Book Synopsis Magic in Malta: Sellem bin al-Sheikh Mansur and the Roman Inquisition, 1605 by : Dionysius A. Agius
Download or read book Magic in Malta: Sellem bin al-Sheikh Mansur and the Roman Inquisition, 1605 written by Dionysius A. Agius and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-06-27 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, a microhistorical approach is employed to provide a transcription, translation, and case-study of the proceedings (written in Latin, Italian and Arabic) of the Roman Inquisition on Malta’s 1605 trial of the ‘Moorish’ slave Sellem Bin al-Sheikh Mansur, who was accused and found guilty of practising magic and teaching it to the local Christians. Through both a detailed commentary and individual case-studies, it assesses what these proceedings reflect about religion, society, and politics both on Malta and more widely across the Mediterranean in the early 17th century. In so doing, this inter- and multi-disciplinary project speaks to a wide range of subjects, including magic, Christian-Muslim relations, slavery, Maltese social history, Mediterranean history, and the Roman Inquisition. It will be of interest to both students and researchers who study any of these subjects, and will help demonstrate the richness and potential of the documents in the Maltese archives. Book excerpt: This book is the first-ever study of Malta's major eighteenth-century composer, Benigno Zerafa (1726 - 1804), a specialist in sacred music composition. This book is the first-ever study of Malta's major eighteenth-century composer, Benigno Zerafa (1726-1804), a specialist in sacred music composition. Zerafa's large-scale and small-scale vocal and choral works, mostly written during his long service as musical director at the Cathedral of Mdina, have been winning increased recognition in recent years. In addition to describing and analysing this extensive corpus, the book gives an account of Zerafa's sometimes eventful career against the wider background of the rich musical and cultural life in Malta, especial attention being paid to its strong links with Italy, and particularly Naples, where Zerafa was a student for six years. Itexamines in detail the complex relationship of music to Catholic liturgy and investigates the distinctive characteristics of the musical style, intermediate between baroque and classical, in which Zerafa was trained and always composed: one that today is commonly labelled "galant". Well stocked with music examples, the book makes copious reference to Italian and Maltese composers from Zerafa's time and to modern analytical studies of Italian music from the middle decades of the eighteenth century, thereby offering a useful general commentary on the galant period. Its central aim, however, is to stimulate further interest in, and revival of, Zerafa's music. To this end the book contains a complete work-list with supplementary indexes. Scholars and students of eighteenth-century music, in particular sacred music, the galant style and Italian music, will find it invaluable. FREDERICK AQUILINAis Senior Lecturer in Music Studies at the University of Malta.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So whats in the Petri dish Dr. Periwinkle? A Synopsis: Whats it like to know that your future and a decision that could possibly change your future in a huge way is going to be decided not as much by scientists, but by politicians? Thats exactly what Dr. Oliver Periwinkle learns only after a few months as Chair of the Albert Einstein Department of Science and Technology at Belvedere Crossing University. Excited by the prospect of joining the faculty of one of the nations pre-eminent research institutions in the fall of 2000; he brings with him the promise of a significant federal grant to continue a highly controversial Stem cell initiative. Obviously life is good. But as quickly as fortunes can blossom, they can turn, and turn they do as a bizarre series of events start to unfold. So begins the often amusing and delightful romp through the Halls of Letters that chronicle a litany of asinine behavior, a gluttony of academic has-beens, political crackpots, government double-talk and of coursecorruption and greed. So whats in the Petri dish is set in a university environment fractured by cynicism and an insanity that has run-a-muck. Periwinkle encounters a host of good guys and bad guys, G-men and Wise-guys in a brush with Nobel Prize fortune and fame; corporate espionage and congressional hearings where I have no recollection of that Senator, more often than not is bellowed by just about anyone with something to hide. It is an exaggeration of the absurda microcosm that peeks behind its own closed doors, secret files, and clandestine meetings only to discover time and time again, the enemy is us. So whats in the Petri dish is the coming of age of a nave latter day scholar who is indoctrinated to a culture of perpetual chaos as a university transforms in the midst of perhaps one of the greatest scientific discoveries of our time. Here we get a glimpse of idealism as it comes face to face with reality while society struggles with a phenomenon that will ultimately shape and define its values. Alas, So whats in the Petri dish is a venture into higher educations inner sanctum; yet never once promising the reader to emerge any smarter, but perhaps wiser for making the journey. Many deem it a clear case of morality vs. mortality, rightor is it? Ever since that sheep, I know Ive been a little curious. What about you? Dr. Michael Fontaine is a university Professor, former journalist and freelance photographer.
