Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons on Some Words of Christ With one exception, all the Sermons in this volume were preached in St. Paul's Cathedral, and nearly all were preached during Dr. Liddon's autumnal period of residence. They represent, therefore, a part of the teaching which, when no great festivals, no special season of the Christian year, controlled his choice of subjects, he prepared for a congregation whose wants and capacity he seemed to know with peculiar insight. And they illustrate, in their concentration of thought upon the Words of Christ, that characteristic of Tractarian theology which has been marked by Dean Church: "The great Name stood no longer for an abstract symbol of doctrine, but for a living Master, Who could teach as well as save. And not forgetting whither He had gone and what He was, the readers of Scripture now sought Him eagerly in those sacred records, where we can almost see and hear His going in and out among men." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quit Your Meanness: Sermons and Sayings of Rev. Sam P. Jones of Georgia, With an Introduction by W. M. Leftwich, D. D The charge that God brought against his ancient people was this: My people will not consider. The etymological definition of that word is to look at a thing until you see it. If we look at a landscape a glance will take in the main features, such as the mountain scenery, the stream, and the hamlet. A consideration or careful examination will show the foliage of the mountain trees, the road leading to the mansion, the cattle grazing on the hill slopes, and so on. There is a great difference between glancing at an object and considering it. St. Paul had considered the state of affairs in Athens, and his spirit was stirred within him when he saw how the whole city was given to idolatry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theology and Life: Sermons Chiefly on Special Occasions Of the work which the servants of God have been called to do in the great cities of the world. To Jonah, the son of Amittai, the word of the Lord came, saying, Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it for their wickedness is come up before me.'2 He shrank, as he might well do (sinful as the shrinking was), from en countering that wickedness, from facing in its living horrors all that dread ferocity and brutal lust which seem even now to glare upon us from the sculptured stone. He shrank from uttering the threat. Yet more did he shrink from the thought that the God of his fathers had any care for such. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fresh Views of Old Truths: Church Sermons T is undeniable that there is often a wearisome sameness about Sermons which has afforded sad occasion for the contempt only too readily expressed for them by an irreligious world. The Author hopes and believes that he has at the least avoided this fault. The repelling element of constantly recurring religious common-places, and the stock phrases which are meant to cover, but never really conceal from the intelligent, poverty or confusion of thought, will not be found in these Sermons. Very early in the days of the world they became a just cause of complaint. Even by the godly Job they were found intolerable: and he signified his impatience of them in the plainest language. How forcible (says be) are right words. But what doth your arguing reprove I have heard many such things: miserable comforters are ye all! Shall vain words have an end? I also could speak as ye do: if your soul were in my soul's stead, I could heap up words against you, and shake mine head at you. But I would strengthen you with my mouth. The conventional terms too, so appropriate to systematic theology, are but very sparingly introduced; the Author considering them out of place in Parochial Sermons, as inconsistent with the simplicity of the Gospel, and irrelevant to the plain teachings that the Preacher should be setting himself to gather in a practical form from the passage before him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons on Important Subjects But Christ says, Enter ye in at the strait gate for wide is the gate, and broad is the way that leadeth to destruction, and many there be who go in thereat. Again, when one said unto him, Lord, are there few, that be saved He said unto them, strive to enter in at the strait gate for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able. When once the master of the house is risen up and bath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without and to kndck at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us and he shall answer and say unto you, I know youvnot whence ye are: Then shall ye begin to say, we have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets. But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are depart from me all ye work ers of iniquity. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out. From these declarations of the Lord Je sus Christ, it is evident that many will be ex cluded from the kingdom of glory. And they, who are excluded, cannot be admitted at any future time. For Christ says to such an one, as shall be cast into hell, Verily, I say unto thee, thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing. And again he says, If thy hand ofi'end thee. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The printed words of this me morial volume may seem to some quite ordinary, but those who heard him speak them will remem ber how great audiences were swayed by them and bore evidence to his power by smiles and tears and altered lives. We regret that we are not able to publish some of his most effective sermons - such, for instance, as his great sermon on the Office and Work of the Holy Spirit - but these sermons were the result of years of study, and were so much a part of him self that he used no manuscript, and he has left no adequate notes. All that are true Christians are, in a measure, like the Christ whose name they bear, and it is to his image that we are finally to be conformed. When he Shall appear we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is; and meanwhile, in proportion as we see him now, we are changed into the same image, from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. The Samson type may well serve as the symbol of every Christian in the world. The believer has been helped by divine grace in his spiritual con icts, and he has known the victory which overcometh the world, even our faith. He has thus been made more than a conqueror through him that loved us, and now he stands in the midst of his fellow-men inviting them to Jesus. With the honey in his hands, which he continues still to feast upon, he displays the heavenly sweetness to all that are round about him, saying, 0 taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from College Sermons The supremacy OF the unseenwhen in the secret place of our soul we build our God, we form Him not out of cosmic forces, not out of gravitation and chemical attraction, but out of holiness and love. And, 10! As we look, the form is as of the Son of Man! The Absolute as Absolute is not enough for the religious life. Man must have some fixed, visible point, some crystalliza tion, as it were, of the All on which his love and reverence may rest. That is where the New Testament story meets him. Here he finds the humanizing and personalizing of the Infinite Goodness. In the study of this Life he tastes eter nity. And as he believes, the power to be good ows into him. Therefore knows he to-day the Christ, not only as human, but also as Divine; not only as a figure in history, but as the eternal Now. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twelve Cambridge Sermons IT was Professor Mayor's usual practice, after preaching in his College Chapel or the 'university Church, to print the sermon, with abundant annotations, and distribute copies among his friends: Twelve of these sermons are here reprinted, just as he issued theml, with all the notes and all the quotations. Neither could be spared. If the notes are an embellishment, the quotations are of the very tissue of the work. Mayor delivered the utterance of other men with much more emphasis and expression than he could bring himself to put into his own, and even when he used the same passage a second time, there was always something in the setting that gave it distinction. The business of the editor has merely been to select and see through the Press such discourses as exhibit in clearest light the preacher's mind at different stages in his long ministry.
