Download or read book Sermones parroquiales / 1 written by John Henry Newman and published by Encuentro. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis The Lawyer of the Church by : Pablo Mijangos y Gonzalez
Download or read book The Lawyer of the Church written by Pablo Mijangos y Gonzalez and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mexico’s Reforma, the mid-nineteenth-century liberal revolution, decisively shaped the country by disestablishing the Catholic Church, secularizing public affairs, and laying the foundations of a truly national economy and culture. The Lawyer of the Church is an examination of the Mexican clergy’s response to the Reforma through a study of the life and works of Bishop Clemente de Jesús Munguía (1810–68), one of the most influential yet least-known figures of the period. By analyzing how Munguía responded to changing political and intellectual scenarios in defense of the clergy’s legal prerogatives and social role, Pablo Mijangos y González argues that the Catholic Church opposed the liberal revolution not because of its supposed attachment to a bygone past but rather because of its efforts to supersede colonial tradition and refashion itself within a liberal yet confessional state. With an eye on the international influences and dimensions of the Mexican church-state conflict, The Lawyer of the Church also explores how Mexican bishops gradually tightened their relationship with the Holy See and simultaneously managed to incorporate the papacy into their local affairs, thus paving the way for the eventual “Romanization” of Mexican Catholicism during the later decades of the century.
Book Synopsis La España que sobrevive by : Fernando Díaz-Plaja
Download or read book La España que sobrevive written by Fernando Díaz-Plaja and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 1996-12-01 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students of Spanish language and culture can now benefit from a text that provides them with an understanding of contemporary Spanish history and society while refining their knowledge of the language and expanding their vocabulary. La España que sobrevive (originally published in Madrid in 1987) explores the aftermath of the Franco era in Spain. It presents an objective and nonpartisan, yet humorous and affectionate, view of the important aspects of contemporary Spanish history and society. Topics include the transition to democracy; regionalism and nationalism; key players in current affairs; important institutions such as the monarchy, military, and the church; sexual mores; culture; the media; and politicized approaches to Spanish history. For this edition, William W. Cressey has edited Fernando Díaz-Plaja's text to make it accessible to English-speaking students at an advanced level of Spanish reading skills. Cressey has also added study aids to the book—vocabulary and footnotes, glosses on proper names, questions for discussion, notes on grammar and rhetoric, and exercises. The study aids are gradually phased out, so that the final chapter is presented as stand-alone reading without any supplementary materials. Cressey's adaptation of Díaz-Plaja's highly respected work provides an alternative to literary sources for foreign language instruction—a new resource for teaching foreign languages across the curriculum and instruction through content. Bridging the gap between the fairly simple intermediate readers and texts written for adult native speakers, this book can serve as either a supplementary or main text in the advanced study of language or history, or in preparation for study abroad. La España que sobrevive is a practical tool for teaching not only the language but also the many facets of modern Spanish culture.

Book Synopsis Sermones parroquiales / 2 by : John Henry Newman
Download or read book Sermones parroquiales / 2 written by John Henry Newman and published by Encuentro. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
