It is also suitable for use as a text in a general cytogenetics course, since the basic features of chromosome structure and behavior are shared by all eukar yotes. Because my own background includes plant and animal cytoge netics, many of the examples are taken from organisms other than man. Since the book is written from a cytogeneticist's point of view, human syndromes are described only as illustrations of the effects of abnormal chromosome constitutions on the phenotype. The selection of the phe nomena to be discussed and of the photographs to illustrate them is, in many cases, subjective and arbitrary and is naturally influenced by my interests and the work done in our laboratory. The approach to citations is the exact opposite of that usually used in scientific papers. Whenever possible, the latest and/or most comprehen sive review has been cited, instead of the original publication. Thus the reader is encouraged to delve deeper into any question of interest to him or her. I am greatly indebted to many colleagues for suggestions and criticism. From the “criminal chromosome” to the “gay gene,” claims about the influence of genes like these have led to often vitriolic national debates about race, class, and inequality. Many behavior geneticists have encountered accusations of racism and have had their scientific authority and credibility questioned, ruining reputations, and threatening their access to coveted resources. In Misbehaving Science, Aaron Panofsky traces the field of behavior genetics back to its origins in the 1950s, telling the story through close looks at five major controversies. In the process, Panofsky argues that persistent, ungovernable controversy in behavior genetics is due to the broken hierarchies within the field. All authority and scientific norms are questioned, while the absence of unanimously accepted methods and theories leaves a foundationless field, where disorder is ongoing. Critics charge behavior geneticists with political motivations; champions say they merely follow the data where they lead. But Panofsky shows how pragmatic coping with repeated controversies drives their scientific actions. The more significant of the implications of such X-linkage include:^L^L ^DBL Males tend to be more variable in intelligence. It is well known that males are far more likely to have intellectual deficits, including mental subnormality, learning disorders, and behavior problems. This book also presents evidence that males are more likely to be exceptionally high in cognitive abilities (other than memory), and in such areas as advanced mathematics, spatial perception, and creative music.^L ^L ^DBL Partial or total reversions to the aboriginal level of intelligence can account for virtually all cases of non-specific mental subnormality. These conditions are now identified by such terms as Renpenning syndrome, Martin-Bell syndrome, Fragile-X syndrome, and cultural-familial mental retardation. Because of the probability of offsetting genes, females are less likely to be severely affected by these conditions. ^DBL Since the X-linked genes control a pattern of growth, boys are more variable in the age of readiness for the skills required for progress in school. Some are precocious, but many are delayed, and not ready for the three R's at the traditional age of 6. This is the basis for almost all cases of learning disability.^L^L ^DBL Being on the X-chromosome, these genes, favorable or unfavorable, are not passed on from father to son, although they are passed on from father to daughter. This invalidates earlier studies of parent-child transmission of IQ, which have included father-son correlations. In effect, earlier studies have come up with estimates of the heritability of intelligence that are too low.
