Where he cautions the Corinthians against joining with idolaters in their religious festivals, be cause they could not do it without holding communion with those de mons in honour of whom they were celebrated His argument is to this purpose: That as in the Lord's supper we hold a communion with Christ, and as the Jews in their sacred feasts communicated with God at his altar, so' in these idolatrous feasts they held a religious comme nion with the idol.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plain Sermons, Vol. 2 of 2 "While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal." There is a truth which we all know equally well, - whether we are learned or ignorant, old or young; we are all equally well assured of the truth, - that the things which we see are temporal, - only for a time, and fast passing away. And yet, though we know it so well, our heavenly Father seems, if I may so speak, to take great pains to remind us of it constantly; as if it were of very great consequence that we should be continually thinking of it, and as if we were very likely, practically, to forget it. For in every thing about us, and in ourselves, and in Scripture, the Almighty seems to be continually forcing this truth upon our minds. In every thing about us, - for what are day and night so quickly following each other, but little images of life and of death, and of resurrection after death? "There is neither speech nor language, but their voices are heard among them; one day telleth another, and one night certifieth another." And what are Spring and Autumn, Summer and Winter so quietly indeed and steadily, but so rapidly, succeeding each other? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons on Various Occasions, and Most of Them on the Principal Subjects of Genuine Christianity, Vol. 2 Spirit, so he maintains it by causing his Spirit to con tinne with us. For as the beginning, so the continuance, of sanctification depends necessarily upon his inspiration. For as the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abide in the vine, and the sap of the vine abide in it; no more can we, except we abide in Christ, and the Spirit of Christ abide in us. 'if any man do not observe this, and abide not in him, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered. Hence Christ exhorts us, Abide in me, and I in you; and, for our encourage ment, adds, He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit; and every branch in me that beareth fruit, my Father purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. The sum of the matter is this: all our wisdom in spiritual things, holiness and happiness, arise from the presence of the Spirit in us. While he continues to enlighten, sanctify, and com fort us, so long we know, obey, and are happy. But if he forsake us, (which it is not his will to do, ) all our good vanishes, and we are left the same ignorant, unholy, miserable creatures we were before. But having attended more to this point, in preparing the present Volume for the press, the Editor hopes he has now succeeded still better, and that the pecu liar cast of instruction which distinguished the Pulpit Compositions of Mr. Milner, is so well pre served ln these Sermons, as to give them an increased interest with his surviving friends and hearers. But the other object which he has had in view is of far more importance; and this was to select such Sermons for publication, as in the opinion of the Author himself, were he now alive, would be best adapted to the spiritual condition, and the exist ing circumstances of his audience. Now the Editor certainly knows, that during the latter years of Mr. Milner's life, his mind was deeply affected on account of the religious declensions and divisions which he saw taking place in the town of Hull. He thought he perceived a proud, worldly spirit, and the excessive love -of gain, eating out the love of Christ, of his cause and people, in many who had once seemed to walk humbly with their God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons on Several Occasions, Vol. 3 But although this direction relates only to our Christian brethren, (such, at least, by outward profession, ) that in the text is of a far wider extent; it unquestionably relates to all mankind. It clearly requires us, to keep at a distance, as far as is practicable, from all ungodly men. Indeed it seems, the word which we render unclean thing, 73 usotptov, might rather be rendered unclean person; probably alluding to the ceremonial law, which'forbade touching one that was legally unclean. But even here, were we to understand the expres sion literally, were we to take the words in the strictest sense, the same absurdity would follow we must needs, as the Apostle speaks, 1 go out of the world. We should not be able to abide in those callings, Which the Providence of God has assigned us. Were we not to converse at all with men of those characters, it would be im possible to transact our temporal business. So that every conscien tious Christian would have nothing to do but to flee into the desert. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons for the Christian Year, Vol. 1 It was thought well to give so brilliant a student the benefit of a course at Rome, and so after his re turn from his holiday, he was sent by Bishop Grant to the venerable English College there to complete his ecclesiastical studies. Here he gained a reputa tion for high ability, and in due time took his Doc tor's degree. He was ordained deacon by Cardinal Patrizi, at St. John Lateran, in 1863, and priest on Holy Saturday, 1864. He said his first Mass in the Chapel of the English College on Easter Sunday. In September, 1863, during the summer vacation, he had made another long walking tour in the form of a pilgrimage to Loreto. He then Visited Assisi, Perugia, Bologna and even Milan, returning by Florence and Orvieto. On this occasion, too, he visited famous monastic sanctuaries of Vallombrosa and Camaldoli. In 1864 he received the Doctor's cap and ring from Father Perrone S. J., and in September left Rome for England. On this journey, he first went South, visiting Naples and Benevento, and making a pil grimage to the tomb of St. Benedict at Monte Cassino. He retraced his steps along the Adriatic Gulf to Ravenna, and thence by F errara, Padua and Venice, through the Austrian Tyrol to Munich, and so back to London. He was now placed on the Professorial staff of St. Edmund's College, where he remained four years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in our edition. We do, however, repair the vast majority of imperfections successfully; any imperfections that remain are intentionally left to preserve the state of such historical works.
