Book excerpt: Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Fences and The Piano Lesson Winner of the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play It is the spring of 1948. In the still cool evenings of Pittsburgh's Hill district, familiar sounds fill the air. A rooster crows. Screen doors slam. The laughter of friends gathered for a backyard card game rises just above the wail of a mother who has lost her son. And there's the sound of the blues, played and sung by young men and women with little more than a guitar in their hands and a dream in their hearts. August Wilson's Seven Guitars is the sixth chapter in his continuing theatrical saga that explores the hope, heartbreak, and heritage of the African-American experience in the twentieth century. The story follows a small group of friends who gather following the untimely death of Floyd "Schoolboy" Barton, a local blues guitarist on the edge of stardom. Together, they reminisce about his short life and discover the unspoken passions and undying spirit that live within each of them.

Reference books for the 7-string guitar have their uses but what's lacking is an actual method for applying and transferring what you already know to this new instrument. This book goes beyond the limits of a reference book to provide you with a complete system for learning and/or transferring scales, arpeggios, chords and triads to the 7-string fretboard, in any key. This book is for guitarists who: -Want to understand how scales, chords, arpeggios and triads work on a 7-string guitar. -Are looking for a 7-string guitar method, not a reference book. -Already have a good knowledge of theory and want to transfer it to the 7-string guitar. -Are making the transition from 6 to 7 strings. -Feel that the 7-string guitar hasn't quite 'clicked' for them yet. In Book 1 we cover: -The major and natural minor scales. -The major and minor pentatonic scales. -The blues scale. -Diatonic 7th arpeggios. -Triads and triad arpeggios. -Diatonic chords.

Book excerpt: "Regular cabs will not travel to the Pittsburgh Hill District of the 1970s, and so the residents turn to each other. Jitney dramatizes the lives of men hustling to make a living as jitneys--unofficial, unlicensed taxi cab drivers. When the boss Becker's son returns from prison, violence threatens to erupt. What makes this play remarkable is not the plot; Jitney is Wilson at his most real--the words these men use and the stories they tell form a true slice of life."--The Wikipedia entry, accessed 5/22/2014.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed to be useful for guitarists at any skill level. Beginners can use it as an introduction to the foundational concepts of the instrument, intermediate players can use it for training and theoretical work, and advanced players can explore the sections on advanced theory, extended technique andthe exhaustive tables of melodic and rhythmic possibilities. It is divided into two parts: pitch and rhythm. Part 1 (pitch) begins with the properties of string, harmonics, and tuning systems. It then moves methodically through pitch information, beginning with locating all versions of a single pitch, building pentatonic, heptatonic, and all possible symmetrical scales. This is followed by a study of intervals, with all possible locations of every two pitches, and a long study that moves through every possible fingering of three pitches, with a series of exercises to master triadic syntax. Part 1 closes with a study of four-pitch structures and complete tables that show all possible pitch sets in circular visual notation.Part 2 (rhythm) begins with a complete course in "Symmetrical Picking," a methodbased on drum rudiments that builds control in the picking hand through an exhaustive variety of movements. The focus of this section is building a strong rhythmic foundation, with a focus on efficiency, accuracy, speed, dynamics, and groove. It is followed by a study of legato playing, working with ornaments and slides. The study of playing with fingers on multiple strings takes up the remainder of the book. This begins with the study of pulse against pulse, playing twosimultaneous tempos. The book concludes with a study of polyrhythm, playingone rhythm against another. Plain English is used as much as possible to describe theoretical concepts, and hundreds of illustrations were made for the book as an aid to those who either don't speak English or prefer to think visually. This approach is designed to beinclusive and to promote creative practice. The main idea of the book is described in this passage (page 154): "Even in this small area there is a lot of material, potentially a lifetime of study. The amount of information can feel overwhelming to students at any level. For this reason, the book is designed for self-directed practice, with an emphasis on what the player "could" do, rather than what the player "should" do. The principle is to develop your own learning process, rather than following someone else?s. The ability to make choices is essential in finding a personal approach to the instrument. Pick and choose the studies that seem interesting - there should be enough variety to accommodate a wide range of personalities. If any particular concept or exercise has been useful as the starting point for a new creative direction, then the book has done its job. Its purpose is not to push any dogma, method, or style, but to open the door to options for guitarists of any background that are looking for new perspectives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2006 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: A, Southern Illinois University Carbondale (Department of English), course: English Drama (August Wilson), language: English, abstract: The unreliable black musician Floyd Barton has great plans to go to Chicago and make more records, trying to get his reluctant girlfriend Vera to accompany him. However, he commits the mistake of robbing a loan office and burying the money in the yard, which is witnessed by his lunatic tubercular friend King Hedley, who eventually kills him with his machete to gain possession of the money, which in his belief was destined to him by the legendary “Buddy Bolden,” according to his late father’s legendary promise. This drama deals with kings, and a king to be born. It is a prophesy in this regard. The plot is rolled up backwards: first, the audience observes a circle of friends after the funeral feast for one group member, Floyd Barton; then, the setting is a couple of days before his publicly unresolved murder, and some components of the rising action are: a discussion of the men whether knives or revolvers are better for killing (48-49), a boxing fight of Joe Louis witnessed on the radio (57-58), young sensual and pregnant Ruby arriving quite unannounced to stay at her Aunt Louise’s house (61), Hedley killing an annoying rooster (69), Hedley receiving his machete (92-93), Ruby giving herself to old sick Hedley out of mercy (95), Poochie getting shot when robbing a loan office (101-102), Vera giving in to accompany Floyd to Chigaco (103), Floyd and his band members and friends coming back from the Blue Goose where they had an exceptionally well-received gig (106), and Floyd’s burying the money from his loan office robbery being discovered by Canewell (107-108). The climax is Floyd being threatened by Hedley with his machete to give him his money (109), but the audience is not absolutely certain that he gets killed. The falling action plays after the funeral again, and brings the solution to the murder case: Canewell is the only witness that Hedley is in the possession of Floyd’s money, which he allegedly received by the mysterious Buddy Bolden (112). The theme of this drama is a persiflage about how the American Dream of an aspiring young black musician (with only one hit record so far) is shattered, because the protagonist is corrupted, and eventually killed by an insane man in fulfillment of the oracle of the latter’s mythical African father.

Book excerpt: Secrets of master guitarists, revealed in conversation. Guitar Talk offers interviews with many of the most creative guitarists of our time. This new book presents these conversations, between Joel Harrison and Nels Cline, Pat Metheny, Fred Frith, Bill Frisell, Julian Lage, Elliott Sharp, Michael Gregory Jackson, Ben Monder, Anthony Pirog, Henry Kaiser, Mike and Leni Stern, Vernon Reid, Mary Halvorson, Nguyên Le, Rez Abbasi, Ava Mendoza, Liberty Ellman, Brandon Ross, Wayne Krantz, Dave Fiuczynski, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Miles Okazaki, Sheryl Bailey, Rafiq Bhatia, and Ralph Towner—twenty-seven great guitarists in all. An enormous range of approaches and sounds exist in the modern guitar. The instrument can howl, scrape, scratch, scream, sing, pluck, and soothe. What stands out in this book is not so much the instrument itself, rather the wonderful and idiosyncratic personalities of these bold souls, their sometimes wild, often zigzagging, and ultimately profound journeys toward beauty, meaning, and excellence in their work. We find out that jazz icon Bill Frisell won a high school band contest playing R&B tunes, beating out future members of Earth Wind and Fire. We learn which of Nels Cline's compositions he wishes to have played at his funeral. Michael Gregory Jackson recounts painful episodes of racism as he stretched between the chasm of avant jazz, rock, and blues in the 1980s. Many more revelations, amusements, and philosophies abound.
