Book Synopsis The Doctrines of Grace in an Unexpected Place by : Mark R. Stevenson

This book was released on 2017-03-10 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does God sovereignly elect some individuals for salvation while passing others by? Do human beings possess free will to embrace or reject the gospel? Did Christ die equally for all people or only for some? These questions have long been debated in the history of the Christian church. Answers typically fall into one of two main categories, popularly known as Calvinism and Arminianism. The focus of this book is to establish how one nineteenth-century evangelical group, the Brethren, responded to these and other related questions. The Brethren produced a number of colorful leaders whose influence was felt throughout the evangelical world. Although many critics have assumed the movement's theology was Arminian, this book argues that the Brethren, with few exceptions, advocated Calvinistic positions. Yet there were some twists along the way! The movement's radical biblicism, passionate evangelism, and strong aversion to systematic theology and creeds meant they refused to label themselves as Calvinists even though they affirmed Calvinism's soteriological principles--the so-called doctrines of grace.
Book Synopsis Letters in Primitive Christianity by : William G. Doty
Download or read book Letters in Primitive Christianity written by William G. Doty and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-12-02 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here at last is the synthesis of the diverse research on the letters of the early Christians--the primary medium for primitive Christian business, theology, and teaching. With unusual clarity, William G. Doty discusses both the cultural setting of the letters and the literary aspects of the epistles of the early Christians to offer further clues to these people and their times. Singling out Paul's letters, Doty analyzes their formal and structural features and examines their importance as the norm for the early church. Other New Testament letters, which disclose the development of a long series of writings in that form, are also explored.

Download or read book Early Christianity and Classical Culture written by John Fitzgerald and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2003-12-01 with total page 762 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains 28 essays in honor of Abraham J. Malherbe, whose work has been especially influential in exploring modes of cultural interaction between early Jews and Christians and their Graeco-Roman neighbours. Following an introductory essay on the problems inherent to such comparative studies in the history of New Testament scholarship, the essays are grouped into five topic areas: Graphos — semantics and writing, Ethos — ethics and moral characterization, Logos — rhetoric and literary expression, Ethnos — self-definition and acculturation, and Nomos — law and normative values. Some key examples are studies dealing with The Greek Idea of "Divine Nature" and its relation to the "Divine Man" tradition; Compilation of Letters in Cicero's collection; Radical Altruism in Paul; Greek Ideas of Concord and Cosmic Harmony in 1 Clement; The Rhetorical Use of Friendship Motifs in Galatians in comparison with Second Sophistic Orators; Wills and Testaments in Graeco-Roman perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Letter collections in late antiquity give witness to the flourishing of letter-writing, with the development of the mostly formulaic exchanges between elites of the Graeco-Roman world to a more wide-ranging correspondence by bishops and monks, as well as emperors and Gothic kings. The contributors to this volume study individual collections from the first to sixth centuries CE, ranging from the Pauline and Deutero-Pauline letters through monastic letters from Egypt, bishops' letter collections and early papal collections compiled for various purposes. This is the first multi-authored study of New Testament and late antique letter collections, crossing the traditional divide between these disciplines by focusing on Latin, Greek, Coptic and Syriac epistolary sources. It draws together leading scholars in the field of late antique epistolography from Australasia, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States.
