Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons and Songs of the Christian Life The Sermons were written, not for the press, but the pulpit, and are given mainly as they were dcliv ered. I should revise them a good deal more if I sought to reduce them to the standard of classical taste, but I believe in that way they would lose in point and directness; and so I dismiss them as they are, hoping they will find a response in the hearts of some readers worthy of the themes which they set forth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Normal Christian Life is a book by Watchman Nee first delivered as a series of addresses to Christian workers who were gathered in Denmark for special meetings in 1938 and 1939. The messages were first published chapter by chapter in the magazine A Witness and A Testimony published by Theodore Austin-Sparks. The first chapter was published in the November-December 1940 issue. This first publication of the book can be viewed in the original magazines on Austin-Sparks.Net. The messages were later compiled into a book by Angus Kinnear in 1957 in Bombay, India. In The Normal Christian Life, Watchman Nee presents foundational principles for the Christian life and walk drawing primarily from the book of Romans. The book is generally regarded by many as the first introduction of Watchman Nee to the Western world. As of 2009, this book has sold over 1 million copies and is available in many editions and languages. Watchman Nee based his speaking on the first eight chapters of the New Testament book of Romans. Nee takes the first eight chapters of Romans as a "self-contained unit" and divides these chapters into two parts: Romans 1:1 to 5:11 as part one and Romans 5:12 to 8:39 as part two. In the first part of Romans "sins" is given prominent attention and deals with the question of the sins man has committed before God. However, the second section deals with "sin," that is the inward nature, or inward working principle, within man that causes man to commit sin. Thus there is a difference between the acts of a sinner, sins, and the inward nature of a sinner, sin. Nee reveals that God's dual remedy is the Blood of the Lord Jesus Christ and the Cross of Christ. The Blood "deals with what we have done, whereas the Cross deals with what we are. The Blood disposes of our sins, while the Cross strikes at the root of our capacity for sin". As Nee progressively moves along in his book, he first touches upon the Blood and then focuses upon the Cross for the remainder of the book. Watchman Nee gave four steps in which a Christian lives the Christian life. Basing from Romans 6:6, there is the need for the knowledge of the cross of Christ as a fact in our experience. The second step is the matter of reckoning. Reckoning is the stating and considering of facts and promises that God has revealed to be true. The third step is the matter of presenting to God. Coming to Romans 6:13, Watchman Nee says that Christians consecrate that which passed through death and resurrection in the new creation. In this way, Christians would no longer live to themselves but to Christ because He has the full authority over their lives. The fourth step is the matter of Walking after the Spirit. Firstly, walking after the Spirit does not refer to our "working" but of dependence on God's working and operation. Secondly, it refers to subjection. This means that the Christian life is the yielding of all the dictates of our flesh and be of subjection to the Spirit. The Normal Christian Life is one of Nee's most well known books. It is considered by many to be a spiritual classic of Christianity. It has been reprinted and reissued in many editions and in many languages. The book's enduring appeal is not only due to Nee's exposition of Romans but also to the many illustrations, personal accounts, and anecdotes that Nee used. The Normal Christian Life has impacted millions of Christians since Nee spoke it and is a major contributor to the local churches movement today. Nee was recognized in the United States House of Representatives by Christopher H. Smith of New Jersey in 2009. He recognized Nee as having been one of the most influential Chinese Christians of his era. In the Congressional record, The Normal Christian Life is highlighted by Smith as being among his most popular and influential books. (wikipedia.org)

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christ Our Life: Sermons The wisdom mentioned in our text does not relate to the extent of our knowledge, but to its kind. It is not an expansion of learning already gained, but attention to the sphere of life and conduct which is demanded. It is that wisdom of which the fear of the Lord is the beginning. It has its seat in the heart. This is the repeated declaration of the Word of God. Not only is it distinctly stated in the book from which our text is taken, but we find it in the Book of Psalms. And in Job we read, Behold the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom. To Solomon, indeed, there was one living illustration of the truth Of his teaching to which he could recur, the mem ory of a father Whose heart was perfect toward the Lord his God; but the life of David is open to us, as it was to him, and we have further means of apprehending this truth in the history of men who. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lord's Song: And Other Sermons Man is apt to make one mistake respecting the Lord's song in both its aspects, the mistake suggested in the text. He is apt to think that only in special places, at special times, and in cer tain special ways can it be heard or sung. He is apt to think that it can be heard or sung only at the times and in the places set apart to what is called religion, only on Sunday and in church or temple. Dreary and perilous mistake! He who cannot hear or sing that song elsewhere is not likely to hear or sing it in church or temple. And this, perhaps, is why the church and temple now mourn the scantiness of their worshipers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes of the Christian Life: A Selection of Sermons Preached Let me now endeavour to illustrate some grand common features Of the life of God in the soul, and contrast them with a kind of life which is the sad and melancholy Opposite and alternative of living to and being alive unto God, and which St. Paul calls living in Sin. There are general features of the divine life fundamental to all forms Of it; there are bold terrible signs of the absence Of that life, which are conspicuous warnings against undue com prehensiveness. While we are eager to comfort those who are living to God and do not know it, we are anxious at the outset to be free from the charge of calling evil good, or sympathizing with the pan theistic supposition that all life is the life Of God. Two considerations are suggested by my texts, which will form a general introduction to the ques tion which. I propose to discuss. I. The, contrasted lives Life in Sin, and being alive unto God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Message of Peace, and Other Christians Sermons The Song of the Angels was the first public preaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Its advent had been announced privately to those who were elected to be its instrument, in dream and vision, in angelic salutation, in inspirations of the Holy Ghost. To Zacharias in the Temple, to Mary in the secret chamber, in the night watches to Joseph, in the joy of her unborn child to Elisabeth, the assurance of its approach had been given. It had been recognized and welcomed in words such as had never yet burst from the hearts of men, from human gladness, from human hope My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs for the New Life: Designed for Public, Social and Private Christian Uses This volume is the fruit of a long-cherished desire to help the masses in the use, and real enjoyment and blessing of Sacred Song, not only in the Lord's house, but in their homes, and on all Christian occasions. Hence the tunes on these pages have been selected mainly for their singing qualities, and for their adaptation to the themes of song herein contained. It is believed that they are such as will render the song service in the great congregation at once inviting and effective, while those which have more special adaptation to home and social singing, will greatly enhance the pleasure and profit of song in these departments. Extremes have been avoided. Even the new tunes will be readily learned, and, we think, generally liked for their melodious character. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Song: A Sermon, Delivered in Bowdoin-Street Church, Boston The song itself is a hymn of praise to the divine Redeemer. The inspired writer informs us that when no created being in the universe was found worthy to unseal and explain the book which was held in the right hand of Him who sits on the throne of heaven, and which contained his eternal counsels and purposes respecting his church, then he beheld, and 10, in the midst of the throne, and of the four beasts, (or living beings, ) and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb, as it had been slain, having seven horns, and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God, sent forth into all the earth: and he came and took the book out of the right hand of him that sat upon the throne. It was on this great occasion that the four living be ings, and the four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odors, which are the prayers of saints. Immediately it is added, And they sung a new song, saying, thou art worthy to take the book, and to Open the seals thereof for thou wast slain, and hast re deemed us to God by thy blood, out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; and hast made us unto our God kings and priests and we shall reign on the earth It appears, then, that the new song which resounds through the regions Of bliss, is a song of praise to the lord jesus christ. His name calls forth from the myriads of the redeemed, their sweetest. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
