Despite the country's natural beauty and resources, Lesotho faces a number of challenges, including high levels of poverty and HIV/AIDS, which is one of the highest rates in the world. The government has made significant efforts to address these issues, but there is still a long way to go in terms of improving the quality of life for the people of Lesotho. Overall, Lesotho is a country with a rich cultural heritage and natural beauty, but also faces a number of social and economic challenges that must be addressed in order for it to thrive.

Book Synopsis Narrating the Everyday: Windows on Life in Central South Africa by : Asta Rau
Download or read book Narrating the Everyday: Windows on Life in Central South Africa written by Asta Rau and published by UJ Press. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chapters in this book reflect on the practice of using narratives to understand individual and social reality. They all reveal dimensions of the same concrete reality: contemporary society of Central South Africa. Except for two, all the chapters originated from research in the program The Narrative Study of Lives, situated in the Department of Sociology at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein, South Africa. Each chapter opens a window on an aspect of everyday life in Central South Africa. Each window displays the capacity of the narrative as a methodological tool in qualitative research to open up better understandings of everyday experience. The chapters also reflect on the epistemological journey towards unwrapping and breaking open of meaning. Narratives are one of many tools available to sociologists in their quest to understand and interpret meaning. But, when it comes to deep understanding, narratives are particularly effective in opening up more intricate levels of meaning associated with emotions, feelings, and subjective experiences.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Research on Teaching in Multicultural and Multilingual Contexts by : Charamba, Erasmos
Download or read book Handbook of Research on Teaching in Multicultural and Multilingual Contexts written by Charamba, Erasmos and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2022-06-24 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several factors have resulted in increased intra- and inter-state migration. This has led to an increase in the enrollment of students with diverse linguistics backgrounds, placing more academic demands on educators. Linguistic diversity presents both opportunities and challenges for educators across the educational spectrum. Language ideologies profoundly shape and constrain the use of language as a resource for learning in multilingual or linguistically diverse classrooms. While English has become the world language, most communities remain, and are becoming more and more multicultural, multilingual, and diverse. The Handbook of Research on Teaching in Multicultural and Multilingual Contexts moves beyond the constraints of current language ideologies and enables the use of a wide range of resources from local semiotic repertoires. It examines the phenomenon of language use, language teaching, multiculturalism, and multilingualism in different learning areas, giving practitioners a voice to spotlight their efforts in order to keep their teaching afloat in culturally and linguistically diverse situations. Covering topics such as Indigenous languages, multilingual deaf communities, and intercultural competence, this major reference work is an essential resource for educators of both K-12 and higher education, pre-service teachers, educational psychologists, linguists, education administrators and policymakers, government officials, researchers, and academicians.
Download or read book Native Listening written by Anne Cutler and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2012-07-27 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An argument that the way we listen to speech is shaped by our experience with our native language. Understanding speech in our native tongue seems natural and effortless; listening to speech in a nonnative language is a different experience. In this book, Anne Cutler argues that listening to speech is a process of native listening because so much of it is exquisitely tailored to the requirements of the native language. Her cross-linguistic study (drawing on experimental work in languages that range from English and Dutch to Chinese and Japanese) documents what is universal and what is language specific in the way we listen to spoken language. Cutler describes the formidable range of mental tasks we carry out, all at once, with astonishing speed and accuracy, when we listen. These include evaluating probabilities arising from the structure of the native vocabulary, tracking information to locate the boundaries between words, paying attention to the way the words are pronounced, and assessing not only the sounds of speech but prosodic information that spans sequences of sounds. She describes infant speech perception, the consequences of language-specific specialization for listening to other languages, the flexibility and adaptability of listening (to our native languages), and how language-specificity and universality fit together in our language processing system. Drawing on her four decades of work as a psycholinguist, Cutler documents the recent growth in our knowledge about how spoken-word recognition works and the role of language structure in this process. Her book is a significant contribution to a vibrant and rapidly developing field.
Book Synopsis Gender and Language in Sub-Saharan Africa by : Lilian Lem Atanga
Download or read book Gender and Language in Sub-Saharan Africa written by Lilian Lem Atanga and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2013-03-27 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender and Language in Sub-Saharan Africa: Tradition, Struggle and Change is the first book to bring together the topics of language and gender, African languages, and gender in African contexts, and it does so in a descriptive, explanatory and critical way. Including fascinating new work and new, often challenging data from Botswana, Chad, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa, this collection looks at some ‘traditional’ uses of language in relation to the gender of its speakers and the gendered nature of the languages themselves; it also identifies and explores social change in terms of both gender and sexuality, as reflected in and constructed by language and discourse. The contributions to this volume are accessibly written and will be of interest to students and established academics working on African sociolinguistics and discourse, as well as those whose interest is language, gender and sexuality.
Book Synopsis Language Acquisition, Processing and Bilingualism by : Anna Cardinaletti
Download or read book Language Acquisition, Processing and Bilingualism written by Anna Cardinaletti and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-07-16 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together selected papers from the conference “The Romance Turn VII” held in Venice in October 2015, this volume focuses on a broad range of topics at the heart of the current debate on language acquisition, including clitic pronouns, left-dislocations, passives, relative clauses, and wh-questions. It explores these topics within a range of different acquisition settings, such as L1 and L2 acquisition, bilingualism, typical and atypical development. In addition to syntax, the volume covers other modules of grammar, namely, semantics, pragmatics, and phonology, and adds a perspective on language processing to current discussions on the acquisition of Romance languages. This book also includes contributions on atypical language acquisition in cases of deafness and on language intervention based on formal linguistics. It will appeal not only to scholars and students interested in the nature and processes behind first, second and bilingual language acquisition, and impaired language acquisition, but also to language educators and clinicians.
