not generalizable, males and earlier-year students were significantly more likely to agree with rape myth statements than their counterparts. Victims and those who knew victims had lower RMA means than their peers, and "unsure" participants had higher means than their counterparts. Contrary to expectations, sexual assault training lowered RMA only slightly in one circumstance, and in other tests corresponded with higher RMA. Implications of the results and recommendations to the university are discussed.

Book excerpt: Sexual violence is an issue pervasive on university and college campuses, however research on this topic has primarily been focused in the United States, and focuses on experiences of sexual violence, with limited focus on the social system it flourishes within. Guided by the principles of Community Engaged Scholarship, this research project utilizes a feminist framework to examine rape culture on the University of Guelph campus, and the impact of education efforts in mitigating rape culture and rape myth acceptance. Through the use of online survey modules, and focus groups, this research project finds that while education offered does have an impact on student's acceptance of rape myths, male students are still more likely to accept these myths over female students. Based on the findings of this research project, it is recommended that future research focus on the impact of sexual violence prevention education on male students specifically.
