But if they lack, in consequence, finished literary style, perhaps the spontaneous expression of his personality reveals itself all the more clearly. Since, too, the sermons are in the main devotional, not dogmatic, many a word or phrase may seem theologically less well chosen, though the substantial scheme of his theology can be watched, in them, growing ever more firm and more compact. Thus, despite their incompleteness - much more material was destroyed or has been set aside - they have a true value as a psychological document. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons and Sermon Notes I propose to speak here of those gifts which enabled Father Maturin to win so many hearts and souls to a good and useful life, and often to a high Spirituality. Father Maturin was a man in whom missionary zeal, the fire of Spiritual genius and penetrating psycho logical insight were combined to a rare degree. Both in the pulpit and from the chair of the preacher of spiritual retreats, first as a Cowley Father and then for eighteen years as a Catholic Priest, these gifts were exercised with a power which deeply affected many lives. I personally never heard any preacher of whom the word inspiration could be more justly used. It was with him in the pulpit much what it is with many a great poet, whose conversation little prepares one for the immense sweep of imagination and passion or the power of vivid expression which are apparent when he takes his pen in hand. With the poet brooding thought in solitude as a rule kindles the fire and his pen is the instrument for kindling others. With Father Maturin the presence of human beings whom he addressed kindled the fire in himself and the spoken word waslhis instrument. Reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. The life of the holy is the life of God; and therefore it is one life, wherever and in whomsoever it is manifested. Every spirit of living man is begotten of the great Father of Spirits; yet so wide are the apparent differences in the manifestation and clothing of such spirits, that many presumptuously say, 'This, and this, cannot be offspring of the Father.' Such presumptions are the work of shallow philosophy and partial knowledge of both man and God. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermon Notes of John Henry Cardinal Newman, 1849-1878 Cardinal newman in his Church of England days always read his sermons. He discontinued this practice, except on very special occasions, after his conversion. At both periods he was following what happened to be the more general custom in the Communion to which he belonged. It is not likely that his preaching suffered much by the change. If it had, he would have gone back to his old practice. He would have preferred, it is true, to do what most other priests did, for he hated singularity in any shape, but this was not a sufficient reason for running the risk of even partial failure before mixed congregations in a town where he was a stranger, and at a time when from various causes the no-popery feeling was particularly strong. Neither does the change, though he was past middle life when he made it, seem to have been a difficulty to him. Apparently he soon discovered that the thoughts that he had in his mind when he entered the pulpit developed themselves and took new shapes while he was speak ing for the Notes which are now being published were for the most part written out not before, but after, the sermon. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twelve Cambridge Sermons IT was Professor Mayor's usual practice, after preaching in his College Chapel or the 'university Church, to print the sermon, with abundant annotations, and distribute copies among his friends: Twelve of these sermons are here reprinted, just as he issued theml, with all the notes and all the quotations. Neither could be spared. If the notes are an embellishment, the quotations are of the very tissue of the work. Mayor delivered the utterance of other men with much more emphasis and expression than he could bring himself to put into his own, and even when he used the same passage a second time, there was always something in the setting that gave it distinction. The business of the editor has merely been to select and see through the Press such discourses as exhibit in clearest light the preacher's mind at different stages in his long ministry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel and the Age: Sermons on Special Occasions The sermons contained in this volume were preached, as their title states, on special occasions. They were selected for publication not as possessing, for that reason, any special merit, but because they were the only ones the publication of which was possible for their author. The preacher of what are called extempore sermons - that is to say, sermons not read from manuscript, but delivered from brief notes - cannot reproduce them in print unless they happen to have been taken down at the time by a reporter. Such reports can hardly ever be verbatim, and are for the most part more or less imperfect and inaccurate. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this important book, Webb makes two central claims. First, that effective preaching without a manuscript is not a matter of talent as much as it is a matter of preparation. Preachers can learn the practices and disciplines that make it possible to deliver articulate, thoughtfully crafted sermons, not from a written page, but as a natural, spontaneous act of oral communication. Throughout the book, the author offers specific examples including a transcript of a sermon preached without manuscript or notes. Second, that the payoff of learning to preach without a manuscript is nothing less than sermons that more effectively and engagingly give witness to the good news.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermon Plans: Being Four Outlines of Sermons, Chiefly on the Epistles and Gospels for Each Sunday and Holiday of the Year In order that the eye may assist the mind, each sermon is so printed in its various types, etc. On two pages facing each other, ' that its plan and contents may be seen entire at a glance, without the interrup tion caused by turning over a leaf. Some deprecate the practice of announcing the divisions of a sermon to the people. Yet, if the chief points, two or three at most, are made known at the beginning, will this not aid the hearers in following more easily? And will not such a practice help to keep the speaker to the point, and to avoid his wandering into generalities? It is the old-fashioned custom, and must enable the audience to follow more methodically, and then, to remember more easily what has been said.
